Watch: Rains, tornado-like dust devil storms hit some parts of UAE

Khaleej Times5 days ago
As the summer heat intensifies, parts of the UAE have been treated to a refreshing shift in weather. Scattered showers over the past few days have brought welcome relief, particularly across the country's eastern region.
Today is no different. Videos shared by Storm Centre captured showed rainfall pouring onto roads in areas such as Safi. In one video, rain lashes a car's windshield, obscuring visibility and hinting at the intensity of the downpour. Another clip shows water pooling along the roadside, forming shallow puddles that glisten under the grey skies.
However, the rainfall wasn't just a gentle drizzle. In some locations, it was heavy enough to disrupt driving conditions and obscure views, prompting authorities to step in with safety advisories.

Abu Dhabi Police issued a weather alert for Al Ain, urging motorists to drive cautiously in light of the rainy conditions. The authority also urged motorists to adhere to variable speed limits displayed on electronic road signs.

But it wasn't just rain turning heads. Storm Centre also shared a striking video of a massive sandstorm. The swirling gust of sand appeared to shoot skyward in a funnel-like shape, resembling a tornado. The storm was so intense that it blanketed the affected area in a brown-ish haze.

Some residents on Sunday (July 27) also observed a massive sandstorm or a gustnado — a small, short-lived whirlwind that often appears during strong thunderstorms, especially in desert climates.
Unlike true tornadoes, gustnadoes are not connected to a thunderstorm cloud base. Though less destructive than full-scale tornadoes, they can still kick up sand and debris, causing visibility issues and posing risks for motorists.
Summer rains in UAE
While summer rain may seem surprising to some, meteorologists say it's not entirely uncommon in the UAE.
But while the occasional rain during the season brings respite, residents still need to be careful and take serious precautions to prioritise their health and safety.
Summer in the UAE isn't just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can lead to serious health conditions, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.

The highest temperature recorded over the country today was 49.9°C in Owtaid (Al Dhafra region) at 2pm, according to the met department. This is a slight dip from yesterday's maximum temperature of 51.8°C. On Sunday, August 3, temperatures will range between 44°C and 49°C in internal areas. UAE's National Center of Meteorology has said that rainfall can be expected over the next few days, too. On Sunday, skies will remain fair to partly cloudy, with a probability of some convective cloud formation eastward and southward by afternoon, may be associated with rainfall. The NCM sent out a yellow alert on Saturday afternoon, warning residents of rain in parts of Al Ain. They had earlier alerted of a chance of convective cloud formation associated with rainfall and fresh winds causing blowing dust and sand, reducing visibility at times with a speed of 40 km/hr with clouds over some Eastern and Southern areas from 2pm to 8pm on Saturday. The met department predicted that it will be humid by Sunday night and Monday morning over some western areas, with a probability of fog or mist formation. Humidity levels will reach a maximum of 90 per cent in coastal and island areas. Light to moderate Southeasterly to Northeasterly winds, freshening at times during daytime, with a speed of 10–25 reaching 35 Km/hr, can be expected. Watch: Hail, rain lash some parts of UAE while others endure sweltering heat

While temperatures have hit a high of 51.8 in the UAE today, residents in some parts of the country have been enjoying the respite of sudden showers, and even hail. The NCM sent out an alert on Friday afternoon, and rain chasers have been sharing videos of heavy showers, wet roads in Al Ain. UAE's National Centre of Meterology sent out orange and yellow alerts for Al Ain and surrounding areas, warning residents of heavy showers and hazardous weather conditions if they choose to step outdoors. #Rain#NCM — اÙÙرÙز اÙÙØ·ÙÙ ÙÙأرصاد (@ncmuae) August 1, 2025 Abu Dhabi too sent out a warning, urging residents to take note of bad weather and be prepared accordingly. "Abu Dhabi Civil Defence urges caution due to fluctuating rainy weather conditions, and calls on everyone to take precautions during rainfall and avoid areas with flowing wadis and water accumulation," they said in a post on X. Rain chasers in the country have shared videos of hail in parts of Al Ain. Some videos showed heavy showers on Al Hair Nahel road, north of Al Ain. UAE temperatures rose to its highest level so far this year on Friday, August 1, with the mercury soaring to a sweltering 51.8°C, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said. The mercury rose to this record threshold in Al Ain's Sweihan at 3pm, it added. Long before summer peaked in the UAE, temperatures soared to a scorching 51.6°C on May 24 also in the desert region of Sweihan, which is known for its hot, hyper‑arid climate.
