The storm, the sixth of the season in the western Pacific, is forecast to reach typhoon strength before passing near Hong Kong overnight. It is expected to bring heavy rain along China's southern coast and then weaken as it heads west to Vietnam and Laos.
In Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific said that all flights arriving or departing between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday would be cancelled or delayed. The airline is waiving ticket change fees, it said.
The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a warning of gale-force or stronger winds and potential flooding in low-lying coastal areas due to storm surges. A 30-kilometre bridge that crosses the water between Hong Kong and Macao will be closed overnight, Hong Kong broadcaster RTHK reported.
Authorities in Hainan province, a Chinese island that is a popular beach resort, said that three ports would suspend operations starting Saturday night in Haikou, the provincial capital.

Hong Kong issues highest storm warning as Typhoon Wipha approaches

BEIJING: Hong Kong issued its highest storm warning on Sunday (Jul 20) as Typhoon Wipha, packing winds of more than 167km per hour, brought heavy rain and wind across the territory, forcing the cancellation of more than 200 flights. The city's weather observatory raised its storm signal to No. 10 at 9.20am local time and said it expected it to remain at that level "for some time". Wipha will skirt around 50km to the south of the observatory, the warning showed. Hurricane-force wind is affecting the southern part of Hong Kong, the observatory said. Cathay Pacific Airways cancelled all of its flights arriving or departing Hong Kong airport between 5am and 6pm on Sunday. It waived ticket change fees and made arrangements for customers to re-book.

1 killed as South Korea rain death toll rises to 11

SEOUL: At least one person was killed and four others missing during heavy downpours on Sunday (Jul 20) in South Korea, officials said, bringing the death toll to 11 from torrential rains that have lashed the country this week. Close to 170mm of rain hit Gapyeong county in Gyeonggi province - located 70km east of Seoul - early on Sunday. "We expect at least four missing now on top of one dead in Gapyeong," an interior ministry official told AFP. The total number of deaths from the five-day deluge is now at least 11, according to official data. A woman in her 70s was killed when her house collapsed in a landslide around 4.40am on Sunday in Gapyeong, Yonhap news agency reported. Most of the deaths have occurred in the southern county of Sancheong, which has seen nearly 800mm of rain since Wednesday. South Korea typically experiences monsoon rains in July and is usually well-prepared. But this week, the country's southern regions were hit by especially intense downpours, with some of the heaviest hourly rainfall on record, official weather data showed. Scientists say climate change has made extreme weather events more frequent and intense around the world. In 2022, South Korea endured record-breaking rains and flooding, which killed at least 11 people.

Death toll rises to 37 in Vietnam after Ha Long Bay tourist ferry sinks

Authorities have yet to disclose details about the tourists or their nationalities. One of the rescued, a 10-year-old boy, told state media outlet VietnamNet: "I took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived then swam up, I even shouted for help, then I was pulled up by a boat with soldiers on". Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent his condolences on Saturday to the families of the deceased and called on the defence and public security ministries to conduct urgent search and rescue. Authorities would "investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations", a government statement said. CNA has contacted Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find out if any Singaporeans were on board the tourist boat. Tran Trong Hung, a resident in the Ha Long Bay area, told AFP: "The sky turned dark at around 2pm." There were "hailstones as big as toes with torrential rain, thunderstorm and lightning", he said. Torrential rain also lashed northern Hanoi, Thai Nguyen and Bac Ninh provinces on Saturday. Several trees were knocked down in the capital by strong winds. The storm followed three days of intense heat, with the mercury hitting 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas. Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, was quoted in VNExpress as saying that the thunderstorms in northern Vietnam were not caused by the influence of Tropical Storm Wipha in the South China Sea. Wipha entered the South China Sea on Sunday gaining strength, and is on course to make landfall in Vietnam early next week. Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations, with millions of people visiting its blue-green waters and rainforest-topped limestone islands each year. Last year, 30 vessels sank at boat lock areas in coastal Quang Ninh province along Ha Long Bay after Typhoon Yagi brought strong wind and waves.
