How many passengers travelled in general coaches in last 5 financial years? Indian Railways data reveals
According to a report, the percentage of non-AC coaches has increased to about 70%. Out of the total 82,200 coaches, 57,200 are non-AC, while the remaining 25,000 are AC coaches.
During the last financial year 2024-25 alone, 1250 general coaches have been augmented in various long-distance trains. But have you ever wondered how many passengers actually travel in general coaches despite this huge demand? The latest numbers might just surprise you.
During the ongoing Monsoon Session, Lok Sabha MPs S Jothimani and Sachithanantham R asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to provide details on the number of passengers who travelled in unreserved coaches over the last five financial years, ending on March 31, 2025.
Responding to this, Vaishnaw said that 2187 crore passengers have travelled by general or unreserved coaches in the last five financial years (i.e. FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25).

The Union Minister also stated that to cater to the needs of passengers desirous of availing unreserved accommodation, 'Indian Railways (IR) operate unreserved non-AC passenger trains/ MEMU / EMU etc. for affordable travel, which are in addition to the unreserved accommodation (coaches) available in Mail/Express services.'
The newly introduced Amrit Bharat Express train, a fully non-AC modern train, comprise 8 Sleeper Class coaches and 11 General Class coaches.
Indian Railways is executing a special manufacturing programme for 17,000 non-AC general/sleeper coaches over the next five years.

Vande Bharat Has The Highest Fares, But This Train Is India's Biggest Moneymaker
Last Updated: The Bengaluru Rajdhani tops Indian Railways' earnings, outpacing the popular Vande Bharat Express, despite the latter's high fares and widespread popularity When it comes to notable trains under Indian Railways, the Vande Bharat Express is often the first to come to mind. Known for its speed, comfort, and modern facilities, it has gained immense popularity among passengers. This popularity, however, comes at a price; Vande Bharat fares are approximately 33% higher than those of premium trains such as the Shatabdi and Rajdhani. Despite the steep ticket prices, the Vande Bharat Express is proving to be a financially beneficial venture for Indian Railways. There are currently 114 Vande Bharat trains in service across the country, with the exception of the northeastern states. Many of these routes boast occupancy rates exceeding 100%, reflecting strong demand. Bengaluru Rajdhani Leads In Earnings While Vande Bharat might appear to be the top revenue generator, this is not entirely accurate. In fact, the Bengaluru Rajdhani Express holds the title of the highest-earning train for Indian Railways. This train, number 22692, which operates between Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) and Bengaluru, Karnataka, is a major money-spinner. It carries over 5.09 lakh passengers annually and has generated a staggering Rs 176 crore in revenue. Interestingly, it does not depart from New Delhi or Old Delhi stations, but rather from Nizamuddin station. Although the Delhi – Mumbai and Delhi – Howrah routes are known for being among the busiest in the country, they do not feature among the top three in terms of revenue. The second position on the earnings chart is held by the Sealdah Rajdhani Express (train number 12314), which runs between New Delhi and Sealdah (Kolkata). It records 509,164 passengers per year, generating Rs 128.8 crore in revenue. Following closely is the New Delhi – Dibrugarh Rajdhani, earning Rs 126.3 crore annually, making it the third-highest revenue-generating train for Indian Railways. These measures include initiatives undertaken under the Ease of Doing Business programme, comprising the Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP), Business-Ready assessment, Jan Vishwas, and Reducing Compliance Burden on Businesses and Citizens, said Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. As per the latest available Provisional Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, GDP at constant prices is estimated to have grown by 6.5 per cent in 2024-25.
