AP prioritises women's safety with technology, says Home Minister
Andhra Pradesh's Home Minister, Vangalapudi Anitha, has reaffirmed the coalition government's commitment to women's safety, highlighting the introduction of the Shakti app as a vital tool for their protection. During the Suraksha 360 programme held on Saturday under the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate, Anitha encouraged women to leverage mobile technology as a means of self-defense, echoing Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's assertion that "if we have a mobile in our hands, the whole world is in our hands."
Anitha explained that women in potential danger can alert police instantly by sending a single message to a designated WhatsApp number. She noted that the implementation of CCTV cameras has resulted in a marked decline in crime rates across the state, commending the NTR District Commissionerate for its adept use of technology in policing. The minister revealed that incidents of crime and traffic disruptions are swiftly addressed using advanced technological resources.
She advocated for the expansion of model police stations throughout the NTR district, calling attention to the positive impact of the Suraksha app and device on public welfare. Addressing concerns over rising online fraud in the state, Anitha advised citizens to ignore messages from unknown senders, stating that the police are actively employing technology to combat such scams.
The minister emphasised the significance of enhanced security measures, particularly in light of the presence of numerous VIPs and VVIPs in Andhra Pradesh. Utilizing drones and CCTV cameras, the police are committed to preventing anti-social activities and ensuring the safety of the community through both smart and discreet policing strategies.

Cyber fraud: Multi-state hunt on for scammers who duped Panchkula mayor of ₹42L
The district cybercrime police have launched a multi-state operation to apprehend the perpetrators behind sophisticated cyber fraud amounting to ₹ 42.52 lakh, targeting city mayor Kulbhushan Goyal. Teams have been dispatched to states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, etc. following fraudulent transactions. The case was registered under various sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(3), 338, 340, and 61 of the BNS. (HT photo for representation) According to police sources, the initial transfers of the illicit funds were traced to accounts in Kolkata (West Bengal) and Sewarhi, Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. These accounts were opened in Jana Small Finance Bank and HDFC Bank. Police suspect these may be 'mule accounts' used by the fraudsters, indicating a complex money trail that the cyber police are now diligently tracking with the assistance of bank officials and other government agencies to identify the actual scammers. Further inquiries with Punjab and Sind Bank, from where the funds were debited, have been initiated to obtain transaction details. The role of bank officials was also scrutinised but they were found to not be involved in the fraud, said a cop. Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal, 64, a resident of Sector 6, lodged the complaint on the cyber portal on June 26. In his complaint, Goyal, who is a director of Amarnath Aggarwal Investment Private Limited with an office in Sector 2, stated that he received a call from his son from Spain on June 26. His son informed him about two suspicious transactions totalling ₹ 42.52 lakh ( ₹ 22,56,000 and ₹ 19,96,000) from the company's account at the Punjab and Sind Bank's Sector 17 branch. He had received debit alerts for these transactions and inquired if his father had authorised them. The mayor denied any such payment. Upon investigation, Goyal contacted his company's accountant, Birbhan Garg, who confirmed that no such payments were made by the company, despite the funds being debited. The accountant was subsequently asked to visit the bank, and a cyber complaint was filed. It was later discovered that ₹ 22,56,000 was transferred to an individual named Deepak Kumar and ₹ 19,96,000 to an individual named Okender from the company's account. Further investigation revealed that the fraudsters had created a forged letterhead of Goyal's company and sent a fake WhatsApp message to the mobile number of the bank manager, instructing him to deposit the specified amounts into two account numbers provided to him. The case was registered on June 27 at the cybercrime police station under various sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(3), 338, 340, and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

4 days after Kolkata rape, cops seize hockey stick, clothing of suspects; collect DNA
KOLKATA: The hockey stick with which ex-Trinamool Chhatra Parishad union president Manojit Mishra inflicted a head injury on the 24-year-old Kolkata law student he and two others allegedly gang-raped on campus last Wednesday now sits inside an evidence bag at Lalbazar, the city police headquarters. So do the red kurta, light brown six-pocket trousers and black shorts the prime suspect was purportedly wearing during the crime. In four days since the assault, Kolkata Police's special investigation team has moved with urgency and meticulousness that contrast with its contentious handling of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case last Aug. Police said Sunday they had collected DNA samples from all three suspects and seized items of clothing from their homes in Kalighat, Tiljala and Howrah, reports Tamaghna Banerjee. From the guard room floor where the crime occurred, forensic teams have retrieved hair strands, said to be evidence of how the survivor fought back before giving up. "I just lay like a dead body," she wrote in her complaint. CCTV caught her being dragged back to room Police said Sunday they had collected DNA samples from all three suspects and seized items of clothing from their homes in Kalighat, Tiljala and Howrah. From the guard room floor where the crime occurred, forensic teams have retrieved hair strands, said to be evidence of how the survivor fought back before giving up. 'I just lay like a dead body,' she wrote in her complaint. The real smoking gun? Mishra's cellphone. Co-suspects Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee – both law students – allegedly filmed the assault on Mishra's orders, making sure to capture the survivor's face clearly in the frame. Those videos, sent for verification to the cyber forensics lab in Kolkata's Salt Lake, tell a story that contradicts Mishra's claims of 'consensual sex' with the woman whose refusal to accept his marriage proposal allegedly triggered the assault. CCTV footage backs the survivor's version of what happened between 7.30pm and 10.50pm Wednesday. Cameras captured her bolting for the main gate, only to be dragged back to the guard room. They also caught the colour of Mishra's kurta, later matched to the one seized from his Kalighat home. Based on the footage, investigators have calculated that 25 students were on campus that day, and seven were in the union room just before the assault. Police have asked authorities of the south Kolkata law college to provide their names, phone numbers and addresses. Mishra's phone also revealed more than just Wednesday's horror. Sources said investigators found what his circle already knew — a cache of doctored photos of female students, their faces superimposed on pornographic images and shared on WhatsApp groups. The nine-member SIT led by an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner spent Sunday at Pramit's Howrah home, combing through his computer for more videos. Neighbours protested, but the team – bolstered by the addition of four sub-inspectors, one of them a woman officer – stayed put for two hours. What they found there is still to be disclosed. Sources said a relative of the survivor's family told police that they were satisfied with the probe for now and are expecting a speedy trial.

Chandigarh: Three more arrested in Rs 2.5-crore cyber fraud case
In the ongoing investigation of a Rs 2.5 crore high-profile cyber fraud case involving a fake 'digital arrest' operation, the Cyber Crime Police Station, Chandigarh, has arrested three more accused, taking the total number of arrests to 11. The accused have been identified as Anurag alias Vikrant (23), Abhijeet (24), and Prashant Kumar (20). All are residents of Uttar Pradesh, who have been allegedly involved in the cyber scam. Police have recovered three mobile phones with active SIMs and a set of forged KYC documents from the accused. The case was registered on June 1, 2025, on a complaint filed by Sumit Kaur, a resident of Sector 10-A, Chandigarh. Kaur fell victim to an elaborate cyber fraud on May 3, 2025, after receiving a call falsely claiming to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The fraudsters accused her of SIM misuse linked to a money laundering case involving the CEO of Jet Airways. She was then coerced via WhatsApp video calls by imposters posing as senior officials, including a fake DIG CBI, and as Supreme Court judges. Under extreme psychological pressure, the victim was made to take an oath of secrecy and was tricked into transferring her life savings — approximately Rs 2.5 crore — into multiple fraudulently operated accounts under the guise of fund verification. Accused Prashant Kumar was first arrested from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, and revealed he had helped open a fraudulent bank account using someone else's KYC documents, for which he received Rs 54,000. His confession led the police to the arrests of Abhijeet and Anurag, alias Vikrant, from UP on June 27. They admitted to operating fake accounts for a 15 per cent commission and were found in possession of mobile phones and fake KYC documents. Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining members of the cyber fraud syndicate and to recover the defrauded amount, said the police.
