Are existing mechanisms effective in preventing custodial violence?

The Hindu10-07-2025
The gruesome death of security guard B. Ajith Kumar, 27, while in police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district last month, is yet another grim addition to the long and growing list of custodial deaths in India. In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered a CBI probe to ensure a transparent investigation, and the Madras High Court has directed the agency to complete its inquiry and submit a report by August 20.
Are the existing institutional mechanisms effective in preventing custodial violence? Here we discuss the question.

Indian embassy in contact with Irish authorities after Indian national attacked

The Embassy of India in Ireland has reached out to the Irish authorities and the civil society after an Indian citizen was viciously assaulted by right-wing gangs in Dublin over the weekend, Ambassador of India Akhilesh Mishra told The Hindu on Monday (July 21, 2025). 'The horrible attack has naturally caused widespread concern and fear in the local Indian community. Embassy is in touch with the victim, the larger community and has taken up the matter with various Irish authorities,' Ambassador Mishra said over the phone from Dublin informing that the male victim, an employee of Amazon, is receiving medical attention. The victim, in his forties, had arrived in Ireland only a week ago, sources told The Hindu, informing that the attacks against Indians and people of colour from other Asian and African countries are on the rise in Ireland. 'Ireland was not unsafe earlier, but over the past three years, the situation has dramatically changed because of the rise of violent racist gangs that target foreigners,' a diplomatic source said. Ireland has around one lakh Indians who are part of the high-income segment of the Irish economy. Ireland has traditionally been known for its tolerance and championing of justice globally. However, the recent spurt in racist attacks against foreigners has drawn attention from the expat Indian community, many of whom expressed shock online over the brutal attack on the Indian man during the weekend.

SC orders Rs 50 lakh compensation to J&K constable over custodial torture, directs CBI probe

NEW DELHI: In an important judgment reinforcing the constitutional safeguards against custodial torture, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to register an FIR over the "brutal and inhuman custodial torture" of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir and ordered the Union Territory administration to pay him Rs 50 lakh as compensation. "In order to provide some solace to the victim and his family for the barbaric acts of custodial torture leading to complete castration, we hereby direct the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir to pay compensation of Rs 50,00,000/- (Rupees Fifty Lakhs) to the appellant (victim), Khursheed Ahmed Chauhan. The said amount shall be recoverable from the officer(s) concerned, against whom departmental proceedings shall be initiated upon conclusion of the investigation by the CBI. The CBI shall submit its status report by November 10, 2025, to this court," said the apex court. "The injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, particularly the complete mutilation of his genitalia, the use of pepper/chilly powder, and electric shocks on his private parts, are grave reminders of the inhuman torture meted out to him. The cumulative effect of all these facts is deeply shocking to the conscience of this court," the two-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, observed.

Congress MP surrenders in 2007 case, gets bail

Ghaziabad: Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood on Monday surrendered before a special CBI court in connection with a case involving fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 40 lakh. He was allowed interim bail till the next date of hearing on July 25. The case relates to the withdrawal of Rs 40 lakh from the account of Saharanpur Nagar Palika Parishad in 2007, when Masood was the chairman. On July 12, special CBI court had issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of the MP after he failed to appear despite repeated summons and warrants. Executive officer of the civic body Yashwant Singh had lodged an FIR against Masood and his aide, accusing them of withdrawing money from the municipal council's bank account. Sources said the matter was later registered under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Special CBI judge Arwind Misra had issued the NBW directing police to arrest the accused by July 18. On Monday, the court sought an explanation from police for failure to arrest the MP. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida
