Ex-Anglesey school staff member jailed for child sex abuse

Jonathan Evans, 32, of Malltraeth, Bodorgan, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment at Caernarfon Crown Court today (July 25). Evans was found guilty after trial on June 30 of the following nine offences: Prosecutor Joshua Gorst said Evans' offending involved him cupping his hand on one boy's genitals, and asking him questions such as if he had had sexual intercourse yet. To one of the boys, Evans sent sexually explicit images of himself via Snapchat, and asked the child to send him similar pictures of themselves. One of the boys was 'groped' by Evans, who also made 'thrusting movements' behind him. In a statement, one of the victims said Evans showed 'not a shred of empathy or remorse' throughout his trial. 'I could not have lived with myself if I did not take a stand against this person,' they added. The second victim said: 'The trauma I endured shattered not only my aspirations, but also my sense of safety and self-worth. 'I spiralled into a prolonged period of mental health struggles. At my lowest point, I even wrote a suicide note intended for my parents; something no person should have to do. 'The impact has been long-lasting and deeply ingrained. The doors that were once open to me have since closed. 'This experience has deeply affected every aspect of my life. I continue to feel the long-term consequences of what was done to me.' Representing Evans, Anna Price asked the court to acknowledge his 'immaturity' at the time of these offences, and his absence of previous convictions. Ms Price also highlighted the delay in the case concluding – a report about Evans was first made in November 2020, but he was not charged until January 2024. He was suspended from work following the initial complaint being made, and did not find another job until February of this year. 'His life has effectively been on hold for over four-and-a-half years now, waiting for the outcome of these proceedings,' Ms Price said. Evans' parents were present throughout his trial, while his father attended today's sentencing hearing. Sentencing, Judge Nicola Jones told Evans he was responsible for 'inappropriate' and "grooming" behaviour. She described one of his victims as 'extremely resilient,' and said the other had been 'profoundly affected' by Evans' offending. An indefinite sexual harm prevention order was also issued, while Evans must adhere to sex offenders register notification requirements for life. Lifelong restraining orders were made to protect Evans' victims. Speaking after sentencing, Detective Constable Richard Dwyfor Clark, of North Wales Police labelled Evans a "selfish, manipulative predator". He said: "At the centre of this case are a group of young people and their families. "I would like to thank them for the dignity and determination they have shown in bringing him to justice today. 'I would also like to thank the prosecution legal team, court and the Crown Prosecution Service for their work in this case, as well as the Air Cadets and school, who have supported this investigation throughout. 'If you suspect someone is being sexually abused, or if you have experienced abuse yourself, please contact North Wales Police. We will take your report seriously and support you.'

Apprentice bricklayer Jay flew to the Spanish island last June to attend the NRG music festival in Playa de las Americas with two friends. Meanwhile, a Brit tourist died while swimming during a boat trip around the Greek islands. The man, 75, was dragged from the sea off the holiday hotspot of Kefalonia during the tourist trip. He jumped into the water when the vessel stopped off Ammoudi Beach and fell unconscious before other passengers pulled him into the boat. The holidaymaker was given first aid on the vessel before he was pronounced dead in hospital. The circumstances of his death are being investigated by Greek authorities. A Foreign Office spokesperson told The Sun: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.' It comes just days after a pensioner was found dead on a sun lounger in nearby Crete. More to follow...
