SPFL club hit with bombshell 15-point deduction just days after first game of new season

The club have released a statement on their punishment CLUB IN CRISIS SPFL club hit with bombshell 15-point deduction just days after first game of new season Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EDINBURGH CITY have been slapped with a 15-point deduction by the SPFL. The League Two outfit have been dealt the punishment in relation to SPFL rules on clubs 'suffering an insolvency event.' Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Edinburgh City's Meadowbank Stadium home Credit: Willie Vass 2 Michael McIndoe led Edinburgh City to a third-place finish last season The club have faced numerous off and on-field challenges in recent times. They reached League One in 2022 and finished sixth in their first season in the third tier. But the 2023/24 campaign would prove an immensely difficult one as the club dealt with a major financial crisis. They were hit with a six-point deduction during the season after failing to pay their players. A whole host of first team players then left the club leaving behind a squad of loanees and youngsters to see out the campaign. The club were relegated back to League Two where the challenges have continued. Edinburgh City's SPFL status was plunged into doubt with the club struggling to attain an SFA bronze licence, which they ultimately managed to do in June last year. Despite the continued issues and limited resources, boss MIchael McIndoe led the side to an unexpectedly successful campaign that saw the club reach the play-offs after finishing third. But just as the current campaign kicks into gear, they've been hit with another massive setback in the form of this fresh 15-point deduction. Record on Companies House show that the club appointed a provisional liquidator in a winding up order last month. That appointment was quickly terminated with documents showing the reason for the termination as 'payment of petitioning debt in full.' Under SPFL rules, the appointment of a liquidator automatically triggers a 15-point deduction. It's designated as an 'insolvency event.' The governing body's Rule E1 states: "Where a Club takes, suffers or is subject to a Deductible Insolvency Event that Club shall…be deducted 15 points and 5 points in the League in consecutive Seasons." The club quickly responded once the SPFL had made news of the deduction public. And they've announced they will instantly be kicking-off an appeal against the decision. They said: "Edinburgh City FC hereby acknowledges the penalty imposed upon it by the SPFL this morning. "The Club will begin its appeal process immediately. "No further comment will be made at this time." More to follow...
