Arkansas nips No. 25 Mississippi State on late free throw

Reuters08-03-2025
March 8 - D.J. Wagner scored 24 points and Jonas Aidoo racked up a season-high 21 -- including the deciding free throw with 11 seconds left -- as Arkansas outlasted No. 25 Mississippi State 93-92 on Saturday afternoon in both teams' regular-season Southeastern Conference finale in Fayetteville, Ark.
Both the Razorbacks (19-12, 8-10 SEC) and the Bulldogs (20-11, 8-10) are expected to earn at-large berths in the NCAA Tournament but could improve their seeding with a successful run through the SEC tournament next week in Nashville, Tenn.
Arkansas led by just a point after a first half that featured four ties and 10 lead changes and pulled away with a 10-0 run to begin the second half. The Razorbacks pushed their advantage to 16 before Mississippi State rallied, regaining the lead at 84-83 on Riley Kugel's 3-pointer with 3:14 left.
A pair of free throws by Arkansas' Johnell Davis with 1:23 remaining tied the game at 89. Wagner and the Bulldogs' Josh Hubbard traded 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, with Hubbard's shot with 33.7 seconds left knotting the game at 92.
Aidoo converted one of two free throws with 11 seconds to play, giving Arkansas the lead but also leaving open the door for the Bulldogs. Kugel had a layup blocked by Billy Richmond III and R.J. Melendez missed a putback attempt at the buzzer to allow the Razorbacks to escape with the victory.
Aidoo also had 10 rebounds while Davis scored 15 points, Trevon Brazile added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Richmond finished with 10 points and two blocked shots for Arkansas, which has won two straight and four of its past five.
Claudell Harris Jr. led Mississippi State with 18 points, with Hubbard adding 17, KeShawn Murphy and Cameron Matthews scoring 13 apiece, Kugel hitting for 12 and Melendez tallying 10. The Bulldogs have lost two straight and four of their last five.
The Razorbacks led by four after two free throws by Aidoo with one minute left before halftime but needed two more from the charity stripe by Wagner to earn a 45-44 advantage at the break.
Hubbard led all scorers with 12 points before halftime while Aidoo and Wagner paced Arkansas with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cleveland Browns' Martin Emerson Jr. goes down with potential season-ending injury

Cleveland Browns starting cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. suffered a significant Achilles injury at training camp in Berea, Ohio on Tuesday and could miss the upcoming season. The 24-year-old Mississippi State product was in coverage during 7-on-7 drills when he suddenly dropped to the ground in obvious pain, according to multiple reports. Onlookers could hear him scream before being carted off the field. He will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury, which the team fears is a rupture that would end his 2025 campaign. Emerson had just shared his hopes for the upcoming season with reporters after failing to build on his breakout 2023 performance in 2024. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Emerson said he was hampered by some injuries, which he neglected to specify. 'As the year went along, my body was just kind of on a downward spiral,' he said. 'Just had to do some soul searching, man. Pray, stay close to God and just work my tail off. 'Honestly, that´s the only thing that could kind of get me out of that slump, was the work. Put in the work and just come back and be ready.' He even added six pounds of muscle to help his body prepare for the season. The timing of the injury is potentially devastating for Emerson, who is on his rookie contract and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026. He has $4.5 million in career earnings over three NFL seasons. The Browns will likely promote nickelback Greg Newsome II opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward with the first-team defense. Cameron Mitchell and Chigozie Anusiem could also be in line for more action without Emerson. Cleveland's defense is already preparing to be without linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who suffered a neck injury and has already been ruled out for 2025. Owusu-Koramoah is considered one of the better coverage linebackers in football. The Browns' defense has flown mostly under the radar this offseason as the team looks to find its quarterback. The team entered camp with veteran Joe Flacco, former Philadelphia Eagles backup Kenny Pickett, rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel and Deion Sanders' son, Shedeur, a rookie fifth-round pick out of Colorado. Flacco and Pickett have split first-team reps while Gabriel and Sanders have divided the backup duties in camp. Meanwhile, rookie running back Quinshon Judkins remains away from camp following his arrest on a domestic violence charge earlier this month. The second-round pick was looking at potentially starting after the departure of Nick Chubb.

Kansas coach Bill Self hospitalized, has 2 stents inserted

July 25 - Bill Self, the winningest men's basketball coach in Kansas Jayhawks history, was admitted to the hospital and had two stents inserted on Thursday, the university announced. The 62-year-old Self, who has guided the Jayhawks since 2003, led the team in its final summer practice on Thursday morning. According to Kansas officials, he was then escorted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after he "felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms." Per the university, the procedure to insert two stents "went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. "He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon." Self's health has caused concern in the past. He missed the Big 12 conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament in March 2023 due to a heart condition. He underwent a standard heart catheterization after experiencing chest tightness. Self also had two stents placed to treat blocked arteries. Self has won two national championships while at the Kansas helm, amassing a 609-156 record over 22 seasons with the program. Under Self, the Jayhawks have won 16 regular-season conference titles and eight conference tournament championships. --Field Level Media

TV star sends The Open fans ducking for cover after firing wayward shot into the stands

The Open got off to an entertaining start as golf analyst Johnson Wagner forced fans to dodge his wayward shot at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland on Thursday The Open Championship witnessed some early chaos as golf analyst Johnson Wagner had fans scrambling to avoid his shot. The prestigious major teed off at Royal Portrush on Thursday. ‌ Reigning champion Xander Schauffele is set to defend his crown in Northern Ireland. However, he will want to steer clear of emulating Wagner's mishap on the 16th, which was aired on the Golf Channel. ‌ The 45-year-old aimed to provide viewers with on-course insight ahead of The Open after watching several top stars during their practice rounds on Wednesday. Although Wagner, who is an NBC analyst and pro golfer, was left somewhat embarrassed after launching a ball into the crowd during a TV broadcast. ‌ While tackling a slope, Wagner shared what he had noticed on the course: "I saw Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, all three hit shots that landed in this area, just short of this little flat ridge," he said on the Golf Channel. "This is not bad, you can see the green, you can see the flag, but we've seen balls come here and hit right here and they don't stop. "Oh gosh, this is steep and you can't see anything. Tony Finau's was another 10 yards down. You can't see anything. It's steep. Both guys that played it couldn't get their depth perception, couldn't pick a good target and both were about 10, 15 paces right of the hole. I mean, just such a severe upslope, all you're trying to do here is get it on the green." Regrettably for Wagner, his shot didn't go as planned. Instantly recognising his error, the crowd shouted as the ball headed their way. ‌ "Oh god! I think I hit it in the grandstand," Wagner said. "Is everybody OK?" He raised his hand in apology and both Wagner and the camera crew began to laugh as the embarrassment set in. "Well, of all the shots I've hit in my days, I think that one is probably the most embarrassing," Wagner admitted. "I finally had a crowd and I skulled it into the grandstand. I'm so sorry." ‌ Despite the mishap, the analyst managed to maintain his composure enough to show viewers where players would ideally want their ball to land. However, Wagner's thoughts quickly returned to the crowd as he concluded his on-camera segment. "I've got to go apologise to the crowd. I'm kind of speechless," Wagner admitted. Addressing the spectators, a remorseful Wagner said: "So sorry. Who did it come close to? Do you have it? Alright, good. I am so sorry. I was over it and I was like, 'Please don't skull this into the grandstand...'" Back in the studio, Wagner's colleagues were seen laughing at his misfortune. "That thing came out like a driver, like a bullet," Paul McGinley joked. Record crowds are expected at Portrush as The Open returns to the course for the first time since 2019. Ireland's Shane Lowry clinched the title that year, which remains his only major victory. Rory McIlroy is among the favourites to win the major this time around. The 36-year-old finally won the Masters in April to complete a career Grand Slam and ended up T2 at the Scottish Open last week.
