People Genuinely Cannot Believe The Trump Administration Ordered The Burning Of Enough Food To Feed 1.5 Million Kids For A Week

Remember when billionaire Elon Musk boasted about DOGE's cuts to the federal government in what he said was an attempt to rid the government of wasteful spending?
Related:
Well, one of those cuts dismantled foreign-aid programs, the Atlantic reports, and now, the Trump administration has ordered the burning of about 500 metric tons of soon-to-expire food meant to feed families and children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
To scale, that is enough food to feed about 1.5 million children for an entire week. However, instead of being distributed in the US or abroad, it's set to be burned. (And guess who's footing the bill?)
This level of waste drew major backlash from US citizens. One person reacted, "Raise your hand if you're an American and would prefer this food be sent to the children currently being starved in Palestine."
Related:
Many couldn't fathom the idea of burning food when there are children who need it. "They're so 'pro life' until it comes to taking care of actual living breathing children," someone wrote.
"Kids are starving & dying in Gaza & he's incinerating food," another agreed.
This was a common response throughout the internet:
Related:
"Maga and trump are evil," people said.
"The cruelty of this administration is unbelieveable," said another.
Taxpayers also expressed displeasure with their money being symbolically burned with the food. "He's incinerating food that's already been paid for with our $$."
Related:
"so our tax dollars..... he's just lighting on fire? I HATE IT HERE."
Netizens could not seem to find justification. "it's already been purchased," someone said. "he's not just burning food, he's burning money and staving people."
And finally, alarms were raised about homelessness in the US as well. "If our taxes paid for it.... Why not give it to our homeless? What the hell?!?!? Such a waste!!!"

GOP Rep's Response To Donald Trump's Slam Of ‘Weaklings' Base Is Just… Wow

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) brushed off President Donald Trump's harsh words for his own supporters on Wednesday with a comment that's been mocked online as sycophantic and surreal. Trump lashed out at those of his MAGA base who are furious with the Justice Department's refusal to release any more documents related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling them 'stupid.' Asked for his response to Trump's slamming of his own supporters, Burchett spun: 'President Trump has his own opinions, but honestly, man, he wins.' CNN: What's your response to President Trump calling his own supporters weaklings? Burchett: He has a strategy in all this and I suspect it will play out because he wins every time. — Acyn (@Acyn) July 17, 2025 Trump 'has a strategy in all this and I suspect that's gonna play out because, dad-gummit, he wins every dad-gum time,' the Republican added, playing into the MAGA notion that Trump always knows exactly what he's doing at any given time because he's playing 4D chess. 'It's uncanny that he ends up on top,' Burchett added. 'And I suspect on this case he will do as well.' The Tennessee lawmaker's defense sparked swift backlash on social media: Are we back to the 4D chess trope? — The Dr. - ❤️'s Educated Women (@gatesisthedevil) July 17, 2025 Such a weaklings' answer! — Evaristus Odinikaeze (@odinikaeze) July 17, 2025 Sycophant's gotta sycophant. — Bill Schmidt (@BaByBoY12216) July 17, 2025 Panic and rant is a strategy? — Chimes of Freedom (@throbbingvicar) July 17, 2025 Narrator: in fact, the convicted felon fails most of the time and then declares victory anyway. Faith Leaders Can Now Endorse. Will That Swing the N.Y.C. Mayor's Race?

Four days after his remarkable showing in New York's Democratic mayoral primary, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani appeared at the Harlem headquarters of a group headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. He acknowledged the leaders and biblical scriptures that fueled his campaign. 'Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning,' Mr. Mamdani said, a reference to Psalm 30:5, a scripture that is especially popular in Black churches. 'And it has been night for far too long in this city.' Mr. Mamdani did not come to the gathering on June 28, for the National Action Network, explicitly seeking an endorsement from the faith leaders in the crowd. But under a new rule change from the I.R.S., he and his opponents in the mayoral race may be able to secure one without tax repercussions. The I.R.S. said in a court filing last week that houses of worship could endorse political candidates to their congregations without losing their tax-exempt status. The move was initially seen as the agency's formal termination of a longstanding but spottily enforced rule against campaigning from the pulpit. But in New York, the ruling could also open up a new front in the city's heated mayoral race, offering candidates the chance to formally consolidate support from not only faith leaders but their congregations. Squabble Over Safety in N.Y.C. Subway Erupts at Congressional Hearing

How safe is the New York City subway? A Manhattan congressman, who has taken the train for years, and the U.S. secretary of transportation, who rode the subway a few stops in April, drew two starkly different conclusions at a tense public meeting on Wednesday. Each man called the other a liar. The subway is, in fact, much safer than its critics have argued, according to police figures. But detractors have latched onto a recent surge in assaults and the shocking details of a handful of high-profile crimes to paint the subway as lawless and in need of intervention. Wednesday's heated exchange in Washington, part of an hourslong oversight hearing, was the latest skirmish between New York officials and the Trump administration over the state of the city's transit system. Representative Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat and a senior member of the House transportation committee, said that Sean Duffy, the head of the Transportation Department, had distorted statistics to make the subway seem more dangerous than it is. Major crime in the subway — which includes murder, rape, assault and other felonies — was down 3 percent through June, compared with the same period last year. Since the first half of 2019, before the pandemic, major crime was down 8 percent. In pointed questioning, Mr. Nadler asked if Mr. Duffy was aware of the trend. 'No, that's wrong,' Mr. Duffy said, before adding that assaults, one of the most worrisome categories of crime in the subway, had risen sharply. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
