Dubai approves new ‘Dubai Orchestra' project to boost cultural presence
The initiative aims to enhance Emirati arts and culture on the global stage, reinforce Dubai's position as a centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a hub for talent.
The project will elevate the efficiency of Dubai's arts sector and support local talent.
Dubai Orchestra boosts creativity
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed affirmed that Dubai continues to provide a model for cultural development through its projects and initiatives, guided by the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
'Art is a universal language that connects people and Dubai is a hub for initiatives that build bridges between cultures and celebrate creativity. We continue to support and empower the cultural and artistic sectors by establishing an integrated and sustainable infrastructure that promotes the growth and prosperity of cultural and creative industries, and enriches the global cultural movement. With new initiatives, Dubai is poised to further grow in status as a destination for major international events, innovative ideas and pioneering projects,' Sheikh Hamdan added.
Sheikh Hamdan noted that Dubai attracts talent within a creative environment, emphasising that the Dubai Orchestra project reflects the spirit of the emirate, embodies the uniqueness of its cultural identity, and reinforces the values of creativity and innovation.
'We have approved the 'Dubai Orchestra' project as a key avenue for expanding international cultural collaboration. It contributes to developing the cultural and arts sectors, further highlighting Dubai's rich and diverse cultural landscape and heritage,' he added.
Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said the approval marks a step in reinforcing Dubai's presence on the global cultural stage.
The project reflects the emirate's vision to become a centre for the creative economy and lays the foundation for nurturing future generations capable of expressing the universal language of human creativity.
'Dubai's position on the global cultural map results from the clear and inspiring vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose efforts have transformed our city into a vibrant home for creativity and artistic innovation. The 'Dubai Orchestra' will enhance our community's exceptional talent and drive music's powerful role in celebrating our cultural diversity,' she said.
Sheikha Latifa highlighted that the project represents an opportunity to strengthen Dubai's creative scene, foster its musical identity, and advance its global competitiveness in the cultural and artistic sectors.
''Dubai Orchestra' will be a catalyst for growth, reflecting our ongoing commitment to elevating the music sector, enabling creative talent, and deepening the role of the arts as a bridge between cultures. The Dubai Orchestra project seeks to nurture a creative environment that advances the local music sector, attracts talent, and empowers homegrown creatives to pursue their passion while enriching Dubai's musical landscape.
Elevating Dubai's cultural vision
It aligns with the objectives of Dubai's Creative Economy Strategy and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to position the emirate among the world's top three urban economies.
The project also supports Dubai Culture's mandate and sectoral priorities to strengthen the city's cultural and creative industries.
The project supports the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and its targets, particularly the objective of making Dubai the best city in terms of living experience and cultural vibrancy over the next decade.
The project marks a chapter in Dubai's creative landscape and is set to stimulate the arts sector and drive economic growth through its cultural, social, and economic impact.
By embedding culture and the arts into everyday life, it deepens public appreciation of their value and enriches Dubai's cultural fabric.
The Dubai Orchestra aims to have Emirati talent make up 50 per cent of its members by 2033.
In the coming phase, the orchestra will roll out initiatives to deepen community engagement, including youth-focused programmes, partnerships with community organisations, and educational opportunities that nurture artistic talent.
These efforts will empower emerging musicians, elevate their skills, and position them to deliver musical experiences while preserving and promoting the region's musical heritage.

Meet the Indian-Syrian chef duo behind Manao, a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant in Dubai
Earning a Michelin star within just five months of opening is a rare feat, even more so when there isn't a celebrity chef leading the kitchen. Yet, that's exactly what Thai-inspired restaurant Manao did in May, becoming part of the 2025 Michelin Guide Dubai. Helmed by Indian chef Abhiraj Khatwani, 30, Manao is a reflection of his multicultural upbringing and a shared culinary vision with his mentor and business partner, Mohamad Orfali, the acclaimed Syrian chef behind Orfali Bros in Dubai, which also has one Michelin star. 'Honestly, it hasn't even fully hit me yet,' Khatwani, who was also awarded Michelin's Young Chef Award during the ceremony, tells The National. 'It feels more like a relief – for the team, for everyone who's supported us. But we're just doing what we set out to do, which is serve good food and make people happy.' Born in Jeddah, raised in Dubai and educated in Montreal, Khatwani says his path to the kitchen wasn't straightforward. But food, he adds, was always a part of it. 'We always had people over ... 20, 30 people every other day,' he recalls of his childhood. 'My mum cooked everything, so hospitality was a way of life.' After university in Canada, Khatwani chose to study culinary arts at a school outside London, which led him to working kitchens in Denmark as well as Thailand, where he began to develop a deep appreciation for Thai flavours. In 2018, after returning to Dubai, he opened The Yellow Monkey, a casual Thai eatery in JBR, which quickly earned a dedicated following. It was here that he first met Orfali, already a well-known TV chef then. 'I wasn't a big fan of Thai food,' Orfali tells The National. 'But after tasting Abhiraj's food, I fell in love. It was different – creative, balanced, exciting.' The Covid-19 pandemic lead to The Yellow Monkey shutting in 2020. The chefs' paths crossed again two years later. Orfali, who had already taken Orfali Bros to great heights, including earning its own Michelin star, was looking to expand his culinary empire and took Khatwani under his wing. Their mutual admiration evolved into a business partnership, and Manao was born, opening in December last year to immediate acclaim. An ode to Thailand, food at Manao is served via an 11-course tasting menu, shaped by Khatwani's expertise in the country's cuisine and the Orfali Bros formula of refined cooking techniques. You won't find your traditional green curries or pad Thai noodles here, but rather modern interpretations that blend flavours masterfully. Made in Dubai, for Dubai In many ways, the city of Dubai helped birth Manao, Orfali says. 'We wanted to add something new to the scene, something elegant but accessible,' he says. 'Thai at its soul, but with layers of global influence. 'We always say: 'If something works in Dubai, it can work anywhere,'' he adds. 'Dubai has one of the most diverse, demanding audiences in the world. If they approve it, it means something. 'Manao will only ever exist in Dubai. It's made for this city.' Like Orfali Bros, with its fresh take on Mediterranean cuisine, Manao is not supposed to be flashy. Even its location, in Jumeirah, close to Orfali Bros, was deliberately chosen and not intended to be a fine-dining destination. Chasing people, not stars Orfali Bros recently retained its Michelin star on the 2025 Michelin Guide Dubai. It also topped this year's Mena's 50 Best Restaurants list and earned a spot in the coveted annual listing's global ranking, coming in at No 37. 'We didn't set out to earn a Michelin star,' says Orfali. 'We're cooking for people. Our guests are our priority, and our team is our family. The stars come when you focus on what matters.' Orfali, who works alongside his brothers Wassim and Omar, is putting the finishing touches on his a new restaurant concept, Three Bros, set to open soon. As he has done with Manao and Khatwani, he wants to turn his attention to young chefs, giving them a platform to shine. 'That's my investment plan for now, to do more by giving an opportunity to other chefs from the team, and replicate the concept like what we're doing with Abhiraj,' says Orfali. As for Khatwani, he's staying grounded. 'We want to keep innovating, keep improving,' he says. 'I think we just have to keeping doing what we're doing.' But Orfali, who calls Khatwani 'the fourth bro', might have something more up his sleeve for him. 'I want to push him to do something Indian,' he teases. 'He'll kill it.'

Post Malone dazzles fans in Saudi Arabia during Esports World Cup's kick-off concert
The 2025 Esports World Cup kicked off at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh with a Post Malone concert on Thursday night. The American singer-songwriter opened his performance with the 2019 hit Circles followed by a track list of fan favourites. The crowd revelled in a mix tape of his biggest hits, singing along throughout. Complementing Malone's set list were special effects used on stage to bring each song to life. During Sunflower, from the soundtrack of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Malone approached fans and even some of the VIPs in attendance. Later, he shared a moment with chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, one of the Esports World Cup's ambassadors. With the crowd warmed up, it was time for a performance of Malone's 2018 hit song Rockstar, which got some of the loudest crowd appreciation of the night. Despite being a short concert, it served its purpose in getting the people of Riyadh, as well as its visitors, ready and excited for the competition about to unfold. Malone ended his set with a message of good luck to all the competitors at the tournament, and a wish for those attending to enjoy the event. Entertainment at the opening ceremony Malone's set was preceded with a lively performance of the tournament's official song Til My Fingers Bleed by Dino from K-pop band Seventeen, featuring American rapper and singer Duckwrth, and Telle Smith of metal band The Word Alive. Before the artists took to the stage, fans flocked into the arena to enjoy various activations. Many watched as Saudi Arabia's premier esports outfit, Team Falcon, competed in a tournament for the game Valorant. The game was projected on two large screens accompanied by live commentary. Outside the venue, attendees enjoyed dishes from a selection of food trucks, which served up everything from burgers and fries to ice cream and bubble tea. A DJ also provided a soundtrack of remixed tunes. The evening sidestepped many of the typical symbolic moves that signal the start of such a tournament, such as a ribbon cutting or speeches from organisers. Instead, the opening ceremony focused on the musical performances. Running until August 24 in Boulevard City, Riyadh, the tournament is the largest esports event in the world, in terms of games played and prize pool for winners. The 2025 tournament features a $70 million prize pool, the largest in esports history. It surpasses last year's total of $62.5 million, showing the growth and ambition of the competition. It will feature 25 tournaments across 24 titles, offering a mix of strategy, shooter, sports, fighting and mobile games. This year, organisers have also set up a fan festival for visitors to enjoy outside of the competition arenas. These areas will host miniature competitions, meet and greets with celebrities and influencers from the world of gaming, as well as a museum dedicated to the history of gaming.
