MEDAN, Indonesia -- Travelers and food lovers considering Indonesian cuisine might think of many succulent dishes, including gado-gado , a mixed salad topped with a rich peanut sauce, beef rendang , slowly simmered in coconut milk, or soto , a traditional soup typically eaten for breakfast.
But of all of Indonesia's best-known foods, one stands out as the national dish: nasi goreng (fried rice), which is served all over the country from roadside stalls to high-end hotels.

Royal Holdings in tie-up to open 21 luxury hotels in Japan by 2035

Restaurant operator Royal Holdings Co. is teaming up with Minor Hotels, the largest hotel group in Southeast Asia, to develop luxury hotel accommodation in the Japanese market. The company plans to open 21 hotels across Japan by 2035, targeting wealthy foreign tourists from the more than 36 million people who visit each year. Based in Thailand, Minor Hotels operates more than 560 luxury hotels and resort facilities in 57 countries. It is also a member of the Global Hotel Alliance, the world's largest alliance of independent hotel brands, serving 30 million members. It will be Minor Hotels' first foray into Japan. Royal Holdings and Minor Hotels established a joint venture earlier this year. On July 10, they unveiled plans to open Anantara Karuizawa Retreat, a hotel and resort facility, in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, in 2030, partnering with general real estate firm List Group. Anantara is Minor Hotels' flagship brand. Situated on a 42,000-square-meter plot overlooking Mount Asamayama, the facility will have 51 guest rooms, of which 23 are suites, It will also boast a spa, swimming pool and restaurants. The companies are preparing to apply for confirmation for construction. Accommodation fees and other details have yet to be determined. William Heinecke, founder and chairman of Minor International, which operates Minor Hotels under its umbrella, told a news conference in Tokyo that Japan is the first choice of overseas destination for Thai people. He expressed gratitude that the globally recognized hotel brand of Anantara had been accepted in the Japanese market. Royal Holdings started in-flight catering services and operating a cafe at Fukuoka Airport in 1951. The company has operated the Royal Host family restaurant chain as well as the Shakey's pizza chain since the 1970s. In addition, it operates restaurants at airports, expressway facilities and hospitals, and runs Tenya, a restaurant chain specializing in tempura rice bowls. As for its hotel business, the company opened its first Roynet Hotel (present-day Richmond Hotel) in 1995. It currently manages 43 Richmond Hotels, which target business travelers. 'We want to operate hotels aimed at wealthy visitors from abroad in tourism destinations and cities around the country as a way to expand the scope of our business,' said Royal Holdings President Masataka Abe.

Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupts again, spewing giant ash plumes miles away
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, erupted for a second straight day, sending a column of volcanic materials and ash up to 18 kilometers (11 miles) into the sky early Saturday and blanketing villages with debris. No casualties were immediately reported. Another eruption Friday evening had sent clouds of ash up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) high and had lit up the night sky with glowing lava and bolts of lightning. The two eruptions happened in a span of less than five hours. Indonesia's Geology Agency recorded an avalanche of searing gas clouds mixed with rocks and lava traveling up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) down the slopes of the mountain. Drone observations showed deep movement of magma, setting off tremors that registered on seismic monitors. Volcanic material, including hot thumb-sized gravel, was thrown up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater, covering nearby villages and towns with thick volcanic residue, the agency said. It asked residents to be vigilant about heavy rainfall that could trigger lava flows in rivers originating from the volcano. Saturday's eruption was one of Indonesia's largest since 2010 when Mount Merapi, the country's most volatile volcano, erupted on the densely populated island of Java. That eruption killed more than 350 people and forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate. It also came less than a month after a major eruption on July 7 forced the delay or cancelation of dozens of flights at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport, and covered roads and rice fields with thick, gray mud and rocks. Lewotobi Laki Laki, a 1,584-meter (5,197-foot) volcano on the remote island of Flores, has been at the highest alert level since it erupted on June 18, and an exclusion zone has been doubled to a 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) radius as eruptions became more frequent. The Indonesian government has permanently relocated thousands of residents after a series of eruptions there killed nine people and destroyed thousands of homes in November. Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 280 million people with frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

No tsunami threat to Japan after huge volcanic eruption in Indonesia
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's weather agency said there is no tsunami threat to the country following a huge volcanic eruption on the Indonesian island of Flores on Saturday. Mt. Lewotobi erupted at around 2:10 a.m. Japan time and the plume briefly rose to a height of about 19,000 meters, the agency said. Shortly after the eruption, it began assessing the possibility of a tsunami reaching Japan. Large volcanic eruptions can sometimes trigger tsunamis due to atmospheric pressure waves, but no significant changes in sea level were recorded at tide gauges in Japan or abroad, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Mt. Lewotobi has been highly active, prompting the weather agency to repeatedly investigate possible tsunami impacts since last year. In each case, no effects on Japan were observed. On Wednesday, meanwhile, the agency issued a tsunami warning for the nation's Pacific coast after a massive earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
