Perak launches Digital Economy Action Plan 2030, Smart City Blueprint 2040
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said both documents were formulated based on the Perak Sejahtera 2030 vision, aimed at making the state more efficient, sustainable and prosperous through digital empowerment and data-driven urban planning.
He said the Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 focuses on four main pillars: access to quality digital infrastructure, efficient digital public administration, a dynamic digital-driven business ecosystem, and an empowered digital society.
'A total of 21 programmes have been identified, with five catalytic projects prioritised. These include expanding digital coverage through the JENDELA initiative, developing Point-of-Presence (POP) infrastructure, and using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to improve connectivity in rural areas,' he said at the launch held at Hotel Casuarina here today.
Other key initiatives include strengthening cashless payment systems for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and establishing centres of excellence such as the Smart Perak Research and Innovation Centre (SPRIN) and AI Academy.
As for the Smart City Blueprint 2040, Saarani said it outlines seven core components, 22 policies, 52 strategies, and 132 phased initiatives to be implemented up to 2040, aimed at driving smart city development across the state.
'The blueprint aims to build cities that are more inclusive, responsive and sustainable, centred around the People-Centric Smart City concept which focuses on public needs and wellbeing,' he said.
He also thanked the four local authorities — Ipoh City Council (MBI), Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI), Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) and Kampar District Council (MDKpr) — for being early adopters of the smart city agenda.
To ensure effective and impactful implementation of both plans, the state has established the Perak Digital Economy Council (MEDi) and the Perak Smart City Steering Committee.
'MEDi comprises four strategic pillars - infrastructure, economy, public digitalisation, and society, with each led by the respective state executive councillor.
'The Smart City Steering Committee will follow a similar structure, as both initiatives are interconnected,' he added.

(MCMC pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia will be taking part in the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), as part of the government's ongoing effort to boost the country's communications technology ecosystem, the communications ministry said today. WSIS+20 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from July 7 to July 11. The ministry said Malaysia's participation in the event would bring about numerous strategic benefits, including global recognition of Malaysia's push for wider internet access in rural areas as well as efforts to boost information and communication technology literacy among the public. 'Malaysia will use WSIS to introduce government initiatives like the National Digital Network (Jendela) and the national information dissemination centre (Nadi),' a ministry statement said. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil will be leading the Malaysian delegation to WSIS+20, and will attend more than 10 meetings with his counterparts from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Somalia, Greece, Russia and Algeria. Fahmi will also be meeting Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union.

GENEVA: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is leading Malaysia's delegation at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20) in Geneva from July 7 to 11. The event serves as a key platform for global leaders to discuss ICT-driven sustainable development. Malaysia's participation aligns with the MADANI Government's commitment to fostering an inclusive digital ecosystem. The country aims to highlight its achievements in rural internet expansion, ICT literacy, and digital transformation through initiatives like the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) and National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI). The ministry stated, 'This participation brings various strategic benefits to the country, including global recognition of Malaysia's leadership in expanding rural internet access, communication technology inclusivity, and initiatives to empower ICT literacy among citizens in line with the well-being values of Malaysia MADANI.' WSIS+20, a United Nations-led forum, focuses on leveraging ICT for sustainable growth across 11 key areas, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, and capacity building. Since 2012, the WSIS Prizes have honoured 234 winning projects and 648 champions for impactful technological advancements. Fahmi is also set to engage in over 10 bilateral meetings with officials from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Poland, and others, alongside discussions with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. Govt to boost highway connectivity with 'Roads Must Have Internet' drive, says Fahmi
GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will collaborate with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to identify nearly 50km of road nationwide that currently have no telecommunications coverage. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this after visiting the YES Tanjung Asam 4G MOCN Tower during the "Where There's a Road, There's Internet" programme in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas here on Tuesday (July 1). "There are several key locations currently under discussion, and my hope is that these can be included in Phase Two of the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela), as many of these areas will likely require new tower construction,' said Fahmi Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz, who is also Penang Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker. Fahmi also announced that the Communications Ministry was aiming to implement a proof of concept for direct-to-cell technology via Low Earth Orbit satellites in several locations during the third or fourth quarter of this year. He said the initiative was delayed due to technical issues, but discussions are ongoing. "With this technology, satellites can act as cell towers from space. For instance, someone on the coastline would be able to contact authorities immediately in emergencies," he explained. "In places like islands where building 60-metre towers may not be feasible, direct-to-cell satellite technology can be a viable solution," he added. – Bernama
