Trump says Bongino ‘in good shape' despite Epstein files infighting
Bongino has been at the center of the internal fighting over the Epstein situation, with a source familiar confirming to The Hill that the deputy director is furious over how the documents were handled and has clashed with Justice Department leaders.
During a press gaggle at Joint Base Andrews on Sunday evening, Trump was asked if Bongino, previously a far-right podcaster, was still the deputy FBI director, and whether they had spoken recently.
'Oh I think so. I did, I spoke to him today. Dan Bongino, very good guy. I've known him a long time. I've done his show many many times. He sounded terrific, actually. No, I think he's in good shape,' Trump said.
The Justice Department and FBI issued a joint memo last week that sought to counter claims about Epstein that have long been promoted by conservative media figures including Bongino and FBI director Kash Patel.
The memo said Epstein, a convicted child sex trafficker, did not have a client list and confirmed he died by suicide in his New York City jail cell in 2019. The list of high-profile clients has been a longtime fixation on the right, and hopes for its release were fueled by Attorney General Pam Bondi saying earlier this year it was on her desk for review.
Axios first reported that Bongino had fought with Bondi since the memo was released. On Friday, multiple news outlets reported Bongino was not at work Friday and was mulling whether to resign from his position.
The White House, meanwhile, called any indications of divisions 'baseless.'
'President Trump has assembled a highly qualified and experienced law and order team dedicated to protecting Americans, holding criminals accountable, and delivering justice to victims,' White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement.
'This work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity. Any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless and distracts from the real progress being made in restoring public safety and pursuing justice for all.'

America has the power to lead the AI revolution – and the leadership to make it happen
America has triumphed in each industrial revolution – whether steel, energy or manufacturing – and has the power to lead the AI revolution, too. This week in Pittsburgh, President Donald Trump is bringing together leaders to address a defining challenge of our time: how to fuel the AI revolution with American energy. Progress on this front will be consequential for our economy, our national security, and America's global leadership. President Trump's announced $500 billion private sector AI investment is a critical enabler for our country. But artificial intelligence won't power itself. It needs vast amounts of electricity, delivered affordably and reliably. And as demand for AI computing surges, the real question isn't just about who writes the best code – it's also about who can build out data center infrastructure behind it. The U.S. has the unique capability to do that – including the energy dominance to fuel it – and we now have the political will to lead. U.S. policy has often prioritized climate idealism over energy pragmatism. Wind, solar and battery technologies will play a key role in our energy future, but they are not available at the scale or reliability needed to fuel expected AI data center demand. And these combined sources are more expensive than U.S. natural gas. Without a balanced and clear-eyed approach, we risk pushing AI innovation – and the economic and national security advantages that come with it – overseas. Other countries are already trying to lure investment away from the United States by subsidizing AI computing power. In China, dozens of data centers are being built – 39 approved in the last quarter of 2024 alone. In Malaysia, authorities are fast-tracking electricity infrastructure for data centers, cutting lead times to just 12 months, compared to five years in the U.S. Some American companies are already helping to finance data center growth in the Middle East. The path to powering America's AI dominance is rooted in abundant American natural gas. The United States is already by far the world leader, accounting for a quarter of global natural gas production. And we are also one of the lowest-cost producers. Equally important is to ensure AI power demand doesn't drive up electricity costs for consumers. We can develop natural gas-based power generation independent of the current electric grid and co-locate it with data centers across the country. Providing this dedicated electricity prevents a competition for grid-connected power, which would drive up costs and burden our already strained electricity grid. New solutions like this require creative partnerships and continued innovation – which is why Chevron is working with Engine No. 1 and GE Vernova to establish facilities designed to provide reliable, affordable, long-term power-generating solutions to underpin American AI leadership. President Donald Trump, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Sen. David McCormick, R-Pa., recognize the opportunity for the United States to achieve AI dominance. By leveraging abundant American natural gas as a foundation to meet surging AI power demand, we can strengthen our national security, grow our economy and protect our technology leadership. Pentagon to start using Grok as part of a $200 million deal with Musk's xAI
The Pentagon has signed on to use Grok, the AI chatbot built by Elon Musk's company xAI, as part of a new $200 million agreement that opens the door for its deployment across the federal government, the company announced Monday. The announcement comes amid Musk's public breakup with President Trump and days after Grok generated antisemitic responses and praised Adolf Hitler. The rollout is part of "Grok for Government," a newly launched suite of tools designed for use by federal agencies, local governments, and national security operations. xAI said its products, including its latest Grok 4 model, will now be available for purchase through the General Services Administration (GSA), allowing any federal office to adopt the technology. The move aligns with the Trump administration's push for more aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence across the government. Since taking office in January, Mr. Trump has championed AI as a pillar of national security and innovation. Musk himself briefly served in the Trump administration earlier this year, overseeing the White House's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, before stepping down in May amid a public break with Mr. Trump over his sweeping tax and spending bill. Musk has since emerged as a sharp critic of that legislation, even floating the idea of launching a third political party. Despite the rift, xAI has continued to expand its government work. The new offering includes custom national security tools, AI-powered science and health applications, and cleared engineering support for classified environments. The announcement comes just days after Grok generated antisemitic responses to user prompts and referenced Hitler as part of what the company called an effort to make the model "less politically correct." Hours later, Musk wrote in a post on X that "Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed." The posts were later deleted and xAI said it "quickly" patched the issue. One day later, xAI launched an upgraded version of Grok it described as a major leap forward. Musk also announced that Grok would be used in Teslas. But the latest version was not without kinks, too: Grok checked with Musk's views before answering a question, according to The Associated Press. Grok was introduced in late 2023 as a more unfiltered alternative to other chatbots like ChatGPT, and is already integrated into Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. "America is the world leader in AI," xAI said in Monday's post announcing the Pentagon deal. "We're excited to contribute back to the country that made xAI uniquely possible here." Sen.
