Tehatta (Nadia): The mortal remains of
Havaldar Jhantu Ali Sheikh
, the paratrooper who laid down his life during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir's Udhampur district, reached Kolkata at 10 pm on Friday night.
The martyr's body will be kept in Barrackpore overnight and taken to his native village, Pathar Ghata in Nadia, on Saturday morning where preparations are underway to accord him a hero's welcome and bid him a final farewell.
Sheikh, 36, a trooper of the Indian Army's elite 6 Para (Special Forces), was martyred on Thursday during a search operation in the dense Dudu-Basantgarh region. The Army, along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Jammu & Kashmir Police, paid solemn tributes to him at a
wreath-laying ceremony
held at the 166 Military Hospital in Jammu.
Leading the tributes was Major General Shailender Singh, Chief of Staff of the White Knight Corps, who, along with other senior officials, honoured the soldier's sacrifice with military salutes and floral wreaths.

As security forces continue their search for the group of three terrorists believed to be hiding in the Basantgarh belt, back home, an atmosphere of grief has gripped Pathar Ghata. Jhantu's wife, Jhuma Bibi, who had been in Agra, reached her village early on Friday morning with their two children Tanvir, 11, and Rishita, 6. Family members had initially concealed the news from her, telling her that her husband had sustained a bullet injury to the shoulder and was being brought home after surgery. She came to know about the passing away of her husband when she saw garlanded photographs and mourners after reaching her village.
According to Amina Sheikh, Jhantu's niece, Jhuma collapsed in grief upon learning the truth. "Bring me poison, we three will take it. You all brought me here with lies," she reportedly cried. Since then, she has been inconsolable. Both the children have been asking about the whereabouts of their father.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the household. Jhantu's mother, unaware of her son's demise, has remained bedridden and delusional, murmuring: "My son is ok, he is at work." His father has withdrawn into silence, briefly speaking to local people coming to pay respects.
Preparations are underway near the family home to receive the body with dignity. A pandal and pulpit have been erected next to the village mosque, where the final rites will be held. Neighbours and relatives have been flocking to the house, offering condolences and discussing the sacrifice of a brave son of the soil.

"The prosecution effectively presented evidence and witness testimonies, making full use of the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to strengthen and expedite the judicial process. The govt also ensured witness protection, systematic evidence collection, and timely presence in court — all essential elements of a fair trial," he said. "Since July 1, 2024, effective use of digital documentation and witness statements via video conferencing has taken place in the hearing of 25,000 cases across the state. This significantly reduced the need for police and govt witnesses to appear repeatedly in court, resulting in an estimated cost saving of Rs 25 crore for govt," he said.

Last DNA match done, 260 bodies handed over: Min
Ahmedabad: A gruelling fortnight-long exercise to identify all victims of AI flight 171 finally ended on Friday, with forensic experts finding a DNA match for 32-year-old passenger Anil Khimani. His was the last sample out of 241 passengers and crew that perished in the tragedy, which the experts were toiling to match. Khimani was a native of Dahisara village near Bhuj. His mortal remains were handed over to the family on Saturday, confirmed Civil Hospital officials. With the update, state health minister Rushikesh Patel, in a release, stated that bodies of 260 victims of the air tragedy, which includes 241 passengers and crew and 19 killed on the ground, have been identified and handed over to their kin. Those on board included 181 Indian nationals, 52 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national. Out of the total, 31 were flown for the last rites, whereas the rest were sent by road. "Out of the Indian victims, 73 are from Ahmedabad, 29 from Anand, 24 from Vadodara, 14 from Diu, 13 from Maharashtra, 12 from Surat, and 11 from Kheda among others," the minister stated in the release. Lucknow: Ten fresh FIRs were registered against Ansal API on Thursday and Friday at the Sushant Golf City police station, taking the total number of cases filed against the real estate giant in Lucknow to 224. The complaints allege fraud related to undelivered flats, villas and plots amounting to over Rs1.72 crore. Tanuja Krishna Dubey of Railway Officers' Colony, in her complaint said her late father booked a plot in 2011 and paid Rs 33.60 lakh by 2015. Despite multiple requests, the registry was never executed. After her father's death in 2022, Tanuja was allegedly threatened by company representatives when she asked for the registry to be transferred to her name. Dr Shachi Tripathi from Gurugram alleged that she paid Rs 25.32 lakh for a plot that was never transferred to her. Similarly, Amiyaket Singh from Gomtinagar accused the company of duping him of Rs 10.47 lakh for a plot.
