
New-age life insurers tap group business opportunity in their first year of ops

Acko, Go Digit and CreditAccess, all of whom received life insurance licences in 2023, are betting on group products to drive premium collection and the business.
According to data from industry body Life Insurance Council,
Acko Life Insurance
's premium collection almost doubled to Rs 63 crore in fiscal 2025, compared with Rs 36 crore in FY24.
Go Digit Life
recorded Rs 1,068 crore in FY2025 compared with Rs 426 crore a year back. Credit Access Life Insurance recorded Rs 193 crore in insurance premium compared with Rs 97 crore the previous year.
This was the first full year of operations for these new-generation life insurance companies. Both Acko and Go Digit had the general insurance licence prior to that. While Go Digit is a publicly listed company now, Acko is privately held and was last valued at $1.4 billion in a funding round in 2023.
'Most of these new-generation companies have sold group life covers in their first financial year, which has helped them to bulk up premium collection quickly. It also helps set the internal and sales processes quickly,' a senior executive at an insurtech startup said on the condition of anonymity.
Under group products, life insurance companies typically sell employer-employee life covers and also club insurance covers to credit customers.

'Our initial focus was on group products, leveraging the quicker setup of servicing and sales infrastructure. Today, we have a balanced mix of both group and retail products, with plans to expand both segments equally,' Go Digit Life Insurance chief executive officer Sabyasachi Sarkar said.

Go Digit Life has four retail products and three group products and is hoping to scale up both businesses in the coming quarters, Sarkar added.
The new-generation insurance companies had adopted a retail-first approach for their general insurance business. Both Go Digit and Acko had focused on retail automobile insurance as the key product to scale up their business, but for life business they have gone the group business route.
The industry executive cited earlier in the story pointed out that for the life insurance play, it is always easier to disrupt the group market because most of the business there is pricing driven and also is up for renewal every year.
'For products like life, customer trust is the key, building that takes time, hence one way of getting into the market is through employer-employee products where consumers will get to know the brand, experience the claims settlement process and eventually start trusting the brand,' the executive said.
In general insurance, these startups had disrupted the business with strong use of technology and also by adding direct sales as a large part of their business, without depending fully on agents and broker networks.
'Employer-employee products are a focus area for us. Digit Life in its first full year of operations (FY25) has clocked over Rs 1,300 crore gross written premium,' Sarkar of Go Digit told ET.
But these brands are likely to face much bigger challenges in the life business, according to industry insiders.
'I think new-age life insurance companies will need to invest heavily in customer experience, ensure smooth claim settlement processes to give confidence to customers and also work very closely with the regulator,' said Vivek Ramji Iyer, partner in charge of financial services at Grant Thornton Bharat.
To quickly build trust during the purchase process, startups can invest in creating a claims settlement simulation process, Iyer said. 'They should also target rural areas to increase penetration of insurance cover, for that they can look to partner with common service centres in rural India.'

Travel to cost more from July as list of fares on AC, non-AC coaches out
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways has rationalised the basic fares for passenger train services, effective from July 1 this year. The changes apply to AC and non-AC reserved classes of mail and express trains. In an official circular issued on Monday, the Railways detailed the fare revisions, stating that non-AC class fares in mail and express trains have been increased by 1 paisa per kilometre, while all AC classes have seen a hike of 2 paisa per kilometre. Suburban trains and monthly season tickets (MST) have been exempted from the fare increase, citing the broader interest of daily commuters. There has been no change in the fare for ordinary second class travel up to 500 km. However, beyond this distance, a modest increase of half a paisa per kilometre has been implemented. Ordinary sleeper class and first-class passengers will also incur an extra charge of half a paisa per kilometre from July 1. 'No increase up to 500km but an increase by Rs 5 for distance 5,012 to 1,500 kms and an increase in fare by Rs 10 for distance 1,501 to 2,500 km have been made', remarked the government circular. The circular also stated that for journeys exceeding 2,501 to 3,000 km, there is an increase of Rs 15 in fare, in addition to a 0.5 paisa per kilometre rise in sleeper class charges. For AC chair car, AC-3 tier or 3-Economy, AC 2-tier, and AC First/Executive Class (Anubhuti), the fare has been increased by 2 paisa per kilometre. 'The fair revision also applies to premier and special trains services like Rajdhani, Shatabadi, Duranto, Vande Bharat, Tejas- Rajdhani, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Jan -Shatabadi, Yuva Express, AC Vistadome coaches, Anubhuti coaches, and ordinary non-suburban services in accordance with revised class-wise fare structure,' a senior railway official said. The ministry has clarified that there will be no increase in reservation charges, super fast surcharges, or other additional charges. 'The GST will continue to be levied as per applicable', the circular read. The Ministry of Railway said that tickets issued prior to July 1 will remain valid at the existing fare, with no fare adjustment.'

The Ministry of Defence is set to approve military proposals worth over Rs 1 lakh crore in a key meeting scheduled this week. This will be the first acquisition meeting since Operation Sindoor, aiming to enhance the capabilities of India's armed to defence officials who spoke to India Today, the proposals include a range of critical defence systems such as spy planes, sea mines, air defence missiles, and underwater autonomous major highlight of the meeting will be the likely clearance of three new regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) systems for the Indian Army. Technopark jobs grow 27 per cent over past five years
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Had it been a local body, Technopark would have surpassed Kerala's several municipalities in terms of total population! India's first IT park, which turns 35 years this month, currently provides jobs to over 80,000 people. In the past five years, Technopark achieved a significant growth in terms of the number of jobs and software exports by companies. 'The number of employees rose by 27%, from 63,000 in 2020-21 to 80,000 in 2024-25. And 45% of them are women. The park ensures a secure and empowering environment for women,' said IT Secretary Sambasiva Rao. Revenue from software exports registered 56% growth in four years - from Rs 8,501 crore in FY 2021 to Rs 13,255 crore in FY 2024 (data for FY 2025 is unavailable). With a total builtup space of 12.72 million square feet, the park now hosts over 500 IT/ITeS companies including MNCs, SMEs and Startups. Technopark's founding CEO G Vijayaraghavan, termed the five-year growth a positive development. 'This achievement should be viewed in the backdrop of the IT industry's stagnation globally. 27% growth in jobs is a big feat and we have the potential to achieve more,' he told TNIE.
