
Good news for SMEs with cash flow problems
SME Association of Malaysia president Dr Chin Chee Seong said the revision is 'timely' and is expected to stimulate the economy by boosting domestic demand.
'While economic indicators suggest growth, the reality on the ground often tells a different story.
'The reduction in the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) is a positive development that SMEs are beginning to see,' he said in an interview yesterday.
Chin said the drop in borrowing costs can significantly improve cash flow for businesses reliant on loans.
'Although the amount may not be substantial, it provides a critical buffer for SMEs, which are the backbone of our economy,' he said.
'We learned during the Covid-19 pandemic the importance of maintaining cash flow.'
According to Financial Planning Association of Malaysia president Alex Tan, the rate cut could be good news for SMEs with cash flow problems.
'For business owners with variable-rate term loans, every RM100,000 of borrowing saves them roughly RM12-RM13 monthly. This might seem small, but it can add up and provide breathing room for SMEs managing tight cash flows,' he said.
Businesses, he said, should consider using these savings to reinvest in growth, build a financial buffer or pare down other debts.
'This strategic use of extra cash flow can enhance long-term stability and resilience against economic fluctuations,' he added.
Chin, however, cautioned that other rising costs, such as the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST), higher rental and leasing rates and soaring logistics costs, continue to challenge SMEs, particularly those in the retail, food and beverage, and logistics sectors.
'Despite the interest rate cut, many SMEs face persistent challenges. It's crucial for SMEs to create emergency funds to withstand economic fluctuations and sudden cost increases,' he said.
Highlighting the importance of financial education for SMEs, he said many are still recovering from past economic shocks and operate on tight margins.
'Ongoing education is necessary. SMEs need to maintain reserves that can sustain operations for at least three to eight months, ideally six to 12 months, to withstand economic impacts or sales fluctuations,' he said.
In light of global economic uncertainty, Chin called on SMEs to prepare for the expanded SST and prioritise building emergency funds.
'With the OPR reduction, it's important for SMEs to plan and focus on reserving cash flow and becoming more resilient to economic changes,' he said.

There was a time when entering into a contract was as simple as ABC. The company handed you a contract and you sign off if the terms were acceptable. When you wanted to end the service, you pay the current bill and that was it. But with competition getting intense, businesses have become creative by inventing the subscription contract that comes with a self-renewal clause, unless terminated with notice. And the auto-renewal clause comes with a termination penalty. As high as RM58,000 for quitting a wellness programme, as one complainant told the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC). Herein lies a trap. When you try to unsubscribe from the service, it is like searching for a needle in a haystack. If you managed to do so, you end up paying a hefty penalty. Is this legal? Here, we come face to face with the "on the one hand and on the other hand" argument of lawyers. As a general legal principle, a contract is an agreement between parties. Were the terms made explicit to the consumer? If so, then the consumer's case ends there, except if the penalty is excessive, like the RM58,000 imposed by the wellness company. In such cases, it is best to proceed to the Tribunal for Consumer Claims. Vigilance is the key. But being vigilant isn't easy in a business environment where companies push the concept of consent to the edge of the law. Complaints to the NCCC tell us that the subscription contracts need regulatory intervention. Not that Malaysia doesn't have laws. It has several, but unlike the United Kingdom, not specific to subscription contracts. Do we need one? Certainly, but first, let's look at what we already have. The Contracts Act 1950 (CA) is one of several. Subscription agreements are contracts, they clearly fall under it. The CA makes consent of the parties a critical element. Another, and perhaps more relevant, is the Consumer Protection Act (1999), which specifically addresses unfair contract terms. Astronomical penalties, either made known or hidden, are likely to be treated as such. So will deceptive auto-renewals. Finally, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA). Interestingly, the CMA imposes a duty to act reasonably on all service providers. If the auto-renewals and penalties are not made known to and agreed by the consumer, then the service providers could be found to have failed in their duty to act reasonably. A point needs to be made, though. Despite scores of complaints to the NCCC, there has been no litigation on such issues. Neither have the regulators acted on the complaints, Perhaps, they are waiting for the consumers to lodge a report with them. A report from the consumer shouldn't be the only way for regulators and enforcement agencies to act. Even the police are using viral videos to launch their investigations. The regulators must go where the complaints are: consumer associations, NCCC and media reports. Malaysia needs a specific law such as the UK's Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Proper consent of the consumer, together with a cooling-off period of 14 days, is a pillar of these regulations.

Wasco scales up global sustainability efforts
KUALA LUMPUR: Riding high on its recent win as Company of the Year (Energy Solutions) at the CSR Malaysia Awards 2025, Wasco Berhad is looking to scale up its global sustainability efforts, with a strong focus on deepening community engagement and driving forward Malaysia's energy transition goals. The group is expected to accelerate initiatives aligned with its net-zero target by 2026 while building long-term regional partnerships that strengthen green value chains across its operating markets. The award comes on the back of a milestone year for Wasco. In 2024, the group invested nearly RM800,000 in social and environmental programmes that collectively reached approximately 12,000 lives across Malaysia, Tanzania, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Indonesia. These efforts, anchored on healthcare, humanity and environmental protection, were not just CSR gestures, but integral to Wasco's broader decarbonisation and sustainability strategy. Among the 55 initiatives implemented were free health screenings, vaccination drives, food and disaster relief, school infrastructure upgrades and environmental awareness campaigns promoting circular economy practices. These community-driven projects were matched by strong internal participation, with Wasco employees collectively contributing more than 11,800 hours of volunteer time.
