The Group's net interest and financing income increased by 3.5% to RM2.80 billion, supported by a stable net interest margin and growth in loans and deposits. Non-interest income showed a stronger increase, rising by 18.9% to RM772.1 million.

On prospects, the banking group acknowledged concerns about potential disruptions to international trade due to reciprocal tariffs announced by the United States. While a 90-day pause has been implemented, uncertainties remain about the long-term impact on global growth.
The bank noted that Malaysia, being an open economy and a key trade partner to the US, is susceptible to these trade tensions. However, it also pointed to supportive domestic measures such as wage hikes, ongoing infrastructure projects, a stable employment market, and a diversified economic structure, which are expected to mitigate some of the downside risks.
Tan Sri Tay, in the statement, emphasised the Public Bank Group's commitment to maintaining long-term resilience and sustainable growth. The Group plans to focus on its core competencies, capitalize on emerging opportunities and support customers in adapting to the evolving economic landscape Related

Bursa opens slightly higher after OPR cut lifts sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia opened slightly higher on Thursday, supported by a modest improvement in sentiment following Bank Negara Malaysia's decision to cut the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 basis points to 2.75% on Wednesday. At 9.07am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged up 0.85 of-a-point, or 0.06%, to 1,530.09 from Wednesday's close of 1,529.24. The benchmark index had earlier opened 2.19 points higher at 1,531.43. Market breadth was positive, with gainers outpacing losers 193 to 101, while 256 counters were unchanged, 1,868 untraded, and 10 suspended. Turnover stood at 921.01 million shares worth RM63.50 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the rate cut may put marginal pressure on the ringgit, which in turn could help offset the US 25% trade tariff. 'Also, within a low interest rate regime, banks may benefit from improved loan activities. As a result, we expect the index to trend between the 1,530–1,540 range today,' he said in a note. Thong added that Wall Street rebounded overnight despite continued uncertainty over US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, with sentiment buoyed by artificial intelligence (AI)-driven trades. 'Expectations that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this month also pushed the US 10-year yield down to 4.36%,' he said. Among heavyweights, Maybank was unchanged at RM9.70, while Public Bank and CIMB Group rose three sen each to RM4.29 and RM6.60, respectively. Tenaga Nasional slipped four sen to RM13.96, and IHH Healthcare declined 10 sen to RM6.57. In active trade, Green Ocean and Magma Group added one sen each to 11 sen and 49 sen, respectively. TWL Holdings rose half-a-sen to three sen, Eco Shop gained two sen to RM1.29, while NexG was flat at 44.5 sen. On the broader index board, the FBM Emas Index advanced 12.91 points to 11,497.13, the FBMT 100 Index added 10.98 points to 11,260.52, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index was up 1.70 points at 11,488.59. The FBM 70 Index climbed 36.82 points to 16,671.76, while the FBM ACE Index inched up 1.33 points to 4,497.96. By sector, the Financial Services Index gained 30.27 points to 17,535.76, the Industrial Products and Services Index rose 0.27 of a point to 153.49, the Plantation Index eased 21.77 points to 7,457.31, and the Energy Index slipped 0.52 of a point to 736.38.

S&P 500, Nasdaq close at record highs on strong US jobs data

Data showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 147,000 jobs last month beating forecasts by 33% from economists expecting 110,000 jobs. (AP pic) NEW YORK : Wall Street rallied on Thursday to record closing highs, as chipmaker Nvidia rose closer to a US$4 trillion valuation and a surprisingly strong US jobs report cheered investors, who shrugged off dimming chances for an interest rate cut this month. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs, notching a third week of gains. The Dow closed up 0.77%, only 0.41% away from its own record. Chipmaker Nvidia rose 1.3%, putting its market capitalisation at US$3.89 trillion. The company is close to overtaking Apple's all-time record and becoming the world's most valuable company in history. Trading volume was light in a shorter session on the eve of Friday's US Independence Day holiday. 'We are seeing a real bout of irrational exuberance; the stock market is very biased towards optimism,' said Kristina Hooper, chief market strategist at Man Group in New York. 'But there's some basis for it. I think there is some level of relief because the jobs report was not as weak as it could have been.' The rally has been fuelled by retail investors, who are largely ignoring the inflationary pressure on the horizon, uncertainty around tariffs and 'are focused on the tangible, which is today's jobs report,' she said. The S&P 500 gained 51.94 points, or 0.83%, to 6,279.36 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 207.97 points, or 1.02%, to 20,601.10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 344.11 points, or 0.77%, to 44,828.53. Data showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 147,000 jobs last month, 33% more than the 110,000 jobs forecasted by economists polled by Reuters. Unemployment fell to 4.1% last month, a better result than the 4.3% expected. Traders quickly priced out chances of an interest-rate cut in July, with the odds of a 25-basis-point reduction in September at 68%, according to CME Group's Fedwatch tool, down from 74% a week ago. After markets closed, Republicans in the US House of Representatives approved President Donald Trump's massive tax-cut and spending bill, an expected outcome. The legislation will add US$3.4 trillion to the nation's US$36.2 trillion debt, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, and will also push millions of Americans off health insurance. Large tax cuts and increased government spending can boost demand in the economy. This can add inflationary pressure, especially when the economy shows signs of strength, such as the latest jobs report. 'Some data points, like the jobs report, are positive and charming. But if we just take a step back, the picture is not that great,' said Alex Morris, CEO of F/m Investments, which manages US$18 billion in Washington, DC. For the week, the S&P 500 gained 1.72%, the Nasdaq rose 1.62%, and the Dow climbed 2.3%. The Russell 2000 Small Cap index rose 3.41%. 'It's kind of perplexing,' Morris said. 'This feels like that last bull rush before all of the data really comes together.' Tripadvisor climbed 16.7% after the Wall Street Journal reported activist investor Starboard Value had built a stake of more than 9% in the online travel company. Datadog jumped 14.9% after the cloud security firm was set to replace Juniper Networks on the S&P 500. Trading volume on U.S. exchanges was 10.85 billion shares, much lighter than the 17.82 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

Bursa Malaysia ends morning session higher amid regional rebound and tariff optimism
