Flawless Scottie Scheffler leads at The Open but Rory McIlroy threat remains

BreakingNews.ie2 days ago
Relentless Scottie Scheffler kept his head as others around him were losing theirs, but while his main rivals fell away, the spectre of Rory McIlroy loomed in the distance.
However, the Northern Irishman's six-shot deficit may be too far back even for someone who completed the career Grand Slam at the Masters earlier this year, considering the quality of his quarry.

McIlroy's description of Scheffler as 'inevitable' summed up the situation perfectly, as while the American was not as spectacular as he was on Friday in assuming the lead, his progress to a 67 and a four-shot advantage was serene.
Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day one behind, briefly drew level after an eagle at the second but he was never able to edge himself in front, and every time he slipped up he was punished by his playing partner, either by moving another shot away or saving an unlikely par.
McIlroy, six groups ahead, rode the wave of home support hyped by three birdies in his first four holes, and while his momentum stalled it was reignited by a monster 56-foot eagle putt – his longest of the week – at the 12th which produced the loudest roar of the tournament.
It was important as he had bogeyed the previous hole in a bizarre incident when his shot from the rough dislodged a previously buried ball.

But it was a stroke of good luck at the 15th which brought his final birdie of the day as, coming out hot from the rough, it bounced against the flagstick and dropped four feet from the hole.

McIlroy mania reached its peak at the 17th. With his burnt orange shirt appearing red on television screens, the sight of him marching out of the packed gallery surrounded by thousands of fans was reminiscent of Tiger Woods.
The crowd were so ramped they went wild as he pitched 33 feet past the hole, offering little chance of birdie, but they believed – as they will continue to do on Sunday.
The Masters champion, however, is a little more realistic.

'Scottie Scheffler, he is inevitable. Even when he doesn't have his best stuff he has become a compete player,' said McIlroy.
'It's going to be tough to catch him tomorrow if he keeps playing the way he does, but if I can get out tomorrow with a similar start to today and get the crowd going, hopefully he feels that behind me – and you never know.'

Scheffler looks unshakeable, though. Already with a three-shot lead, he birdied the difficult Calamity Corner 16th for the third successive day and the gap was looking as big as the chasm in front of the par three.
China's ultra-consistent Haotong Li is his closest challenger, with Fitzpatrick dropping back to nine under – where he started the round – having reached 11 under.

Scheffler reeled off six straight pars but still did not lose his overnight lead before a back-to-back eagle and birdie represented a gear shift.
His back nine included eight pars, and the kind of nerveless saves which have made him one of the most successful and consistent golfers of the last three years – closing out victory the last 10 times he has held the outright 54-hole leads.
'A lot of it is staying patient. I know what I need to do tomorrow and it is a matter of going out and doing it,' said Scheffler, whose three majors wins have all come leading after the third round.
'I'm not thinking about winning The Open when I go to sleep tonight.'

Englishman Tyrrell Hatton got himself to nine under but a bogey at the 16th halted his progress, while slightly further down the leaderboard 52-year-old compatriot Lee Westwood had a round of two halves, going out in 40 before an Open record-equalling 29 for the back nine.
'It was a good back nine, wasn't it? I'd have taken 29 on the back nine stood on the 10th tee,' he said.
Defending champion Xander Schauffele, who started the day two under having been in danger of missing the cut until a birdie run on his Friday back nine, played the three par-fives in five under with two eagles on the back nine after a birdie at the second.
His 66 moved him to seven under but the two-time major winner accepts he is too far back.
'It would have to be a perfect storm situation, it doesn't look like any of those boys up front are letting up,' he said.

Will Levis criticized by ex-Titans star after shoulder surgery rules him out of 2025 NFL season

A former Titans star has been left puzzled by Will Levis' decision to undergo season-ending shoulder injury on the first day of training camp. Levis initially sprained his AC joint in Week 4 vs. the Dolphins last year before returning to the field after the Titans' Week 5 bye. The quarterback later sat from Weeks 7 to 9 but ultimately finished a difficult season under center with 12 starts. He later participated in OTAs and minicamp this offseason. However, Levis has now elected to undergo surgery on his shoulder issue, and former Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan couldn't quite understand the timing of the move. 'I'm sure there's a side to the story that explains why Will waited until late July to get this surgery,' he wrote on X. 'Unfortunately, im too dumb to figure out what that is.' The Titans announced on their website that Levis' surgery was set for Tuesday - which is also the first day of their training camp - and released a statement in support of the young passer. 'After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health,' the team said. 'He approached the offseason with professionalism and showed clear growth as a leader. We remain confident in his full recovery.' Citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Levis experienced discomfort during minicamp before starting to look into his medical options. He had reportedly hoped before that the injury would heal itself with rest and rehab. Levis also spoke in May about 'relearning his stroke' with personal quarterback coach Jordan Palmer, whom he worked with in California. While Ward - the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft - was always expected to be the team's starter - Levis' surgery leaves the team thin behind him. Tim Boyle and Brandon Allen have limited experience starting, though Allen produced a respectable 199-yard, one touchdown, one interception start for the 49ers last year. Allen has 10 career stats, while Boyle has just five. At what was likely less than full health, Levis struggled last season in his sophomore campaign. He posted just a 2-10 record under center and turned the ball over 18 times (six fumbles, 12 interceptions) while throwing 13 touchdowns.

Darts star Daryl Gurney ‘held back by security' in furious backstage row with Gerwyn Price

GERWYN PRICE and Daryl Gurney were involved in angry backstage scenes after their World Matchplay bust-up. The pair ended their clash with a fiery ruckus on Monday night with the Welshman aggressively grabbing his rival's hand. 1 But it kicked off behind-the-scenes with Gurney having to be restrained by security as Price did his post-match interview with talkSPORT. Damian Vlottes, from the Dutch Darts Draait Door podcast, said: 'Gurney was literally at the door with his head round the corner. 'Two security guards had to hold him back. He clearly wanted to confront Price again. He came in swearing.' Former top player Vincent Van der Voort added: 'He was ready for a nice, friendly chat! 'He was absolutely fuming. Still insisting he did nothing wrong, that it was all on Price. 'I only spoke to Daryl afterwards. All he said was, 'I didn't do anything wrong.' He was angry, really angry. There was no calm conversation. He made it clear he's not a fan of Price. 'But I imagine Price would say the opposite. There's so much emotion involved. I don't mind it though, adds spice to the sport. As long as it doesn't turn physical, this sort of tension has its place.' The players have history of aggro and the contest, won 10-7 by Price, became more feisty as it progressed. Gurney was clearly winding up the Welshman with mocking gestures and facial expressions. Price responded with his typical super-loud leg-winning celebration roars. The first flashpoint came immediately after the match concluded. Vlottes said: 'He gave him the handshake, very firmly. I thought it was a fantastic moment to watch. Then Price said something, Gurney looked taken aback and stormed off the stage. You could see how intense it was. 'You could tell Gurney was already starting to wind things up. Constantly provoking.' Van der Voort added: 'There was a bit of mimicking, body language… you could feel the tension rising between them. 'He was at it throughout, gesturing, little games. That's fine. But to blow up like that straight after the match… clearly a lot of bottled-up frustration. It's unfortunate, but at least we've got something to talk about now.' Despite the incident dominating social media and on Sky Sports, Price asked not to be questioned about Gurney in the post-match press conference. Vlottes continued: 'No questions about it were allowed. We had plenty lined up, but we were told not to ask. That wasn't the journalists, it was the PDC's decision.' Van der Voort added: 'That's where they fall short, in my opinion. It's a shame. Sport is emotion, and this sort of thing happens in every sport.' Price did touch on the subject, saying: 'I've learnt to try and keep my emotions in tact at key points sometimes. I did today in two or three legs where my head was going to blow off. I just had to keep it in.' Price did later post on his Instagram story: 'Have to be careful these days I'm down to light cruiser weight.' In amongst all the aggro, Michael van Gerwen made a light-hearted attempt to calm down the situation. Van der Voort said: 'He came out of the players' room, he had to play next and said, 'Come on lads, calm down' in the corridor.' It's not the first time the pair have clashed, they have had previous rows in the Premier League which started at Sheffield in 2019 and had to be separated by security on that occasion.
