Tom Hanks breaks silence on daughter's abuse claims made in bombshell memoir

News.com.au05-06-2025
Tom Hanks praised his daughter E.A. Hanks' candid new memoir, which detailed her 'abusive' childhood with her late mother, Samantha Lewes.
'It's a pride because, I think, she shares it with me, she's been very open about what the process is,' Hanks told Access Hollywood at The Phoenician Scheme premiere last week.
'I'm not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal, as well as the curiosity, as well as, I'm going to say, perhaps, the 'shoot herself in the foot' kind of wherewithal in order to examine this thing that I think she was incredibly honest about.'
'We all come from checked or cracked lives, all of us, despite the fact that part of it would seem as though she worked for some international well-known firm with a copyrighted last name,' the Forrest Gump actor, 68, continued.
'She knows that, and she leans into absolutely everything of it, and I think anyone who does that is a bold journalistic literary mind, and I'm thrilled I can say the same thing about my daughter.'
Hanks also explained that as a father, he realised who his daughter was when she was 6 weeks old, as he examined her 'personality,' 'temperament,' and the way she viewed the world through her 'body language.'
The Cast Away star shares E.A., 43, and son Colin Hanks, 47, with Lewes, whom he was married to from 1978 to 1987.
Lewes, born Susan Dillingham, passed away in 2002 from lung cancer. She was 49.
In her tell-all book, The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road, E.A. recalled moving to Sacramento with her mum after her famous parents got a divorce.
The author claimed that Lewes struggled with mental health issues and was often abusive toward her.
'She pushed me, shook me, pulled at my hair and locked me in a closet once or twice … she told me there were men hiding in her closet who were waiting for us to go to sleep to come out and do horrible things,' E.A., whose full name is Elizabeth Ann, wrote.
She detailed her lifestyle at Lewes' home, explaining she was never told to brush her teeth, and there was either loads of food or nothing at all.
She also alleged that Lewes would discuss her 'miscarried babies' and suggested E.A. would 'join them in eternal limbo.'
When E.A. was in seventh grade, she moved to Los Angeles with her famous father after her mum's 'emotional violence became physical violence.'
At the time, Tom had remarried his current wife, Rita Wilson, whom he wed in 1988.
'Rita's not really a stepmother, she's my other mother,' she told People in April. 'When I say my parents, I really mean my dad and Rita, because they've been together since before I can really remember.'
Tom and Wilson, 68, share sons Chet, 34, and Truman, 29.

US rapper Mack Maine announces son's tragic death as tributes pour in

Mack Maine has announced the death of his son. The 'Tapout' rapper, who has collaborated with hip-hop greats like Lil Wayne, Future and Nicki Minaj, took to Instagram to reveal that his young son Isaiah, also known as Zeke, died earlier this month from a fatal seizure. He was 20, TMZ reports. 'Been trying to build up the strength to put up this post since last night so bear with me,' Maine, 43, began on Monday. 'On July 16th I received a call that my son Isaiah (Zeke) passed away at his home in California from a seizure,' the New Orleans native continued. 'I'm still in shock and still processing the fact that he's gone. Still confused, still questioning life and why my child and not me.' Maine, who was named president of Lil Wayne's record label Young Money Entertainment in 2009, went on to call fatherhood 'one of the greatest gifts' in life. He wrote that his son's passing has been a 'pain I've personally never felt before.' 'The experience and bond with you and I brought me purpose,' Maine captioned several photos of his late son. 'YOU were my biggest inspiration and were the reason I got out of the bed when everyone else snoozed.' 'Your smile brightened my dark days as you were my SONshine,' the record exec continued. 'Your soul was made of innocence and your heart was pure.' Monday also marked the Always Strapped rapper's 43rd birthday and the second anniversary of his father's death. Maine asked that his fans 'hug the ones you love' and 'tell them you love them.' The rap label exec, whose real name is Jermaine Anthony Preyan, ended his touching tribute with a shoutout to both his late son and dad. 'To Zeke I love you and I know I'll see you again,' he wrote. 'To my Pops I miss you big dawg and I know you met Zeke on the other side with open arms.' 'I vow to continue to make yall proud I just ask yall continue to walk with me and pick me up when I fall … I need the strength …. Until we meet again … LOVE,' Maine concluded. Many of Maine's fans and peers offered their condolences. 'I don't even believe what I just read,' Nicki Minaj, 42, wrote. 'This can't be real.' 'I love you so much,' she continued. 'You guys raised the most incredible young man. He was such a perfect boy. I have no words to express what you must be feeling. No words.' 'We are praying for your whole family, Mack,' the singer concluded her message. 'We love you so much.'

Lionel Messi embarrassed as he and wife Antonela are shown on Coldplay kiss cam

Lionel Messi was caught in a rare moment of awkwardness with his stunning wife Antonela Roccuzzo at a Coldplay concert. The loved-up couple were enjoying the British rock-band's final US show in Miami when the dreaded kiss cam landed squarely on them, The Sun reports. Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. It comes days after the kiss scam scandal involving married and now former Astronomer chief executive Andy Byron and HR head Kristin Cabot. Their ducking reaction to being filmed at Boston's gig caught the world's attention – with millions now talking about an alleged affair. And while many might seize the opportunity for a public smooch, Messi seemed to go bright red given the circumstances (see below). Footage circulating on social media showed the Inter Miami star smiling sheepishly, while Antonela, ever graceful, beamed beside him. With everyone in the crowd cheering 'Messi', the couple waved to fans before Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin serenaded them. Martin, who had jokingly called out Byron and Cabot's potential 'affair' during his performance last week, thanked Messi for coming and called him 'the No. 1 sports person of all-time'. And it didn't take long for fans online to see the funny side. One wrote: 'They should have tried to hide for a second. That would be hilarious.' While another said: 'They were just singing and not dodging any Cam scandals.' A third said: 'Jumbotron with Lionel Messi! (He didn't hide, though).' A fourth joked: 'At least someone went with their own wife. Good.' Although not spotted in the viral clip, Antonela later posted snaps of the couple's three sons enjoying the show at the Hard Rock Stadium. Thiago, 12, was pictured wearing a Coldplay cap, while Mateo, nine, wore a snazzy pair of 3D glasses as Ciro, six, cuddled into his dad. Meanwhile, Messi was serving a one-match suspension for Inter Miami's game against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and fellow Barcelona legend Jordi Alba were punished for skipping Major League Soccer's All-Star game earlier this week. Both players missed Wednesday's match in Austin, Texas where the MLS squad posted a 3-1 win against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars. Elsewhere, humiliated Byron and Cabot quit their jobs at the tech company as a result of the scandal. And Martin's ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow was hired by Astronomer for a tongue-in-cheek video, in what fans are describing as a genius PR move.

Candid new photos suggest two big noughties stars are quietly dating

Two big noughties movies stars have been spotted holding hands after seeing a movie together, suggesting they may be quietly dating. She's All That and Josie and the Pussycats actress Rachael Leigh Cook, 45, was spotted hand-in-hand with former Superman actor Brandon Routh, also 45, in Los Angeles over the weekend. The pair seemed very happy together as they waited in line, Cook holding Routh's hand and at one point putting her arm around his back. Celeb outlet Just Jared, who first reported the news, said the pair may have been dating for months – they made a joint appearance on the Instagram page of a restaurant in Iowa after dining together back in February. Routh is best known for playing Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns, a one-film entry into the DC Comics franchise after a sequel planned for 2009 was cancelled. The franchise was later rebooted with Henry Cavill for Man of Steel in 2013. He was previously married to actress Courtney Ford in 2007 – the couple have a son together, however Ford filed for divorce in January of this year citing 'irreconcilable differences.' While Cook's career as an actress and model started when she was just a child, she's best known for her starring role in the 1999 teen comedy She's All That alongside Freddie Prinze Jr. and for playing the titular role in Josie and the Pussycats two years later. She wed Canadian actor Daniel Gillies in 2004, and the pair had two children together before they divorced in 2021. Cook said in a 2021 interview that, despite her string of box office hits around the turn of the millennium, she never saw herself as being in contention with some of the other big young actresses of the time. 'I never saw myself as shiny and pretty in the way that someone like Jessica Alba or Jennifer Love Hewitt were then,' she told The Independent.
