Nostalgic film sequel breaks records on Netflix with 46,700,000 views

The highly anticipated sequel to an Adam Sandler movie comedy – coming 29 years after the original – has now claimed Netflix's biggest opening weekend of all time in the US.
Happy Gilmore 2 saw Sandler revisit popular territory as part of his mega deal with the streamer, reportedly worth $250million (£186m) and renewed multiple times.
And Netflix will be seeing this as money very well spent after the golfing comedy sequel amassed a huge 46,700,000 views in its first three days alone on the platform.
Not only is that the most watched a English language film has even been in the US for its opening weekend, but it's also the biggest-ever audience an Adam Sandler flick has attracted during its crucial first three days.
The xx star has made multiple original movies for Netflix so far, including Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween and rare serious film Spaceman.

Happy Gilmore 2 was released on July 25 and had clocked these figures by the end of the day on Sunday, while fans also boosted the original Happy Gilmore into third place with 11,400,000 views last week on Netflix.
The 1996 film followed the titular character, played by Sandler, a failed ice hockey player trying to raise enough money to stop the foreclosure of his grandmother's house, who fortuitously discovers he can hit long shots in golf and gains a fan following.
But just as the former Saturday Night Live actor has often split opinion, among the rave reviews from die-hard fans are many decrying the quality of this new 'zero-star' sequel, branding it 'tripe' and 'a terrible waste of time'.
Jaja B even admitted in their reaction on Rotten Tomatoes: 'I think this is my last/final break-up with a once great Adam Sandler.'
In the follow-up film, a terrible stroke of bad luck puts golf's one-time bad boy back on the back foot and in desperate need of a comeback – which is offered to him by Maxi Energy Drink CEO Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie), who is sponsoring a new golfing league of which he wants Happy to be the star.
'I hate to do this… but this was 0/10 stars. Of If I could've given 0, I would have. It was cameo central and cheap, no effort jokes. Don't meet your heroes,' wrote Sean M in his reaction on the review aggregator site.
Stephen M agreed, calling it 'pointless' and 'awful', although it does currently hold a fresh 70% audience rating at the time of publication.
'Sandler is rinsing that Netflix money and producing tripe. No funny moments at all. Happy Gilmore was great, but this one is the worst movie I've watched,' he complained.
'The movie left a sour taste in my mouth [and] was a terrible waste of time,' added Austin C while Rog S moaned: 'This movie was a flaming pile of garbage.'
Another fan echoed these thoughts, branding Happy Gilmore 2 'by far the worst Adam Sandler movie ever produced', despite calling the star 'one of my all-time faves'.
'I'm shocked that so many personalities read this script and attached their names to the film. This ruined my Friday night,' they added.
Happy Gilmore 2 does boast an impressive cast, welcoming back the likes of Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, original director Dennis Dugan, and Ben Stiller in his previous role as Hal from both Happy Gilmore and Hubie Halloween.
The movie also features pro-golfer John Daly as a fictionalised version of himself, and multiple members of Sandler's immediate family, including daughter Sunny, alongside Safdie, Bad Bunny and a swathe of cameos from the likes of Haley Joel Osment, Steve Buscemi, Post Malone, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Travis Kelce, Rob Schneider and Oliver Hudson – and a whole host of professional golf stars.
Other viewers had more fun with the film though, and urged people not to see it as high art, but purely entertainment.
'Is this going to win Oscars? No more than the first did… It was a ride of fan service with familiar faves and call backs in nearly every scene, and it works for what it is,' insisted Marcus J, while Bailey L added: 'It is just as it intended: Stupid, yet funny as hell. The cameos alone make this movie perfect. It's just fun to watch if you give in.'
'To see Adam come back and make a movie filled with cameo appearances and pay homage to those who passed away almost brings a tear to my eye. This movie is great had me laughing the entire time and it filled me with a sense of nostalgia I haven't felt in a while,' shared Johnny G.
Original Happy Gilmore cast members who died in the intervening years included Carl Weathers, who played Happy's mentor; Frances Bay, who was Grandma Gilmore; Richard Kiel and Joe Flaherty.
Meanwhile Liana O described it as the 'best comedy I've seen in years' while Syah Izani K commented: 'I laughed from the beginning to the end of the movie.'
'This is just as good as the first one,' enthused Joshua C in his reaction. 'It brought back the golden age of comedy movies. I haven't even finished it, just got to Stephen Smith in it and couldn't even wait to write a review.' More Trending
Which could explain the film's positive rating so far, alongside Sandler's passionate fans.
Happy Gilmore 2 has received mixed to negative reactions from critics, with Empire saying it 'never ascends higher than 'hit-and-miss'' but has 'sheer goofy, golf-y geniality' in a three-star review.
But The Daily Beast called it potentially 'the worst sequel of all time' and observed: 'Arguably the least inspired film in the actor's canon, if not all of movie history.'
Happy Gilmore 2 is streaming exclusively on Netflix now.

Emmerdale legend comes to Dylan's rescue - and he has a lot of explaining to do

Dylan Penders' (Fred Kettle) return to Emmerdale has been less than ideal for the lad – instead of getting himself clean in rehab as intended, he's returned as one of drug lord Ray's (Joe Absolom) lackies. He's immediately found himself in a life-threatening situation too – having been stabbed in the leg by Kyle (Huey Quinn) with a dirty pitchfork as he attempted to do over one of Moira's (Natalie J Robb) barns. Now that wound is infected and Dylan can't ask for any help. When pushed by April (Amelia Flanagan), he refuses to see a doctor, instead choosing to hide out at the Cricket Pavillion. As a doctor won't work, he and April concoct a dodgy plan B – to raid the vets for supplies and fix him themselves. Because who needs six years of a medical degree when you can watch how to sort a deadly wound on YouTube? They sneak into the surgery to get their supplies when they're caught red handed – by Paddy (Dominic Brunt). Thankfully, Paddy is in his good Samaritan mode and, shocked by the state of Dylan, sets to work sorting the wound. He then offers Dylan a bed for the night. But he's getting himself involved in something serious, risking his registration to help the homeless lad. And worse, he risks the wrath of Mandy (Lisa Riley) and Marlon (Mark Charnock) when they arrive. They've all got such faith in Dylan and have no idea the dark circles he's now mixing with. Later, Ray tells Dylan that he's got more work from him and when Mandy is busy, Dylan reveals a stash of drugs in his backpack. The next morning, while eating breakfast with Paddy, Dylan ignores Ray's texts, a dangerous move. In the Woolpack Paddy, Rhona (Zoe Henry), and Marlon discover that Dylan was the one stabbed by Kyle, and it puts a whole new spin on things. Now Paddy and Marlon have a new problem on their hands as they must work on Rhona to stop her telling Moira that Dylan was the one in the barn. More Trending Dylan shakes off April to do the drugs drop, which he plans to be his last as he tells Ray no to the next job on offer. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? A bold move, and one that is strangely well received. It's a fair assumption to think Ray might be a bit miffed at Dylan's gall, but Ray seems to take it well. Or does he? The fact he's later seen spying on Dylan and April walking through the village would suggest not. View More » It seems instead he's plotting something, and it involves April too. But what? Meghan Markle's snappy one-word demand of Prince Harry and his one-word response

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known for often putting on affectionate displays when in public - and a lip reader has decoded an exchange during one tactile appearance A lip-reader has decoded a snappy exchange between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they were on their royal-style tour of Colombia. ‌ The Sussexes embarked on their trip to the South American country last year to back projects aimed at safeguarding young people from online harm, arriving hand-in-hand in Bogota to meet Vice President Francia Márquez and her husband, Rafael Yerney Pinillo. ‌ After their first engagement in the nation's capital, Harry and Meghan were seen on camera holding hands as they left the Vice President's office, where a lip-reader captured a quick but simple demand being exchanged by the royal couple. It's not the first time a lip-reader has witnessed an unexpected exchange between the two, as Harry was seen 'mansplaining' to Meghan on the Palace balcony. ‌ According to professional lip reader Nicola Hickling, Meghan quietly muttered an order to Harry, saying simply, "hand", before he replied, "Here you go." Harry and Meghan were invited to Colombia by Vice President Marquez, who led a press conference ahead of their arrival, where she revealed she was moved to invite Harry and Meghan to the country after watching their Netflix documentary series, where they spoke freely about their turbulent time as working members of the royal family. ‌ Vice President Marquez explained: "I saw the Netflix series about their life, their story and that moved me and motivated me to say that this is a woman who deserves to come to our country and tell her story and her exchange will undoubtedly be an empowerment to so many women in the world." Harry and Meghan's packed itinerary over the days of their non-official visit saw them visit local schools to encourage students to improve their digital literacy and promote a greater awareness of mental health. They also "had the exceptional opportunity to engage with elders, youth and women who embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians," as they visited a children's school, before meeting with the Colombian Invictus team. ‌ The Sussexes trip was quickly dubbed a 'DIY royal tour', as despite having all the earmarks of an official state visit, Harry and Meghan were not acting on behalf of the Firm for their journey to South America. Their trip to Colombia raised eyebrows from many, as Harry and Meghan were flanked by a heavy private security presence at their engagements. The intense security detail led to many asking who footed the bill for their four-day tour. ‌ In a statement put out by the office of vice president Francia Marquez, it said: "This visit was the result of a collective effort. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex financed their trip and that of their team with their own resources. The events held in the various places visited were co-financed with resources from international cooperation and philanthropy that generously contributed to this visit. 'The Ministry of Equality and Equity and the Vice Presidency guaranteed the technical requirements, mobility and participation of young people, women and communities."
