Trinity Rodman bursts into tears after stoppage time winner in injury return

The Guardian14 hours ago
Trinity Rodman scored in stoppage time of her first game since April to give the Washington Spirit a 2-1 victory over the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday.
Rodman was on the bench to begin the game before entering to the roar of the crowd at Audi Field in the 76th minute. Rodman had not played since 12 April because of a nagging back issue.
Rodman, who won a gold medal with the United States at the Olympics last summer, buried her head in her hands and sobbed after the goal, her first for the Spirit since last Sept. 15.
'That was the hardest thing I've had to go through, with the injury and everything. So being back, especially at the home stadium with the crowd behind me, scoring a goal like that, you saw I buried it, was not going to miss it,' she said afterward. 'I'm just really happy to be back. I missed the team, I missed doing what I love, so just joy.'
The Spirit (8-4-2) moved into second place in the standings with the victory as the team returned from the league's six-week summer break. The Orlando Pride hosted the Utah Royals in Sunday's late match.
The Thorns (6-4-4) had won their last two matches before the break.
Gift Monday put the Spirit in front in the 17th minute, taking a well-placed cross from Rosemonde Kouassi and easily putting it past Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold. Monday has five goals this season.
Although the Spirit dominated early on, Portland tied it up in first-half stoppage time on Olivia Moultrie's bolt from the top of the box.

Adrián González, who was the Spirit's interim head coach last year before Jonatan Girladez took over last summer, became the team's permanent head coach last month during the NWSL break when Giraldez was named coach of Lyon in France's top league.
Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury surpassed former Spirit player Tori Huster for most minutes played with the club in the second half.

Former Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford opponent Amir Khan makes prediction for super-fight

Amir Khan has made his prediction for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez 's super-fight with Terence Crawford, as the only boxer to have fought both men as a professional. The now-retired Khan was viciously knocked out by Canelo in 2016, and lost to Crawford by TKO in 2019 after his corner threw in the towel following an accidental low blow. Next, the Mexican and American stars are set to square off in Las Vegas on 13 September. At Allegiant Stadium, 35-year-old Canelo will defend the undisputed super-middleweight titles against Crawford, 37, who has already held undisputed titles at super-lightweight and welterweight. However, in facing Canelo at 168lb, the unbeaten Crawford will be hitting a career-high weight by far. His current high is a sole outing at 154lb last year, when he outpointed Israel Madrimov. 'There are weights for a reason in boxing,' Khan told The Ring recently. 'I have huge respect for Crawford for showing the b***s and fighting a beast like Canelo. 'Maybe Crawford is seeing something in Canelo that others are not seeing, and that he is past his sell-by date. And maybe Crawford is the guy to catch him at the right time. Let's see, I think it's a brilliant fight. 'I'm going to support my boy, Terence Crawford. He's a good friend of mine. I think he can do it. He has a great boxing IQ; his IQ is perfect, and he can see everything. 'Crawford does hit hard, a lot of people don't give Crawford the credit for the punch power he has. I've been in the ring with him, he's hit me hard. 'Obviously the most powerful fighter between the two is going to be Canelo, but I think Crawford still has enough power to hurt Canelo and push him back, and that he is there in front of him as a challenge.' Crawford was in Khan's corner in 2022, when the Briton – now 38 – fought for the final time. On that night in Manchester, Khan suffered a stoppage loss to Kell Brook in a grudge match that was years in the making. Crawford himself had previously boxed Brook, stopping the British fighter in the fourth round in 2020.

‘Add him to the bomb squad' – Man Utd fans demand Ruben Amorim sells £50million midfielder after shocker against Everton

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have already grown frustrated with one of their star players - two weeks before the start of the season proper. Angry supporters have demanded that Manuel Ugarte is added to the club's "bomb squad" after a costly mistake in Sunday night's 2-2 pre-season draw with Everton. 9 9 9 9 9 The Red Devils failed to win for the first time on their pre-season tour of the USA as they played out a feisty draw with the Toffees. And Ugarte made a sloppy error to gift Everton their first goal of the match when he was dispossessed deep in his own half. Ugarte, who could cost Man Utd as much as £50.7m with add-ons included, was trying to dribble away from the box and launch a counter-attack when he had his pocket picked by Vitaliy Mykolenko. The Ukrainian easily stuck a leg out to rob Ugarte of the ball and tip it towards teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye. Gueye then floated a delicious cross to the back post where Iliman Ndiaye tucked home an equaliser to punish Ugarte's mistake. United supporters were less than impressed with the error, lashing out at Ugarte online afterwards. One wrote: "We need to somehow offload Ugarte and find a replacement ASAP. He's so so poor on the ball. Just well below par." While another added: "I desperately want Ugarte to be the man, but it's obvious we can't get any consistency in the midfield with him." A third posted: "Ugarte's touches are very poor. This guy isn't good enough to play for United." And a fourth fumed: "Add Ugarte to the bomb squad". Ruben Amorim already has a "bomb squad" full of unwanted stars that he needs to offload this summer. Marcus Rashford was the first to go after sealing his loan move to Barcelona, while Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho are amongst the high-earning names that are heading for the exit doors. Rasmus Hojlund, who has also been linked with an exit, has vowed to stay and "fight" for his place in the squad, despite Amorim hoping to bring in Benjamin Sesko before the window shuts. Hojlund failed to find the net in Sunday's draw and found himself furious after Patrick Dorgu didn't square him the ball for an easy opportunity to build some confidence. The misfiring striker lashed out at the woodwork instead, kicking the post before berating Dorgu for snubbing the pass in favour of going for goal himself. Hojlund wasn't the only United player to show some frustration during the draw, with captain Burno Fernandes involved in a scuffle in the second half. Fernandes, 30, clashed with Everton's Iliman Ndiaye on the half-way line in ugly scenes that saw both players shown yellow cards. 9 9 With United leading 2-1, the Portuguese playmaker was chasing Ndiaye as the Toffees launched a counter attack when he appeared to kick out at the Senegal international as he skipped away from him. Ndiaye was incensed by the lunging kick, which seemingly had no chance of nicking the ball away, and immediately turned to confront Fernandes. Tempers began to flare from there with the pair trading shoves on the half-way line and attracting the interest of teammates who tried to pull them apart. It tarnished an otherwise impressive outing for the pair who had both found the net earlier in the game. Fernandes opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a calmly taken penalty after James Tarkowski brought down Amad Diallo in the area. While Ndiaye was the Everton man to level the scores in the 39th minute when he scored off the back of Ugarte's error. Fernandes later set up Mason Mount 's 69th minute goal for United, making a clever sideways pass into the box for Mount to spectacularly send curling into the far corner of Jordan Pickford 's net. Before youngster Ayden Heaven turned the ball into his own goal just over five minutes later after Amad's attempted tackle on Dwight McNeil deflected onto his leg and into the back of the net to level the scores. 9 9
