Domestic helper arrested after stealing designer items in viral video

On TikTok, user @brasco posted several videos about discovering how the family's domestic helper had stolen a vast amount of her personal items from her Mamelodi East home.
This included bottles of alcohol like Ice Tropez and Veuve Clicquot, designer Burberry T-shirts, and household items like detergents and hardware.

In the comment section, viewers were shocked at the volume of goods stolen by the domestic helper.
However, the woman's decision to call the police and have her employee arrested had mixed views.
Some felt sorry for the helper and felt that involving the police was unnecessary.

Dead or alive? The latest on Markus Jooste inquest
It's been almost 18 months since the alleged death of Steinhoff businessman Markus Jooste under mysterious circumstances. Authorities have yet to publicly disclose the truth of what really happened on the day he reportedly committed suicide. The 63-year-old's demise came after he had been slapped with a R475 million fine for accounting fraud at his multinational holding company. He has been widely accused of 'faking' his death to avoid imprisonment. On 21 March, Markus Jooste allegedly took his life with a self-inflicted bullet to the head at the Kwaaiwater Beach. The shooting occurred near his luxury holiday home in Hermanus. Jooste, who was discovered on the rocks near the shore, reportedly died shortly after arriving at the Hermanus Medi-Clinic. According to a local car guard, the businessman had used a silencer to reduce the sound of his gunshot. Just one day earlier, the 63-year-old had been fined R475 million by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) for accounting irregularities recorded at Steinhoff International between 2014 and 2017. Jooste – who infamously resigned amid the high-profile investigation – was widely hailed as the mastermind behind SA's biggest corporate fraud case. On social media, South Africans have accused Markus Jooste of taking notes from fellow controversial businessmen Gavin Watson and Brett Kebble, who have been rumoured to have 'faked' their deaths. According to the Cape Argus, a police source claimed that of June 2025, there was still no post-mortem and morgue number in Jooste's inquest docket. The source added that there was also no proof of the weapon he allegedly used. However, police disputed the claim, adding that the investigation into Markus Jooste's death had been concluded. They added that the findings and docket had been submitted to the NPA. 'The firearm used during the incident was subjected to ballistic tests and thereafter returned to the executor as the weapon was registered in the name of the deceased. A report of the ballistic test is filed in the docket for court purposes', police shared. Last month, the Minister of Police told Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson for justice, Glynnis Breytenbach, in a parliamentary committee meeting that the postmortem report, blood/alcohol report, and ballistic report had been included in the investigation. Bethuel Ngobeni, 'kingpin' in illegal gold mining case, still on the run
The National Prosecuting Authority has amended the indictment against eight people accused of being part of an illegal mining enterprise after the alleged kingpin Bethuel Ngobeni failed to appear in court for the second time. Ngobeni, a Zimbabwean whose real name is believed to be Zingai Dhliwayo, has been on the run since December after the Pretoria high court revoked his bail. In February he failed to appear in court and judge Portia Phahlane authorised a warrant of arrest. The new indictment, handed to his co-accused on Monday, omits his name. The accused — Lerato Bathebeng, Dumisani Moyo, Neo Duba, Poppy Mathongwane, Nhlanhla Magwaca, Moseki Sechele, Thabo Sechele and Khudzai Mashaya — face several charges including trading in illicit gold, money laundering, fraud, racketeering and violating the Immigration Act. Bathebeng was Ngobeni's girlfriend. It is believed the accused ran a multimillion rand enterprise in which they bought stolen gold-bearing materials, processed and sold them. Ngobeni is the central figure in the enterprise that operated in Carletonville and Khutsong between 2018 and 2022. The indictment alleged Ngobeni was the mastermind (kingpin) of the enterprise and the first point of contact for all transactions. 'The undercover agents proposed to sell the stolen unwrought gold-bearing material to the members of the enterprise. An undercover agent would contact Ngobeni and inform him he is in possession of the gold,' the indictment reads. Ngobeni would then direct the undercover agents to contact Magwaca, Moyo and Mashaya as well as Charles Mapuya or Elijah Chikati. Mapuya and Chikita evaded arrest in 2022 and are believed to have fled to Zimbabwe. Sowetan reported in August last year about how Ngobeni had stolen the identity of a man from Mpumalanga. The state alleges Ngobeni spent the proceeds of illegal mining on cars and homes, all of which have been placed under preservation until the completion of his trial. According to the state, Ngobeni spent R4.2m on six cars and two houses during a seven-month shopping spree. The new 55-page indictment contains a list of 44 witnesses, including the South African diamond and precious metals regulator, the Hawks and car dealership representatives. The judge ordered that Mashaya be transferred from Potchefstroom to the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. The matter was postponed to Wednesday.
