Edinburgh Reporter16 hours ago

A 72-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to several non-recent sexual abuse offences at the High Court in Glasgow.
William Bain from Crieff offended over a 21-year-period between 1978 to 1999.
An investigation was launched in 2021 following evidence heard at the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry.
As part of the investigation, 11 victims were identified, aged between 11 and 14. The offences occurred at various locations including Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dumbarton.
In October 2022, Bain was arrested by officers.
Detective Sergeant Alan Macdougall said: 'Bain is a prolific sexual predator. He used his position of power to inflict pain and harm on his young victims. The scale of his offending is horrendous.
'I would like to commend those involved in the investigation for speaking to us. The impact of such crimes is deeply felt and long lasting and I understand how difficult it is to relive such horror.
'We remain committed to tackling all forms of sexual crimes, regardless of when they occurred. I would encourage anyone who has been a victim to come forward, knowing we will fully investigate and you will be supported by our specially trained officers and partner agencies.'

'My dog wants to see you today' Vile grooming messages from rapist who abused eight little girls

Gary MacPherson groomed and abused eight young girls and had his home kitted out with a pool, hot tub, cinema room, trampoline and various pets. A Scots rapist who lured, groomed and abused eight vulnerable young girls over 16 years has finally been jailed. Gary MacPherson's pattern of offending behaviour was laid out at the High Court in Paisley, where it was heard he attempted to gain his victims' trust with vile grooming messages and improvements to his house. Between 2005 and 2022, the 58-year-old committed the offences at various locations including at his former home in Paisley as well as Glasgow and Orlando. The youngest child was six-years-old when the abuse began, with police saying the majority of his victims were children at the start with his behaviour continuing into adulthood. MacPherson kitted his home out with things that children enjoy including a pool, hot tub, cinema room, trampoline and various pets, the court heard. One of the victims was lured in after he sent her messages and photos of his dog Bonnie on social media. One message said: "Bonnie asks if she can see you tomorrow." Several of the victims were told by MacPherson not to disclose the abuse as they would get him into trouble. The offending also included taking pictures of the girls without their consent and stalking behaviour. MacPherson, of Saltcoats, was found guilty of 22 charges, including rape, on May 22 following the trial. He was handed a 17-year extended sentence with 13 years in custody at the High Court in Paisley on June 30. His name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely. Non-harassment orders, banning MacPherson from contacting or attempting to contact seven of the victims, were also granted for an indefinite period. Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, said: 'Gary MacPherson inflicted unimageable trauma as he systematically moved from victim to victim. 'The evidence led by our specialist prosecutor demonstrated a clear pattern of grooming behaviour that allowed him to gain access to these children. 'It is thanks to them reporting their experiences that MacPherson will now face the consequences of his depraved actions while also protecting others from harm. 'This prosecution sends a clear message to those who commit this type of offending - you cannot hide from justice, and we will do everything within our power to ensure you are held accountable. 'I would urge anyone affected by sexual abuse to report it, regardless of how long ago it took place. You will be listened to and supported as we seek to protect communities in Scotland by prosecuting those responsible.' Detective Inspector Euan McMillan said: 'MacPherson is an abusive individual who subjected his victims to a prolonged period of abuse showing an utter disregard for the impact this would have on them. "We acknowledge how difficult it can be for victims of sexual abuse to come forward and I hope this outcome provides them with some sense of closure. 'I would also like to thank my team of officers whose perseverance and dedication has ensured MacPherson has been brought to justice. 'We continue to be committed to bringing all perpetrators of sexual abuse to justice. Time is no barrier to our enquiries. "I would urge anyone who wishes to report a sexual crime, regardless of when it happened, to contact us so we can conduct a thorough and professional investigation.' Glasgow's High Court heard it had a potential value of £750,000 as it could be mixed with caffeine to bulk out heroin deals. The shipment was addressed to Dunstance in Lochgilphead, Argyll, where he'd lived since being freed early from prison in 2022. He'd been caged for 11 years in 2015 for running a heroin trafficking operation from Spain. Cops seized £8million of the drug plus weapons in raids across Scotland. Defence lawyer John Scullion KC said the latest crime committed by Dunstance was 'a desperate attempt, at a lower level, to make money, which spectacularly backfired'. The package, addressed to him, was intercepted last September at Heathrow Airport. When cops raided his flat they found a blender, scales, clear bags and notes on 'legal highs' and 'commercial drones'. The case in 2015 heard how Dunstance's mob had been in the 'top 5%' of crime gangs in the country at that time. He was snared as part of the large-scale Operation Brora police probe. The INSIDE story of Scotland's biggest gangster - Jamie 'The Iceman' Stevenson Detectives had managed to hack into messages which showed how Dunstance was directing crew members from his home in Spain. He was later extradited from the Netherlands to face justice. David Hawthorne - one of his trusted lieutenants - was separately jailed for nine years in 2014 for his role in manning safe houses for drugs and firearms in Drumchapel, Glasgow. Dunstance was also an associate of Euan 'EJ' Johnston, gunned down in a gangland killing in the city in 2016.
