Indus waters case: FO welcomes The Hague court decision
The ruling urges India to resume the operation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which New Delhi has held in abeyance since May.
In April, India suspended the treaty following an attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian-occupied Kashmir, which killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, though Islamabad denied involvement.
Pakistan condemned India's suspension of the treaty as an 'act of war,' highlighting that the IWT contains no provisions allowing unilateral suspension. Islamabad has also threatened legal action, citing violations of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
The PCA's supplemental award, announced on 27 June 2025, reaffirmed the court's jurisdiction over the dispute involving Pakistan and India's hydroelectric projects at Kishenganga and Ratle. The court declared its ongoing responsibility to ensure a timely and fair resolution of the matter.
The Foreign Office described the award as a vindication of Pakistan's position that the treaty remains valid and operational, and criticised India's unilateral decision to suspend it.
A statement issued by the Government of Pakistan called on India to 'immediately resume the normal functioning of the Indus Waters Treaty and fulfil its treaty obligations.'
It also welcomed the PCA's ruling on competence, which rejected India's suspension of the treaty, expressing optimism for the forthcoming award on the merits following hearings held in July 2024.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan's readiness to engage in meaningful dialogue with India on outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir, water, trade, and terrorism.
According to the PCA, the treaty does not allow either party to unilaterally suspend or hold it in abeyance. The court stated such actions would undermine the treaty's dispute resolution mechanisms.
The court further noted that India's position was not justifiable under international law.

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has launched an AI curriculum across federal schools, begun training 10,000 AI instructors, and initiated fibre optic internet connectivity for 532 schools in Islamabad — all as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's 'Digital Nation Pakistan' vision. 'Our focus has shifted from just training numbers to actual employability and impact.' She highlighted that a high-level committee, formed under the prime minister's directive, is reviewing national IT curricula with an emphasis on employability of school and college graduates. The revised curriculum, being jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, HEC, and National Curriculum Council, targets students from Grade 6 to 12. Further key developments include: Smart labs, classrooms, and digital screens have already been installed in over 100 federal schools and colleges. A hybrid/EdTech model is being rolled out to ensure modern education reaches remote areas. The National AI Policy is actively working to prepare 10,000 AI trainers for nationwide deployment. Google and Microsoft certifications will be offered to students to improve their international job prospects. In a major international collaboration, Pakistan signed a deal with Huawei during the PM's recent visit to China, aiming to train 300,000 students in AI and digital skills. Over 200 students have already completed their training under this agreement, with the rest expected by year-end. Minister Khawaja concluded that the real goal now is to create a digitally skilled, employable workforce, not just run training programmes. Military and diplomatic: ‘India under intense mental stress after facing repeated failures'
KARACHI: The Chairman of National Business Group Pakistan, the President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, the President of All Karachi Industrial Alliance, the Chairman of the FPCCI Advisory Board, Mian Zahid Hussain, said that Indian PM Narendra Modi and his team is under intense mental stress after facing repeated military and diplomatic failures. He stated that the collapse of India's false narrative, it's deteriorating internal political situation, serious human rights violations, and atrocities against minorities, including the Kashmiri Muslims and Dalits, have drawn open criticism from several European nations and international human rights organizations, further damaging India's global standing. He said that the Modi government, in an attempt to garner cheap popularity and divert global attention from internal crises such as the farmers' movement and rising inflation, is preparing for another attack on Pakistan. A new false flag operation could be staged to justify this aggression. According to a recent UN report, more than 3,600 political arrests were made in India in 2024, highlighting the severity of its internal conditions. Mian Zahid Hussain warned that if India launches another attack on Pakistan, the response will be so severe that the world will forget the Israel-Iran and Russia-Ukraine conflicts. He said that attempts to increase ratings without capability will cost both Modi and India dearly. He emphasized that the morale and training of Pakistan's armed forces are not only high but, according to the 2023 Global Firepower Report, Pakistan's military ranks as the ninth-largest and one of the most organized in the world. Mian Zahid Hussain added that the recent speech by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has made it clear that Pakistan is at a decisive stage in its war against terrorism, and India aims to sabotage this progress. In recent years, India has attempted two military incursions, both of which were repelled entirely by Pakistan, which proved Pakistan's military capability and caused significant international embarrassment for India. He further stated that global powers must not remain silent. If India turns South Asia into a battlefield, the consequences will be felt worldwide, affecting not only humanitarian but also economic and geopolitical aspects. South Asia houses 25 percent of the world's population, and a conflict between two nuclear powers in this region would pose an unimaginable threat to global peace. He demanded that the Kashmir dispute be resolved immediately, and violations of the Indus Waters Treaty must be stopped, as lasting peace can only be achieved through a just political solution. PM reaffirms solidarity with Iran
ISLAMABAD: Amid escalating regional tensions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering solidarity with Iran and conveyed his well-wishes to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Dr Massoud Pezeshkian.
