Crack down on illegal migrants getting Aadhaar: LG to city government
In a letter to chief secretary Dharmendra, principal secretary to the LG, Ashish Kundra, said Aadhaar enrolment was an "extremely sensitive exercise" and a monthly audit should be conducted to ensure there were no "loopholes".
He added that illegal migrants obtaining the document had wider national security ramifications.

"It has come to the attention of the LG that in several instances, illegal immigrants have managed to secure an Aadhaar card on the basis of false documentation or misrepresentation," Kundra noted in his letter. tnn
This has a cascading effect as some individuals secure other documents (passport and voter identity cards) which establish nationality and avail of benefits under various govt schemes and impact employment opportunities meant for locals," principal secretary to theLG, Ashish Kundra, noted in his letter.
The LG's principal secretary said there was an urgent need to give a fresh look at the responsibilities assigned to registrars under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, in the Delhi govt, with respect to field-level implementation, monitoring, and verification procedures. While the Unique Identification Authority of India (
UIDAI
) issued directions to state govts in 2022 to shift enrolment agencies working under outsourced mode to in-house mode, the letter noted that the LG expressed concern that this system was not put in place till date and operational mechanisms under various registrars of the Delhi govt were not adequately standardised.

"LG has directed that clear instructions be issued to all registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months," it said.
The letter further stated that the divisional commissioner should supervise the monthly audit to make sure there were no loopholes and accountability of the person gathering data before issuing Aadhaar should be fixed.
Referring to UIDAI directions, the letter pointed out that operators should be on the rolls of the registrars or hired from a manpower hiring agency on a salary basis with clearly-defined training parameters. It added that the registrars should sensitise operators and other staff to collect documents for Aadhaar enrolment and update work strictly as per guidelines.
"Strict action should be taken against any callousness by staff to facilitate Aadhaar enrolment or updating details of illegal immigrants," it said.
The LG's principal secretary also asked for a comprehensive list of all enrolment centres set up by the state govt, including municipal bodies, with the current mode of functioning by July 15.

Sweet deal? Donald Trump claims Coca-Cola has agreed to use 'real' cane sugar in US drinks; company responds
US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Coca-Cola has agreed to swap high-fructose corn syrup for real cane sugar in its soft drinks sold in the United States, following his personal request to the company. 'I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!' Coca-Cola has not confirmed any immediate change in ingredients but responded with a brief statement acknowledging Trump's support, reports Axios. 'We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca‑Cola product range will be shared soon,' the company said in a statement. No clear confirmation from Coca-Cola While the company did not say it would change its formula, it currently uses cane sugar in other markets, including Mexico, the UK, the Middle East and Africa. In the US, the beverage giant switched to high-fructose corn syrup in 1985 due to rising sugar costs and changes in farm subsidies. I f Coca-Cola fully reverts to cane sugar in the US, it could put pressure on domestic corn growers and food manufacturers. John Bode, President and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, criticised the idea, saying, 'Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit. ' Trump's history with Diet Coke Trump is famously loyal to Diet Coke, once drinking up to 12 cans a day during his presidency, according to Time Magazine. He had a red button on the Oval Office desk to summon a butler with a Diet Coke. Ahead of his second-term inauguration, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey gifted Trump a special Presidential Commemorative Inaugural Diet Coke bottle. Trump immediately did not give a reason for pushing the sugar switch, though the announcement follows Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s 'Make America Healthy Again' campaign, which calls for removing corn syrup from American food. Health experts warn that both cane sugar and corn syrup pose similar risks, contributing to obesity and chronic diseases. One can of Coke contains around 39 grams of sugar, close to the 50-gram daily limit suggested for adults. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Talks on with RJD & Left, but Congress may settle for 50-60 seats in Bihar
File photo: Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram addressing a press conference (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Congress is likely to settle for a lower share of seats in Bihar than it contested in 2020, with sources saying that negotiations are on with a constituency-wise analysis among partners, including RJD and Left parties. According to a Congress manager, the party is likely to get a tally between 50 and 60 seats to contest, which would be below the 70 seats it contested in the last election to the 243-member assembly. But Congress, sources said, is focusing more on the "winnability" factor than numbers, and is keen to ensure that the alliance does not face dissonance which a race among allies for a greater share creates. While talks are ongoing, Congress's willingness to settle for a lower tally appears to be a bitter lesson learnt from the humbling experience of 2020. Congress had secured a high tally of 70 seats after intense bargaining, but could win only 19, and ended up taking the blame for the RJD-led alliance falling just short of the magic number against the JDU-BJP combination, which scraped home. Other parties in the alliance were CPM, CPI, CPI (ML), which had performed much better than Congress, compounding the criticism directed at the grand old party. The Patna failure seriously curbed Congress's bargaining power in the elections that followed in Tamil Nadu and other states where the party was a junior member of the alliance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo While the better-than-expected results in the 2024 parliamentary polls raised Congress stock, the Haryana and Maharashtra debacles have marked a setback to the party in the eyes of its allies. At the same time, sources said Congress too is aware of the need for unity among partners and does not want to come across as putting itself above the alliance's interests. In Bihar, according to Congress members, the party is working to ensure coherence in the alliance and seeking to add value to the grand anti-NDA combine by amplifying Rahul Gandhi's messaging among backward classes. The attempt to secure seats for the JMM in Bihar is also seen as a step in that direction.
