Marrakech – Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch stated Friday that Morocco's co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal represents far more than a global sporting event – it serves as a 'strategic transformation accelerator' for the North African country. Speaking via video address at the 8th Morocco Today Forum (MTF) in Rabat, the country's executive leader outlined the tournament's transformative potential. 'It's an opportunity to realize, at all levels, the Royal Will to consolidate the foundations of a dynamic, inclusive and sovereign Morocco,' he said. The forum, held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, centered on the theme 'Vision of a King – Morocco 2030: Consolidating the Foundations of a Great Nation.' Akhannouch mentioned numerous projects either completed or underway throughout the country. These include internationally-compliant infrastructure, high-speed rail networks, major airport hubs, highways, urban ring roads, and tourism and hospital infrastructure. He added that Morocco's partners, including global leaders in their respective sectors and national businesses, are engaging with opportunities created by the country's openness to cutting-edge industries, clean energy, telecommunications, digitalization and other promising sectors. 'In many sectors, Morocco is moving toward becoming a continental, regional, and even international reference,' he continued. 'The organization of the 2030 World Cup will come to consolidate and accelerate this metamorphosis of Morocco under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI,' Akhannouch asserted. The prime minister noted that sporting infrastructure is experiencing considerable development to meet top international standards. These facilities are designed not only to host major international sporting events but also to drive growth and social cohesion across multiple cities. He pointed out that the hotel sector is undergoing profound overhaul, supported by unprecedented growth in demand for Morocco as a destination, with a record 17.4 million tourists in 2024. 'It's about embodying tomorrow's Morocco' In his contribution to the forum, Youssef Amrani, Morocco's Ambassador to the United States, framed the 2030 World Cup as more than a privilege – it's 'a moral contract with oneself and with the world.' 'It's not about building a few stadiums or developing infrastructure. It's about embodying tomorrow's Morocco,' Amrani said. 'A horizon cannot be decreed. It must be prepared for, anticipated, and earned.' The MTF 2025 is structured around three key panels: placing human capital at the heart of development, accelerating sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and building a resilient 'Digital Nation.' Mohammed Haitami, president of Le Matin Group which organizes the forum, clarified that this prestigious global sporting event is not merely about hosting twenty football matches but driving a national leap forward. 'It's a unique opportunity to mobilize the country around a structuring project, to modernize our infrastructure, to converge our efforts toward the same goal,' Haitami explained. The planned investment approaches MAD 500 billion ($50 billion). The event is gathering national and international decision-makers, researchers, and key figures from the sports, economic, digital, and media sectors. Based on projections from FIFA and macroeconomic analyses cited by Ambassador Amrani, the World Cup could generate a direct and indirect impact equivalent to 4% of Morocco's GDP through investment, employment, tourism, and global image enhancement. Driven by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has developed 'genuine expertise' in key sectors, starting with aerospace and automotive industries, and more recently, renewable energy, said Ross McInnes, Chairman of the Board of the Safran Group. In an interview with MAP-Paris on the occasion of the Throne Day celebrations, McInnes praised the progress achieved by the Kingdom and the development momentum sustained by 'a clear and ambitious strategy' led by the Sovereign. According to McInnes, what particularly sets Morocco apart from other countries is 'the quality of its workforce,' supported by 'strong initiatives,' notably the Industrial Acceleration Plan and vocational training programs. He also highlighted more than a quarter-century of 'an ambitious and exceptional partnership' with Morocco, which has strengthened its position in Africa by pursuing win-win partnerships and a robust economic diversification, thanks to 'a Vision that has enabled the Kingdom to become a strategic partner for international companies, while ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth.' 'Today, we have more than 5,000 employees in Morocco across more than eight sites, and we hope to continue in this direction, as the Kingdom is one of our two or three most important countries outside of France,' he said. McInnes noted that Safran is currently building a new maintenance and repair facility for its new-generation LEAP aircraft engines. Other projects are also in the pipeline, he said, pointing to Morocco's renewable energy supply 'available in sufficient quantities and at competitive prices' as a key factor, especially since the country has everything needed to succeed in this sector, including wind and solar power. McInnes also spoke about strengthening Safran's partnership with Morocco's flag carrier, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) in aircraft engine maintenance, stressing that 'RAM's hub positioning, the attractiveness and quality of the available workforce, are also why we are building another maintenance and repair center in Casablanca.' As co-chair of the France-Morocco Business Leaders Club (MEDEF International-CGEM), McInnes said he will lead a delegation of French business leaders on a visit to Dakhla on October 8-9 as part of a mission to explore business opportunities in Morocco's southern provinces. 'We approach this as 'Make with Morocco.' We are not in an economy purely focused on exports, but in one rooted in local establishment and integration,' he said, adding that French companies 'export extensively from Morocco.' He explained that the goal of French companies in general, and Safran in particular, is to 'develop, as much as Moroccan capabilities allow, a local supplier base, which will reinforce this integration and contribute to creating high-quality jobs for Moroccan employees working in French companies.' McInnes also emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the strengths of Franco-Moroccan cooperation, primarily in aerospace, green energy (hydrogen, solar, and wind), digital infrastructure, including data centers for AI, and the 'sustainable and lasting' infrastructure being developed in the Kingdom in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. Upper House Speaker Receives PLO Delegation
Speaker of Morocco's House of Councillors, Mohammed Ould Errachid, received, on Thursday in Rabat, a high-level delegation from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), led by Ahmad Al-Tamimi, member of the Organization's Executive Committee and head of its Department of Human Rights and Civil Society. On this occasion, Ould Errachid reiterated Morocco's constant position, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the al-Quds Committee, which considers the Palestinian issue a national cause, the Upper House said in a press release. He also underlined the unanimity of the Moroccan people in their continued support for and solidarity with the brotherly Palestinian people, in the defense of their legitimate rights and the strengthening of their resilience, particularly in the midst of the difficult circumstances in the Gaza Strip. Ould Errachid furthermore expressed the House of Councillors' willingness to elevate the level of cooperation ties with the Palestinian National Council, to bolster efficient parliamentary communication and promote the exchange of experiences and expertise in the different fields of mutual interest.
