The Liberal Party will launch a court challenge after losing the blue-ribbon seat of Bradfield at the May election to community independent Nicolette Boele.

On Monday, the Australian Financial Review first reported the Liberal Party would launch the court challenge, asking a judge in the court of disputed returns to recount some of the ballots.
'After careful consideration of the two different results of the counts in Bradfield, we have taken the decision to go to the umpire,' Ms Kapterian said in a statement on Monday.
'We are requesting a targeted final examination of a small number of 'line ball' ballots that were reserved and considered by the Australian Electoral Officer during the counts.'
Ms Kapterian said she was not questioning the integrity of the electoral system and believed the additional scrutiny would boost confidence in the system.

At the end of the recount conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission, Ms Boele had 50.01 per cent of the total vote, ahead of Ms Kapterian's 49.99 per cent.
The news comes just a week before parliament sits for the first time since the election, with Ms Boele expected to take her seat on the cross benches.

Gina Rinehart's right-hand woman Teena McQueen out the door at Hancock

Just last year, colourful Liberal Party identity Teena McQueen was at Mar-a-Lago celebrating Donald Trump's electoral triumph alongside her boss, Australia's richest person Gina Rinehart and Nigel 'Mr Brexit' Farage, the betting markets' pick for next British prime minister. McQueen, a regular talking head on Sky News' after-dark programming, joined the Hancock Prospecting payroll in 2022 as a group principal policy adviser to the executive team, and has, since acted as a kind of Robin to Rinehart's Batman, travelling with the boss to Florida last year and hanging out at Trump's estate for the long victory celebrations. But no more. CBD hears McQueen is out of her role at the Hancock Prospecting family. Rinehart's normally helpful team issued a swift 'no comment' in response to our queries. But McQueen told us she would be taking some time off for family issues. 'She's still a very good friend and wonderful person,' she said of her billionaire pal. Loading McQueen, a former federal Liberal vice-president, was at the time of her hiring by Rinehart subject to a gag order by the party following a train wreck appearance on Q&A. MCQueen has managed to outlive the ABC program which was euthanised a few months ago, and has recently made a name for herself through some fairly full-blooded interventions in WhatsApp groups. When broadcaster Alan Jones was charged with indecent assault offences last year (which he denies and is contesting), McQueen sprung to action, telling a Liberal group chat the whole thing was 'absolute bullshit'. More recently, she told another group chat a petition calling for gender quotas in the Liberal Party was 'disgraceful'. Although as this column reported, someone calling themselves 'Teena McQueen' – in jest – did sign that very same petition.

Tony, Peta and the gang gather for solidarity supper at Israeli restaurant

A crack squad of political operatives were spotted at newsworthy Miznon restaurant on Tuesday night. The gang consisted of ex-prime minister Tony Abbott, former Labor MP Michael Danby, Abbott's former chief of staff and Sky News host Peta Credlin, ex-Liberal Party federal director and Credlin husbo Brian Loughnane and former Victorian Liberal president and man about Melbourne Michael Kroger. The diners were seated upstairs at a big table near the balcony, which is pretty much top desk. The Israeli restaurant has been at the centre of a new storm in recent weeks. As this newspaper has reported, the Hardware Lane venue is part-owned by Shahar Segal, who until recently was spokesman for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The foundation, an Israel and US-backed aid distributor in Gaza, has been widely criticised after hundreds of Gazans have died while trying to collect food. On July 4 the restaurant was stormed by activists who turned over tables, scuffled with staff and caused alarmed diners to flee. This led to four arrests and widespread condemnation, not least as it happened on the same night as an arson attack on a synagogue and cars being torched at a company that forms part of the supply chain for Israeli fighter jets. Loading Since that night, it appears bookings for Miznon have swelled. 'The restaurant was buzzing, it's full,' one source told us. Danby, who's spent much time lately whacking Labor over its treatment of Israel, organised the shindig as a show of solidarity with the restaurant. At one point he proposed a toast, while the conversation – no prizes for guessing here – ranged from Israel to the Middle East and the Orange One.

Mark Latham's NSW Parliament office used to record sex tapes: sources

When asked, Latham did not dispute the claims or deny the existence of such videos. 'You're asking me to dispute something I haven't seen,' Latham said in a text. 'Is this really today's journalism? Grow up. You're obviously a clown.' Loading The former One Nation MP posted on X that it was a 'regular request' by 'sick puppies'. Matthews' lawyer declined to comment as the matter was before the courts. The couple's relationship ended on May 27, the day Latham was involved in a vote to decide the future of Rosehill Gardens racecourse. On radio, Latham referred to the break-up as 'that horrendous night' and said he had no contact with her since, other than returning some possessions and the pair retaining a small part-ownership of a trotting horse. Matthews, a Liberal Party member and former OnlyFans creator who according to LinkedIn runs an e-commerce global logistics firm, claims Latham pressured her into depraved acts and drove his car at her, with his side mirror hitting her and 'causing a bruise'. '[Latham's alleged acts] including defecating on me before sex and refusing to let me wash, forcing degrading sexual acts, pressuring me to engage in sexual acts with others, demanding I call him 'master', telling me I was his property, and repeatedly telling me that my only value to him was for sex to demean and control me,' her court document reads. This masthead does not suggest that the claims against Latham are true, only that they have been made. Speaking on Sydney's 2SM on Wednesday, Latham also addressed explicit messages between the couple published in the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, which were sent while the former One Nation MP was sitting in the parliamentary chamber. Latham claimed they were 'edited' and lacked context. 'Sitting there listening to Penny Sharpe droning on, and then a woman who looks like Nathalie Matthews sends you a message. Which one would you pay attention to?' Latham said. Latham told 2SM that his record as an MP 'matches up against anyone in the upper house'. Latham described the leaked messages as part of 'some personal or political campaign to try and damage me'. Premier Chris Minns said he 'hopes the truth comes out' in court about Latham. When asked if it was appropriate for members of parliament to be sending lewd texts during a session at parliament, Minns said it was a 'pretty basic expectation' that members be focused on their constituents when at work. Loading 'These are serious allegations, if they are to be tested in court or some other judiciary that should take place. I think it's important that the public knows I'm focused on them, and I hope this is investigated and that the truth comes out.' Acting Opposition Leader Damien Tudehope defended working with Latham to devise amendments to key pieces of legislation, saying the MP's actions do not undermine his good ideas. 'Now I might not agree with what Mark Latham is alleged to have done or what he has admitted to have done, but that does not mean that I am precluded, or anyone is precluded, from assessing a policy position in terms of its objective merit,' Tudehope said. 'The opposition will continue to deal with anyone who puts forward policy proposals, and it doesn't matter who they are.' When parliament resumes in August, Sharpe, Labor's leader in the upper house, will move to refer Latham to the privileges committee after he used parliamentary privilege to share private information from a psychologist's report about rival MP Alex Greenwich. Matthews had approached NSW Police seeking an AVO against Latham weeks ago, but investigators declined to pursue it on her behalf. She is pursuing the matter as a private AVO. The businesswoman has also taken an AVO out against her former husband, Ross Matthews. The pair separated this year, and Ross Matthews is facing criminal charges over allegations he called her 200 times between April and June this year. Court documents allege he used a 'raised voice' and was 'speaking aggressively over the phone'. '[It] left her feeling shaken and scared,' documents claim. Loading During that time, Ross Matthews had taken civil action against Matthews in the NSW Supreme Court in March before the matter concluded in late May. Ross Matthews, on X, pinned a post saying 'I do not talk to Nathalie and I do not care' while requesting a halt to messages. The AVO hearing between Matthews and Ross will take place in Sydney's Downing Centre Court in late July, one week before the hearing against Latham. Matthews enlisted NSW Liberal Party vice president and Hawkesbury Council Deputy Mayor Sarah McMahon to act as her lawyer in the case against Latham.
