Deputy Comms Minister holds bilateral talks with Asean ministers in Brunei
Teo's meeting with Cambodia's Information Minister Neth Pheaktra, which lasted about 40 minutes, saw both countries exchanging experiences in curbing fake news, cyberbullying, misinformation and disinformation on social media as well as ethical use of Artificial Intelligence at the national level.
Both leaders also spoke at length on the importance of regulating social media, including mechanisms such as licensing and codes of conduct, as well as forging deeper cooperation between both ministries, particularly in the exchange of news, media practices, and communication technologies.
They jointly acknowledged that combating false information can be effectively addressed through content moderation and self-regulation, in collaboration with online platforms to update guidelines and standardise policies.
The two leaders also voiced their concern about how social media is being used for scam activities and widespread misinformation, as it causes harmful effects on people.
During the meeting, Teo noted that Malaysia is currently implementing social media licensing under a new regulatory framework, among others to ensure safer digital platforms by enhancing online safety, safeguard users and improve regulatory oversight of social media and internet messaging platforms.
Meanwhile, Brunei's Minister at Prime Minister's Office Halbi Mohd Yussof voiced his support for enhanced regional cooperation in tackling digital challenges.
He also expressed hope for stronger collaboration and joint initiatives between Brunei and Malaysia, reinforcing the region's collective efforts to build a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem.
Both bilateral meetings were also attended by the Information Department Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief corporate and international officer Syahrilazli Mahammad.
Also in the meeting were MCMC director II (Asean and Bilateral) Fatin Nabiha Ab Aziz, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) executive editor for International News Service Mohd Shukri Ishak, as well as other high-ranking officials from the Communications Ministry and its agencies.
Cambodia and Brunei are among the Asean member countries participating in the 17th AMRI which concluded Wednesday. Teo is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with China's representative on Thursday (May 8). — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has fixed Sept 10 to deliver its decision on Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's appeal to recuse a High Court judge who presided over her corruption trial involving the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project in Sarawak. Court of Appeal deputy registrar Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli set the date during the case management today. Rosmah's lawyer, Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, confirmed the date when contacted by Bernama. The wife of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is appealing against the decision by the then High Court judge, Mohamed Zaini Mazlan, who has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal, dismissing her application for his recusal from presiding over her case. Rosmah filed the recusal application at the eleventh hour before Judge Mohamed Zaini was slated to deliver his decision on Sept 1, 2022. The application was based on allegations that a draft judgment in her case, purportedly prepared by a third party, had been leaked before its official delivery. On the same day, Judge Mohamed Zaini found Rosmah, 73, guilty of three corruption charges linked to the hybrid solar project, and sentenced her to 10 years in prison and a RM970 million fine, in default 30 years in prison. However, she was granted a stay of execution on both the custodial sentence and the fine, pending the disposal of her appeal before the Court of Appeal. Rosmah was charged with one count of soliciting RM187.5 million and two counts of receiving RM6.5 million in bribes from former Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director, Saidi Abang Samsudin. — Bernama

Indonesia's Foreign Minister to attend ASEAN meetings in Kuala Lumpur
INDONESIA'S Foreign Minister Sugiono (picture) will join his ASEAN counterparts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, next week for the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and a series of related engagements from July 8 to 11. Indonesia's Foreign Ministry Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation, Siddharto Suryodhipuro, said Sugiono would participate in various sessions including regional dialogues and bilateral meetings with ASEAN's key partners. 'The AMM is an opportunity for Southeast Asia to address regional and global developments. Given the current dynamics in international politics, the ministers will discuss a range of issues, including those affecting Southeast Asia and global situations impacting the region,' he told a press briefing here on Thursday. Siddharto said Sugiono is also scheduled to co-chair the ASEAN-Australia meeting alongside his Australian counterpart, as Indonesia currently serves as ASEAN's coordinator for relations with Australia. Malaysia currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship for 2025. It marks the country's fifth time at the helm of the regional grouping since its previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. ASEAN currently comprises 10 member states namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Siddharto said that Sugiono is also expected to attend the Conference on Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD), which Malaysia is also hosting.
