
Amazon to host first-ever four day Prime Day event
Online marketplace giant Amazon is set to bring back its Prime Day sales event, extending the discount offer to four days for the first time.
Running from July 8 to July 11, the summer sale shopping event offers Prime members access to limited deals across a range of categories, from apparel to personal care and books.
Another new addition to this year's sales event is 'Today's Big Deals,' a curated series of themed daily offers spotlighting some of the event's most compelling discounts, available exclusively to Prime members.
"New this year, we're offering exclusive deals, including fuel discounts for summer travel, alongside some of our lowest prices of the year from top brands," said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, in a statement.
"We're also excited about our enhanced Prime for Young Adults membership, giving 18–24-year-olds the ability to enjoy new exclusive perks like 5 percent cash back for a limited time, plus new shopping features that make discovering personalized savings easier than ever."
Ahead of Prime Day, Prime members will also gain early access to significant savings across key categories—from home tech and fashion to groceries and everyday essentials. These pre-event offers provide strong value well before the official kickoff. Additional early deals include up to 30 percent off select Amazon-owned brands.
From July 1, Prime members can also shop school supplies and household staples from Amazon Basics starting at 3 dollars, along with seasonal fashion from Amazon Essentials, including dresses and swimwear from 12 dollars.
"Prime Day is about celebrating our members by providing them with exceptional savings and convenient delivery, and now is an excellent time to save."

Canada rescinds Digital Services Tax after Trump cuts off U.S. trade talks
Canada has walked back on its digital services tax 'in anticipation' of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the United States, Ottawa announced Sunday night, just one day before the first tax payments were due. The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that he will be 'terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada ' in response to Ottawa's decision to impose a digital services tax on American tech firms. 'Today's announcement will support a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis,' Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in the statement. The first payments from Canada's digital services tax, which was enacted last year and applies retroactively to 2022, were initially set to be collected Monday. The tax would have applied to both domestic and foreign tech companies, including U.S. giants such as Amazon, Google and Meta with a 3% levy. This decision from Ottawa was an about-turn from Canadian officials earlier this month, who said they would not pause the digital services tax, despite strong opposition from the U.S. Canada's Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois-Philippe Champagne added, 'Rescinding the digital services tax will allow the negotiations of a new economic and security relationship with the United States to make vital progress and reinforce our work to create jobs and build prosperity for all Canadians.' However, the statement from Canada's finance ministry also said that Carney 'has been clear that Canada will take as long as necessary, but no longer, to achieve that deal.' The digital services tax was first introduced in 2020 to address a taxation gap where many large tech companies were earning significant revenues from Canadians, but were not taxed. Ottawa also said that the tax was enacted while it worked with international partners — including the U.S.— on a multilateral agreement that would replace national digital services taxes. Shortly after Trump said that the U.S. was 'terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC's Morgan Brennan that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would be investigating the tax to 'determine the amount of harm to the U.S. companies and the U.S. economy in general.' 'Canada has this digital services tax. And several other countries do too. We disagree, and we think that they discriminate against U.S. companies,' Bessent said on CNBC's 'Closing Bell: Overtime.' 'Several countries within the European Union have digital service taxes. None of them have done those retroactively,' Bessent added.

Asia shares track Wall St gains before payrolls test
SYDNEY, June 30 (Reuters) - Asia shares firmed on Monday as seemingly unquenchable demand for technology companies lifted S&P 500 futures to another all-time peak, while the dollar dipped on concerns U.S. jobs data will show enough weakness to justify larger rate cuts. Investors were also keeping a wary eye on the progress of a huge U.S. tax-cutting and spending bill slowly making its way through the Senate, with signs it may not make it by President Donald Trump's preferred July 4 deadline. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill would add $3.3 trillion to the nation's debt, testing foreign appetite for U.S. Treasuries. There was no doubting the demand for the U.S. tech sector and megacap growth stocks including Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab and Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab. Nasdaq futures rose another 0.3%, while S&P 500 e-minis added 0.2%. The bullish sentiment spilled over into Japan's Nikkei (.N225), opens new tab which rose 1.0%, while South Korean stocks (.KS11), opens new tab gained 0.5%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab firmed 0.1%. A holiday on Friday means U.S. payrolls are a day early, with analysts forecasting a rise of 110,000 in June with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.3%. The resilience of the labour market is a major reason the majority of Federal Reserve members say they can afford to wait on cutting rates until they can gauge the true impact of tariffs on inflation, so a weak report would stoke speculation of a rate cut in July rather than September. "While initial jobless claims retreated somewhat from their recent high, continuing claims jumped higher yet again," noted Michael Feroli, head of U.S. economics at JPMorgan. "Consumers' assessment of labor market conditions also deteriorated in the latest confidence report." "Both of these developments suggest that the unemployment rate in June should tick up to 4.3%, with a significant risk of reaching 4.4%." The latter outcome would likely see futures push up the chance of a July easing from the current 18% and price in more than the present 63 basis points of cuts for this year. Fed Chair Jerome Powell will have an opportunity to repeat his cautious outlook when he joins several other central bank chiefs at the European Central Bank forum in Sintra on Tuesday. The prospect of an eventual policy easing has helped Treasuries weather worries about the U.S. budget deficit and the huge amount of borrowing it entails. Yields on 10-year Treasuries were steady at 3.27%, having fallen 9 basis points last week. The dollar has not fared so well, in part due to concerns tariffs and chaotic policies from the White House will drag on economic growth and erode the country's claim to exceptionalism. James Reilly, a senior markets economist at Capital Economics, noted the dollar had fallen by more at this stage in the year than in any previous year since the U.S. moved to a free-floating exchange rate in 1973. "At this point, further weakness could become self-reinforcing as underhedged European/Asian portfolios chase the move," he added. "So, we suspect that this could be a pivotal period for the greenback – either it turns around here or there is another 5% or so fall around the corner." In commodity markets, the general revival in risk sentiment has undermined gold, which slipped to $3,266 an ounce and further away from April's record top of $3,500. Oil prices continued to struggle on concerns about plans for increased output from OPEC+, which contributed to a 12% slide last week. Brent dropped a further 55 cents to $67.22 a barrel, while U.S. crude eased 68 cents to $64.84 per barrel.

ALEX BRUMMER: 'Genius Act' in US compared to Free Banking Era
There long has been something of the Wild West about American banking. The Bank of England has been the backstop for Britain's monetary system since it was founded in 1694. The Federal Reserve only came into being in 1913 to avert banking and financial panics and bring order to a chaotic dollar issuance. Donald Trump and free market advocates are not fond of a monetary system which imposes the same rules across all 50 states and is the sole source of fiat money backed by the government. It offends the idea of a libertarian commonwealth. Enthusiastic backing for crypto currencies, despite the susceptibility to fraud, is part of the mantra. Entryism by bitcoin into the investment firmament, through exchange-traded funds and the creation of the Trump family's own crypto currency, reflect dissonance with central controls. At present, Wall Street eyes are on the struggle over succession at the Federal Reserve when Jay Powell's term ends next year. On the horizon is a challenge for US central banking which reaches far beyond the next leader of the Fed. The 'Genius Act', currently before Congress, seeks to supplement the dollar through the creation of stable coins which would enable American firms to issue their own currencies. The US would be a place where there were dozens of stable coins, issued by the likes of Walmart, Amazon and Starbucks competing against each other. The plan is that a stable coin, tethered in some way to the dollar, also could be issued by federally insured banks such as JP Morgan Chase. Firms or banks issuing less than $10billion of stable coins would be regulated by each of the states of the union. Issue more, and federal regulators would be in charge. The outcome has been compared by Berkeley economics professor Barry Eichengreen to the Free Banking Era between 1830 and the US Civil War. An America deeply sceptical of elites allowed any person or business with surplus funds to open their own bank and issue their own dollars. Some 18 US states issued their own bank notes and triggered mayhem, with shopkeepers unsure of which dollars were safe to accept. In 21st-century Britain, there is a reluctance of merchants and consumers down South to accept the Scottish pound, even though it is fiat money accepted and backed by the Bank of England. Imagine then the bedlam in the 21st-century United States if there were dozens, or even hundreds, of stable coins circulating and no one was quite sure of the bona fides of issuers. How any central bank could be expected to control monetary policy or protect banks from failure is impossible to know. The Genius Act is not fanciful. MAGA Republicans on Capitol Hill might have the votes to pass it, or something like it, into law. The prospect is scary enough for the Bank for International Settlements in Basel to warn against the rise of stable coins, linked to the dollar, arguing they should not be permitted to become part of the global monetary system. It also notes that crypto assets, hidden in secret wallets, facilitate illicit use. Backers of the Genius Act are warned. The concern must be that libertarian fervour and distrust of global institutions is so embedded in American culture that caution will be thrown to the wind.
