These apps and games just won Apple Design Awards 2025

The Hindu04-06-2025
Apple on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) pulled back the curtain on its annual Design Awards, spotlighting a dozen apps and games that Cupertino deems the crème de la crème in design and innovation. In a world drowning in apps, getting an Apple Design Award does signal which applications are trending and technologies Apple itself is excited about.
This year's cohort, culled from 36 global finalists, showcases developers who are not just coding, but crafting experiences.
Vision Pro Gets Its Design Award Moment with Taobao
One of the most eyebrow-raising wins came in the Interaction category. Chinese e-commerce behemoth Taobao snagged the app award for its Apple Vision Pro experience. Apple praised its 'convenient and engaging shopping experience' with 'incredible 3D models comparable to their real-life counterparts.' This is a significant nod, signaling that Apple is keen to see developers embrace its spatial computing platform with practical, polished applications. The ability to 'compare items side by side from an extensive selection of products' in an immersive way could be a genuine game-changer for online retail, and Taobao is clearly an early frontrunner.
China Also Nabs 'Delight and Fun' with CapWords
Sticking with international talent, CapWords by HappyPlan Tech won the app award for Delight and Fun. This isn't your snooze-fest language learning app. CapWords 'transforms images of everyday objects into interactive stickers,' offering an 'intuitive and visual way' to pick up new vocabulary across nine languages. It's the kind of smart, simple, yet profoundly useful design that often flies under the radar but makes a daily difference.
Indie Game Charm and AAA Polish Shine
On the gaming front, the awards celebrated Balatro. This 'satisfying fusion of poker, solitaire, and deck-building with rogue-like elements' was lauded for its 'clever details' and 'gripping gameplay.'Innovation in gaming went to PBJ — The Musical by Philipp Stollenmayer. Described as 'snack-based Shakespeare', it mixes rhythm gameplay with a condiment-themed Romeo and Juliet narrative. With haptics and 'clever camera work,' it's joyfully bonkers.
DREDGE, developed by New Zealand-based Black Salt Games, scooped up the Interaction award for its 'seamless interactions' in a game that blends slow-burn horror with fishing and exploration across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Singapore's Infold Games brought home the Visuals and Graphics award for Infinity Nikki, an 'enchanted realm of colour, detail, and rendering' in a cozy open-world adventure.
Utility, Accessibility, and Impact Honored
It wasn't all fun and games, though. Speechify won for Inclusivity, transforming text into audio in over 50 languages. Watch Duty, another app developed in the US, nabbed the Social Impact award for its critical, life-saving wildfire updates. And for pure Innovation in an app, Play by Rabbit 3 Times was recognized for making sophisticated SwiftUI prototyping accessible.

Staff Recall, Magnet Export Curbs: Beijing Targets Indian Manufacturing

Last Updated: China's strategy to hinder India's manufacturing includes recalling workers, banning rare earth magnet exports, and delaying machinery supplies. In a multi-pronged strategy, China is trying to stifle India's ambition to become a global manufacturing hub, which is giving a substitute for global tech companies other than the dragon itself. Recalling its workers from Indian soil, banning the export of rare earth magnets, and delaying the supply of critical machinery are little pawns of a big chess game. Unfortunately, it will impact India's manufacturing sector. The production of iPhones is expected to be impacted at Foxconn's factories in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka after Chinese workers were asked to come back China. The move is anticipated to disrupt the entire production of Apple's iPhones. According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), Chinese engineers and specialists, though fewer than 1% of the workforce, play a crucial role in maintaining production and quality standards at factories like Foxconn in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It comes as a big setback for Apple which is planning to double down its iPhone manufacturing in India and export from India to US and other countries. The situation, as per TOI, is not limited to Foxconn alone. Top Chinese smartphone makers like Oppo and Vivo, which have sizable manufacturing facilities in India, are also facing operational strain. 'While the companies have limited Chinese officials in India, they are worried about 'what more' can follow after this step," TOI quoted another source as saying. The bottleneck began in April, when China, which processes more than 90% of the world's rare earth magnets, introduced stricter export controls. Under the new rules, exporters must obtain government licenses and detailed end-use certificates from buyers before shipping. India imported 460 tons of rare earth magnets in FY24 — virtually all from China — and planned to import 700 tons this year. Their relatively low value belies their critical function. Foxconn asks Chinese staff to fly back home from India — What's the reason? What will be the repercussions? Explained

iPhone maker Foxconn Technology Group, the biggest assembler of the flagship smartphone of Apple in India, has reportedly been asking its Chinese workers in the south Asian country to return to their homes. The move comes amid a blow to Apple Inc.'s manufacturing push in India. As per a report by Bloomberg quoting people in the know, the bulk of Chinese staff in Foxconn's iPhone plants in south India have been told to fly back home in a move that begun two months ago. One of the sources revealed that 300 Chinese workers have already left India as part of the move. Now, support staff from mostly remain in the country. The Bloomberg report said that it was not clear why China-based Foxconn, Apple's biggest iPhone assembler, is sending workers back home. However, the move comes months after officials in Beijing verbally encouraged regulatory agencies and local governments to limit technology transfers and export of equipment to India and Southeast Asia in what seemed to be an effort to prevent companies from shifting their manufacturing units to other countries. The decision comes at a disadvantageous time for Apple, which is preparing to ramp up production of its soon-to-be-launched iPhone 17 with its manufacturing partners in India. Foxconn is at the moment building another manufacturing plant in India. However, the company's move comes after Beijing's push to make it more difficult for technology, skilled labour and specialised equipment to go out of China and shift to manufacturing upstarts such as India, Vietnam and others — countries that are taking advantage of the US-China tensions that have prompted companies to shift manufacturing locations. Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has lauded the skill and expertise of Chinese assembly workers, calling it the key reason for setting up manufacturing units of the country. Their removal of India could potentially mark a shift in the process of iPhone making as it will slow down the training of local workers, Bloomberg reported quoting its sources. The transfer of manufacturing technology may also be affected due to the move, which may then raise production costs. According to one of the sources, while the move will not impact the quality of production in India, it is likely to affect efficiency on the assembly line. Chinese managers have been critical in training Foxconn staff in India. The South Asian nation began assembling iPhones at scale just four years ago, and now accounts for a fifth of the global output. (With inputs from Bloomberg)
