Larry Chen Has Seen It All and Done It All With Cars. Now, He's Put 20 Years of Photos Into This Book
My taste in cars and, especially, car content is shaped by Larry Chen. That doesn't make me special, as I'm one of (actually) millions who were introduced to his work during those formative teenage years of life. Growing up in the Missouri Ozarks, I'd never seen the likes of what he captured through his Canon, and even now, after nearly a decade in automotive media, I'm still floored. He's so good he could write a book about it, and wouldn't you know it, he has.
Life at Shutter Speed is a 400+ page artistic compilation with 20 chapters, one for each year of Chen's career. It's laid out in reverse-chronological order, starting with his newest work that spotlights insane factory builds and automotive celebs like Sung Kang, while going back to 2005 and earlier when he shot SoCal events for fun. It's published by Carrara Books, a firm that is still putting out fantastic physical car media in today's landscape. This set with Sung Kang is definitely top-five for me. What I realized while flipping through the 2,500 or so photos is that Chen has shot cars and moments that nobody else could. Whether we're talking about a 1,300-horsepower Nissan concept that I'd only seen before in crappy press photos, or Ken Block's Hoonicorn Mustang spinning around a switch-flipping low rider, he's captured it all in his style that's often imitated but never duplicated.
Jeff Zwart, a longtime car ad producer, Pikes Peak racer, and talented automotive photographer himself, wrote this of Chen in his foreword for the book: 'Larry seemed to be everywhere on the mountain, and not just shooting the race action in a new way, but capturing the tension in the pits in a pure, authentic way that made me feel he was one of us.'
Really, if you cut that quote after the first five words, it would still be accurate. Photo by Larry Chen, courtesy Carrara Media
If the internet has been part of your car hobby at all in the past two decades, Larry Chen has influenced you. He's taken photos that you had as your desktop background, whether you knew it or not. That image of a Nissan S14 drift car that's been seared in your head since you were 14? He shot it.
Heck, Larry was even there at Fontana for GT Live 2004, the one-off Japanese Super GT exhibition that's effectively canonized amongst the Fast and Furious generation. I don't think it's any coincidence that it became 'the event that started it all,' in Chen's words. Fate would have it that an entire subculture's most prolific and recognizable artist would be in attendance at a show that's now part of stateside JDM lore. The idea that 'Larry seemed to be everywhere' was reinforced by a conversation I had with someone just last weekend. The person I was talking with brought him up in passing, and to be honest, I was surprised they were even a car person. I wasn't surprised to learn that they were a Larry Chen fan, though, because who isn't? Anyway, I mentioned seeing Larry at races over the years—the Long Beach Grand Prix, the Rolex 24 at Daytona—and wondering how he got to those spots around the track. I'd ask track officials that question after being denied access myself, and on more than one occasion, I got the answer: 'Well, he's Larry.'
Dang right, he is. The man himself. Photo by Larry Chen, courtesy Carrara Media
You can buy a Standard Edition copy of Life at Shutter Speed for $124.99. There was a run of $274.99 Limited Edition copies, but those all sold out. The book's official release date is September 29, though it's available for pre-order now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and wherever books are sold. Courtesy Carrara Media

Your Daily TeenScope for July 20, 2025
Let's face it—most 'teen' horoscopes are written by folks whose ages haven't ended with '-teen' since 2002 and are subsequently pretty cringe. We can't guarantee that our daily horo will never be cringe, but we can guarantee that it'll at least be useful. Aries You still feel great. That's why you should find a few new ways to have fun -- even if you're totally jaded. It's a good time for you and your people to run around looking for new people and places. Taurus You have more to think about than anyone realizes, so you may need to cloister yourself away for a while to get it all worked out. Take your time and consider every last option! Gemini You're more social than most people, and on a day like today, that quality is bright and shiny! Everyone can see that you're the right person to get to know, and you might not have time for them all. Cancer You can recall the tiniest details of stuff that happened quite a while ago -- at least you can if it's important to you! Amaze friends and family with your eerie powers and see what they remember. Leo You're having plenty of fun -- especially at school, if you've started by now. If not, your mind is still quite hungry for new knowledge, and you may find inspiration in odd places. What do the planets say about your love life? Receive cosmic advice with your Daily Love Horoscope. Virgo Your energy isn't exactly perfect today, but you don't care -- in fact, you'd rather kick back and have fun than get serious with any projects, so that might actually be a net positive for you! Libra You're feeling pretty odd about someone who is alternately giving and demanding. It's time to strike a balance between giving and getting, so make sure they hear how it's going to be. Scorpio A parent or some other adult needs your help, but they might not know it yet. Tell them what to do or show them what's going wrong, and they'll be eternally grateful. Be nice about it! Sagittarius Try not to let yourself fall into a rut today -- you have more going on than you'd ever have thought, and can have amazing good times all while getting more done than anyone else you know. Capricorn You are feeling pretty nutty today, and might get more attention from parents -- and even grandparents -- than you really want. Make them happy enough to leave you alone for a bit. Aquarius Try to help a friend who needs something -- it shouldn't be that hard, and it's good to build up a cache of points to cash in later. You're at least partially doing good for its own sake, though! Pisces You may find that your people aren't making a whole lot of sense today, but that's at least partly your own confusion. Everything seems a lot more ambiguous than usual, and you can't decide whom to believe in. Find your cosmic purpose. Receive personalized astrological guidance with Astrology+. Holloway retains BMF title as Poirier retires
Max Holloway retained the symbolic BMF title as Dustin Poirier's esteemed career ended in defeat at UFC 318 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Holloway's volume of strikes helped him win an entertaining contest by unanimous decision as he became the first fighter to defend the belt awarded to the UFC's "baddest". Afterwards Holloway called out lightweight champion Ilia Topuria before paying tribute to fellow American Poirier. "I've got some history with the champ. UFC, it's your move next, baby, but I'm done talking," said Holloway. "This is Dustin's retirement fight - give it up to my man." Former interim lightweight champion Poirier, 36, retires as one of the most respected athletes to step foot inside the octagon. After making his UFC debut in 2011, Poirier won 22 of 32 fights and retires as arguably the best fighter to never win an undisputed title. "I'm grateful for this experience and journey. I want to thank (UFC president) Dana White and the UFC for giving a kid a platform to make something of his life, to help keep my family is a safe place," said an emotional Poirier. "I'm forever in debt to the company and mixed martial arts. It's taught me everything I know and I'm just thankful I got to walk this walk." Holloway beats Poirier at third attempt The bout concludes the pair's epic rivalry after Poirier's victories in 2012 and 2019. After suffering defeat for the lightweight title in his most recent fight against Islam Makhachev in 2024, Poirier said Holloway would be his final bout. Poirier, accompanied by rapper Lil Wayne, was greeted by a rousing reception in front of his home crowd as he skipped his way towards the octagon. Holloway - as he called for before the fight out of respect to Poirier - was booed on his walkout, before making a fast start when the fight got under way. After mixing up his leg strikes and punches well, Holloway dropped Poirier with a straight right in a confident first round. Holloway remained in control in the second round as he knocked Poirier down again, before the momentum shifted. With seconds of the round remaining, Poirier landed a one-two punch combination which dropped Holloway, before the bell saved him from more damage on the ground. The action continued to go back and forth - Holloway landed longer combinations but Poirier's strikes appeared more damaging - before the crowd rose to their feet in anticipation of the final round. With 10 seconds to go Holloway pointed to the ground in trademark fashion, inviting the pair to stand and trade. Holloway knocked Justin Gaethje out in similar fashion last year and, although he got the better of the exciting exchange, Poirier survived until the final bell. The pair embraced in respect as Holloway kissed Poirier on the forehead before sharing a few words. "Max is tough to deal with in here. He's slick; he's crafty; he's fast; he's the champ. I got nothing but respect for Max - he's one of the good guys," said Poirier. "I've been chasing my dreams - it's been incredible. I'm a kid living his dream out here, throwing punches, throwing knees. It's incredible." Poirier's win over Holloway in 2019 for the interim lightweight belt remains the only UFC championship he won. He lost three undisputed title fights - against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira and Makhachev - but retires with a glittering resume regardless. He got the better of his trilogy with Conor McGregor - he is the only fighter to knock him out, in 2021 - and has iconic victories over Dan Hooker, Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. 'Truly one of the greatest' - what fighters said Islam Makhachev on X: "Congratulations, Dustin. You're truly one of the greatest to ever step into the cage. It was an honor and a privilege to share it with you." Jorge Masvidal on X: "Congrats on an awesome career Dustin! It's been great sharing this journey with you. Thanks for all the good times and everything you brought to the team. Enjoy retirement, you've more than earned it." Jon Jones on X: "I thought Dustin's performance was amazing. He definitely still has it. But it's good to see him walk away just because he wants to. That needs to become normalised in the future. Sick of fighters getting to the point of mumbling." Belal Muhammad on X: "Paid in full. Dustin is a legend. Amazing career." Your Daily DogScope for July 20, 2025
Life is ruff when you're four-legged and furry with a completely clueless human. Fortunately, our daily Dogscope can brighten those boneless days with a little encouragement and a helping paw. Aries You can't always be agreeable and charming. When steak is involved, you have to be more forceful. Meat isn't the issue here but the approach will come in handy. Taurus When your owner walks in the door, your energy levels are at opposite extremes. You're full of it, while they are depleted. It's hard to imagine how one can relate to another, but you'll both benefit from a long walk. Gemini Your owner can strike up a conversation with just about anyone, and without much thought. That may be one of their human charms, but it sure gets in the way of a good walk. If you want to make tracks, you'll have to pull. Cancer Stuck at a dinner party? Don't stay in your basket and miss all the table scraps. If you can charm your owner you can charm other humans, too, so circulate. Leo There are no two ways about it. Your owner has the final word, right or wrong. So if you want to do something on the Bad Dog list, wait until you have the doghouse to yourself. What do the planets say about your love life? Receive cosmic advice with your Daily Love Horoscope. Virgo You know how to express your ideas. In fact, you express and express and express them. But getting them understood is the other half of the equation, so try to use human-ese. Libra Staying away from other people's food is a big challenge. It's downright magnetic. But begging for it will be a definite faux-pas, so try to follow human etiquette. Scorpio You're used to thinking of other dogs are stronger forces, but that's all in your head. You could travel up the totem pole by simply understanding this: the outcome of each and every dog fight is up to you. Sagittarius You go from being overlooked to being examined with a fine-toothed comb. It's one extreme or the other, but you can pull the attention back to the middle by simply being affectionate. Capricorn Safety is the last thing on your mind when in the woods, but it shouldn't be. You're more domesticated than you realize, so stay close to your human. Aquarius Old relatives expect the worst of you, even though your bad behavior is a thing of the past. It will take a while to live down your puppy days, but in the meantime, you'll have to put up with their attitude. Pisces You may not be able to read the poetry but you can smell the dinner. Someone is getting through to your owner, as you are well aware. Check them out thoroughly before you become the third wheel. Find your cosmic purpose.
