Glenview Squares celebrates 75 years of square dancing with ‘Denim & Diamonds'
To celebrate the 75th anniversary, the Glenview Squares hosted a 'Denim & Diamonds' dinner and dance on May 16 at White Eagle Banquets in Niles. Nationally-known square dance caller Andy Allemao came from California to call the dances.
Janice Cha of Morton Grove, who joined Glenview Squares in 2003, said 130 people attended the Denim & Diamonds event.
'We had a silent auction, photo booths, a raffle, a cash bar and a delicious dinner,' Cha said. 'We had half dancing and half chatting and visiting with friends.'
Mundelein resident Marla Schneider, who is president of Glenview Squares along with her husband Kerry Stein, said the event 'was wonderful. It really turned out well. We recognized all our visitors who attended the dance and supported us. We also recognized all of our current board members and committee chairs for all the work they've done in the past year. And then we introduced the newly elected board. Then we danced and celebrated the night away.'
A video of photos from the past 75 years was going and there was a writeup about the history of the club, Schneider said.
The start of Glenview Squares was part of a trend, Cha indicated. 'Seventy-five years ago, square dance clubs were popping up all over the place,' she said. 'You could have found a square dance club in almost every town.'
She believes that the reason Glenview Squares is still going strong is because, 'We had the right people in place—people who were able to envision different ways of doing things.'
That was particularly apparent in 2014 when Glenview Squares reduced the teaching list from 100 calls to 50 calls. 'That's way too much for people to learn,' Cha explained. Cutting the number of calls to learn in half allowed the club to offer lessons twice a year and welcome more new members.
There are currently around 110 members in the club. In order to become a member, you have to have learned the first 50 calls. The membership fee is $125, which covers all regular club dances between June and May. There are dances the first and third Friday of each month, September-May. The main dance venue is First Presbyterian Church, 824 Waukegan Rd., Deerfield.
Cha reported that Glenview Squares has done fun things over the years.
'I took it into my head that we should do flash mobs,' she said. 'Pre-pandemic, I helped spearhead several flash mobs.' The first flash mob was near the Bean sculpture in Millennium Park.
The group has done demonstrations of square dancing at such places as Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo.
'During the pandemic, we took square dancing online,' Cha said. 'When the weather got better, we took square dancing from Zoom to outside in a parking lot.'
The club is run by 17 members—elected officials and committee chairs.
Some club members take the next step, as did Cha's husband, James Cha, who became a caller in 2017. After taking two classes in calling, 'I got hooked,' he said. 'I kept going to caller school and I kept working with much more senior established callers and I learned how to call.'
He described square dancing as a puzzle.
'Everybody starts on a square called their home spot,' James Cha said. 'My job is to move them all around into different formations, have them interact with the other members of their square, and then get them back home using only square dance calls. There's a lot of strategy in moving folks around and making sure that they end up back with their original partner back home.'
Club President Schneider praised 'the teamwork, the camaraderie, and the fellowship' of belonging to Glenview Squares. 'Also, it keeps your mind very active.'
Cha concluded, 'Square dancing is such a natural way to meet people who are generally nice folks and learn something that will keep you active well into your later years, challenging your body and your brain at the same time.'

Paolo Sorrentino's ‘La Grazia' Toplining ‘The Great Beauty' Star Toni Servillo Set as Venice Film Festival Opener
Paolo Sorrentino's 'La Grazia,' a love story that re-teams the Oscar-winning director with 'The Great Beauty' actor Toni Servillo, has been set as opening film of the upcoming Venice Film Festival. 'La Grazia' – the title can be translated in English as 'Grace' – will be launching from the Lido in competition. More from Variety Colman Domingo to Host amfAR Venice Film Festival Gala (EXCLUSIVE) Venice 2025: 'Smashing Machine' With Dwayne Johnson, Luca Guadagnino's 'After the Hunt' Starring Julia Roberts, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos' Latest Collab Eyed for Lineup Wong Kar-wai's 'Blossoms Shanghai' Sets Criterion Channel Launch Following Mubi Acquisition Servillo stars in 'La Grazia' opposite Italian actor Anna Ferzetti, who recently appeared in Ferzan Ozpetek's smash hit 'Diamonds.' Plot details of Sorrentino's new film are being kept under wraps besides the fact that it is a love story set somewhere in Italy. 'La Grazia' will mark Servillo's seventh collaboration with Sorrentino who has shot 10 feature films to date. They first teamed up in Sorrentino's dazzling 2001 debut, 'One Man Up' in which Servillo played an ageing cocaine-addicted crooner. Servillo is best known to international audiences for his memorable turn as Roman writer and socialite Jep Gambardella who embarks on a Dantesque descent amid the Eternal City's grotesque glitterati in 'The Great Beauty,' which won the 2014 best international film Oscar. He also played a heroin-addicted accountant for the mob in Sorrentino's sophomore film 'The Consequences of Love;' controversial Italian politician Giulio Andreotti in 'Il Divo;' and media-mogul-turned-politician Silvio Berlusconi in Sorrentino's 'Loro.' 'I am very happy that the 82nd Venice International Film Festival will open with the new and highly anticipated film by Paolo Sorrentino,' Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera said in a statement. He went on to underline that Sorrentino made his festival debut at Venice in 2001 with 'One Man Up' during Barbera's early years as Venice chief. Though Sorrentino launched several subsequent works – including 'The Consequences of Love,' 'Il Divo,' and 'The Great Beauty' – from Cannes, his rapport with Venice consolidated over the years with the launch from the Lido of the first episodes in his groundbreaking series 'The Young Pope' (seasons one and two) and, with his 2021 film 'The Hand of God' that won the Silver Lion-Grand Jury Prize. 'Paolo Sorrentino's return [to Venice] in competition comes with a film destined to leave its mark for its great originality and powerful relevance to the present time, which the audiences of the Venice Film Festival will have the pleasure of discovering on opening night,' Barbera concluded. 'La Grazia,' which is written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, is a Fremantle film produced by The Apartment, a Fremantle Company, by Sorrentino's own Numero 10 shingle, and by PiperFilm that will distribute it in Italy. Mubi owns worldwide rights excluding Italy. The Match Factory is handling international sales. As previously revealed by Mubi boss Efe Cakarel, Jim Jarmusch's triptych picture 'Father Mother Sister Brother,' starring Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver, is believed to be up for a Lido competition slot. The upcoming edition of Venice is shaping up to be a star-studded affair with Benny Safdie's 'The Smashing Machine,' featuring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champ Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino's #MeToo-themed thriller 'After the Hunt' starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri; and 'Bugonia,' the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone — who were last at the fest in 2023 with the Oscar-winning 'Poor Things' — all likely to be set for a Venice sendoff, as Variety has reported. As previously announced, two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne will preside over the main jury. The 82nd edition of Venice will run Aug. 27-Sept. 6. The lineup will be announced on July 22. Our favorite style queen hit Paris Fashion Week Men's 2025 to support her beau A$AP Rocky's fashion line – and all eyes were glued on her. The 'Diamonds' singer stepped out with their adorable toddler, Riot Rose, at the AWGE Menswear Spring/Summer 2026 show. On June 27, she gave mommy-and-me style goals that we loved wearing a bold, striped button-up paired with a playful navy tennis skirt, gray knee-high socks, and lace-up white heels. Ri completed the vibe with a vibrant yellow Dior tote that read, 'Dracula,' long wavy black hair, and a popping pink gloss. Little Riot's fit was just as show-stopping. He rocked a distressed Harley Davidson jean jacket, purple cargo pants, and baby Vans sneakers. In other words, he looked every bit the superstar toddler. See front row video captures from WWD . But this wasn't Ri Ri's first stop that day. Earlier, RiRi and Rocky had the fashion streets buzzing at Dior's Homme Spring 2026 show. Rihanna wore a crisp white blouse beneath a mint-green blazer and slouchy gray trousers, topped with a gorgeous patterned cape. With her signature shades, a messy updo, and luxe jewelry game, she effortlessly reminded us why she's the undefeated maternity fashion champ. Rocky kept things colorful and coordinated. The fashion icon, rapper, and designer rocked a powder blue button-up shirt and dark wash jeans. He added a playful touch with a red, green, and blue patterned Dior tie and carried a beige fringe bag. See video of the couple's arrival from Vogue . Rihanna may reign as the queen of maternity fashion – as every pregnancy has come with headline-making style moments – but what makes this era even more iconic is the stylish crew she shares it with.
