US Consul General Lahore Kristin K Hawkins has said that Pakistan and the United States share a longstanding and enduring relationship, with cooperation expanding across sectors including agriculture, trade, education and cultural preservation.
In an exclusive interview with Express News, Hawkins stated that agricultural experts from both countries are working jointly to tackle farming challenges faced in South Punjab and the US. She added that bilateral programmes in areas such as trade and agriculture can further strengthen mutual support.
'Our focus is to provide modern educational opportunities to Pakistan's youth,' Hawkins said. She highlighted the success of the English Access Micro-scholarship Program, launched in 2004, which has benefitted more than 27,000 Pakistani students, including 6,000 from Punjab.

'These students are contributing to a safer and more prosperous future for both nations,' she said. Over the last two years, the programme has expanded, reaching over 1,000 new students in Punjab, with 400 students from cities across South Punjab.
Responding to a question on cultural initiatives, Hawkins said the US has supported nearly 35 cultural preservation projects in Pakistan under the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). Notable efforts include the conservation of historical landmarks such as Multan's Ghanta Ghar and local shrines.
She also mentioned the establishment of 19 Lincoln Corners across Pakistan to provide students with access to modern technology, including 3D printing, digital libraries, and research journals, offering access to more than 40,000 scholarly articles.

These centres also provide guidance on higher education opportunities in the US, while promoting technology and cultural exchange.
'In South Punjab, Lincoln Corners have been set up at Bahauddin Zakariya University in Multan and the University of Education in Vehari,' she said.
Hawkins reiterated the US' commitment to fostering educational and cultural cooperation, particularly for youth empowerment in underserved regions.

Govt clears Quetta flights for Shia pilgrims

The federal government has authorised direct flights from Quetta to facilitate pilgrims travelling to Iran and Iraq for Arbaeen, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif announced in the National Assembly on Tuesday. During the session — chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq — the house unanimously passed two resolutions marking Youm-e-Istehsal, condemning atrocities in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, opposition members continued their protest over the conviction of senior party leaders in May 9 cases. Some federal ministers responded by mocking the PTI-led protest movement, while the law minister reiterated the government's offer for dialogue. In a policy statement, Defence Minister Asif highlighted the security threats faced by pilgrims along the 800-kilometre overland route from Quetta—particularly the risk of terrorist attacks in Balochistan. "To mitigate these risks, the federal government has authorised direct flights from Quetta for Arbaeen pilgrims," he said, adding that one flight had already commenced, with additional daily services planned to meet demand. Asif said all licensed private airlines had been invited to operate on the route, and permission was also granted for chartered flights to maximise capacity. He noted that Iran had approved an additional flight for Pakistani pilgrims following discussions during the Iranian president's recent visit. "The government is committed to ensuring safe, comfortable, and timely transportation for all Arbaeen pilgrims," the minister added. Resolution on Kashmir The house unanimously adopted two resolutions, condemning India's actions in IIOJK on Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir, marking the sixth anniversary of India's revocation of Articles 370 and 35A. The resolutions were moved by Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Shazia Marri and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's Amir Muqam. However, the proceedings were marred by opposition protests, which accused the government of stifling dissent. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry criticised the PTI's protest, stating, "Today is for Kashmir, but you are observing Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Imran." He accused PTI of exploiting the session for political gains, prompting opposition uproar. PTI protest PTI's Aamir Dogar accused the government of "political victimisation," claiming that 10 National Assembly members were "picked up" but the speaker did not take any action. Demanding justice, he said that the PTI founder was in jail for refusing to budge. Speaker Sadiq countered, saying that he had issued the production orders. The speaker also apprised the house of PTI MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram's unexplained absence for 40 days, saying that under Article 64 his seat could be declared vacant. PML-N's Nosheen Iftikhar moved a motion to declare Akram's seat vacant, however, Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah stressed the need for seeing whether the motion followed the rules.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: FO rejects claims of Pakistanis' involvement

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office (FO) rejected the claims of Pakistani nationals being involved in Russia-Ukraine conflict, terming it baseless and unfounded allegations. 'The Government of Pakistan categorically rejects the baseless and unfounded allegations of the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the conflict in Ukraine. To date, Pakistan has not been formally approached by the Ukrainian authorities, nor has any verifiable evidence been presented to substantiate such claims,' FO Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said in a statement issued here on Tuesday. The Government of Pakistan shall take up this matter with the Ukrainian authorities, and seek clarification in this regard, he added. 'Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter,' the spokesperson remarked. It is worth mentioning here that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had claimed on Monday that his warriors were fighting foreign 'mercenaries' from various nationalities including China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and parts of Africa. During 2023, foreign media also reported that Pakistan had allegedly sold $364 million worth of arms to Ukraine through third party US-backed private companies, which were categorically denied by Pakistan.
