New West African flight route set to boost trade between Ghana, Burkina Faso

AWA, a leading African Airline has officially launched direct flights between Accra, (Ghana) and Ouagadougou, capital city of Burkina Faso, marking a strategic move into the Sahel region and reinforcing efforts to boost intra-African connectivity.
AWA has initiated direct flights between Accra and Ouagadougou, enhancing connectivity in the Sahel region.
Three weekly flights will operate on this route, supporting AfCFTA's goal to facilitate regional trade and mobility.
Regional officials welcome the development, stating it will boost aviation, tourism, and economic ties between the two nations.
The inaugural flight landed on July 1, 2025, at Ouagadougou International Airport and was preceded by a ceremony in Accra.
Reports read that the Airline will operate three flights weekly, supporting the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) by facilitating smoother movement of people, goods, and services across borders. Ticket prices for the route start at $290, according to the airline.
Togbe Afede XIV, co-Chairman of Africa World Airlines (AWA) and Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, reaffirmed the airline's commitment to African integration through reliable and safe aviation services.
' Our safety record is great. Our reliability is great, and that's the kind of tradition we expect to continue the service we want to offer our friends from Burkina Faso, ' he said.
Togbe Afede also linked the new route to a broader vision of reconnecting the Sahel region with the rest of the continent.
'Hopefully, through them, we'll link all of the Sahel to the rest of Africa, in line with President John Mahama's vision of bringing Burkina Faso and Niger back into the fold.'
Addressing public concern over high airfares, he noted that while the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi could eventually lead to lower prices, the impact would take time due to legacy costs.
' Yes, prices will go down, but it takes time. Many of our costs were based on the old exchange rate, and we continue to meet obligations priced at those earlier levels. But I want to assure our customers that AWA is committed to value, service, and most importantly, safety, ' he said.
From Burkina Faso, Karim Tapsoba, speaking on behalf of the Director General of Civil Aviation, hailed the new route as a critical development in West African air transport.
' It marks an important stage in the development of air transport in our sub-region. I am convinced that AWA will contribute to enhancing our aviation network and strengthening economic and tourism ties between the two countries. '
New Air route strengthens regional integration
The launch comes amid broader regional integration efforts, including AfCFTA and ECOWAS initiatives. Earlier this year, Ghana's President John Mahama hosted leaders from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in Accra for ECOWAS' 50th anniversary.
In March, Mahama also made his first official visit to Mali, meeting with General Assimi Goïta, Mali's transitional president and current chairman of the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS).
With the launch of the Accra–Ouagadougou route, AWA joins a small group of carriers offering regular commercial flights between the two countries, opening new channels for trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations across West Africa.

Egypt secures over $900 million in debt swap deals with Germany, Italy and China

Egypt is strategically leveraging debt swap agreements to alleviate its debt burden and unlock development financing, amid growing calls for global financial system reform. Egypt utilizes debt swap agreements to reduce financial strains and boost development financing. Notable deals include partnerships with Germany, Italy, and China, totaling over $900 million. Challenges like increased external debt and debt servicing costs underlined the need for global reforms. According to the country's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt has signed debt swap deals worth over $900 million with Germany and Italy. Additionally, the country has finalized a pioneering debt swap agreement with China, with the sole purpose of easing the country's financial pressures and supporting its development goals. Al-Mashat made the announcement during a high-level session at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Spain. The session highlighted the pressing fiscal challenges facing low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Africa. Quoting new figures, Al-Mashat revealed that external debt among these countries increased to $8.8 trillion as of 2023. Consequently, debt servicing costs have surged to $1.4 trillion almost double what they were a decade ago. ' Over 60 percent of low-income countries are now in or near debt distress,' she warned, stressing that without immediate policy shifts, global public debt could rise above 100 percent of GDP by 2030. For many African nations, whose economies are already stretched thin by climate shocks, currency depreciation, and external borrowing costs, she said the figures reflect an urgent need for reform. Egypt seeks improved financing standards The Minister further urged the international community to embrace more adaptable and transparent financing mechanisms. She proposed responsible lending standards, the automatic suspension of debt during crises, and a global platform for sharing expertise on innovative financing instruments like debt swaps. She also pressed multilateral development banks to scale up the use of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), blended finance, and liquidity tools to support countries tackling climate change and development goals. Egypt's approach could serve as a blueprint for other African nations seeking relief from unsustainable debt while pursuing long-term growth. As global financial talks continue, Cairo's bold strategy underscores the potential of innovation in rewriting Africa's debt narrative.

Kenya strikes deal to safeguard $2bn in foreign inflows

Kenya has finalized a landmark agreement aimed at shielding over Ksh260 billion ($2 billion) in foreign investments from political and economic uncertainties, days after nationwide protests raised concerns over the country's investment climate. Kenya has secured an agreement aimed at protecting $2 billion in foreign investments through collaboration with Africa Specialty Risks (ASR). This initiative intends to lower costs of capital, expedite agreements, and unlock funding across sectors like infrastructure, energy, and trade. Additional agreements were signed, bolstering Kenya's aims in healthcare, infrastructure, and sustainable finance The deal was signed between the Nairobi International Financial Centre Authority (NIFCA), under the National Treasury, and Africa Specialty Risks (ASR), a global underwriter known for its access to AA-rated international reinsurance capacity. The signing occurred during the Africa Debate Forum in London, with NIFCA CEO Daniel Mainda and ASR's Chief Distribution Officer Amit Khilosia formalizing the pact. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and Industry CS Lee Kinyanjui were present as official witnesses, signaling strong government backing. Through this agreement, ASR will offer de-risking support for projects worth up to Ksh260 billion across Kenya. The support is expected to reduce the cost of capital, fast-track deal execution, and unlock funding for key sectors such as infrastructure, logistics, energy, and trade. The initiative is a response to concerns over political, regulatory, and economic volatility that have kept some investors on the sidelines. Kenya acts to curb protest shocks In the wake of nationwide protests that shook investor confidence and highlighted deep public dissatisfaction, this move was undertaken as a strategic effort to restore stability, reassure foreign investors, and reinforce Kenya's commitment to a secure and predictable investment climate. Beyond foreign direct investment, the agreement is expected to spark growth in Kenya's underdeveloped specialty insurance and reinsurance markets and provide macroeconomic support during times of disruption or shock. This approach to large-scale de-risking is rare in African markets and puts Nairobi among a small group of cities proactively reducing barriers to investment. Kenya also signed additional agreements during the forum, including one with Bupa Group to support healthcare investment and another with the Africa Finance Corporation to promote infrastructure and green finance. This aligns with Kenya's long-term sustainability objectives and regional development strategy, further positioning the country as a hub for future-focused investment. According to the Treasury, these developments mark a new chapter for Kenya's financial services sector, unlocking capital flows into reinsurance, healthcare, infrastructure, and sustainable finance.

U.S. firm to build $1.5B power line linking Angola, DRC

U.S.-based energy company HYDRO-LINK has announced plans to construct a 1,150-kilometre electricity transmission line connecting Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in a step toward regional energy integration. HYDRO-LINK announced plans to construct a 1,150 km electricity transmission line between Angola and the DRC. The $1.5 billion project aims to alleviate power shortages in the DRC's Copperbelt mining region. The project is expected to be completed by 2029, also creating regional industrial and employment opportunities. The project, valued at $1.5 billion, addresses persistent power shortages in the DRC's southeastern Copperbelt region, which hosts critical mineral mines. With Angola enjoying a surplus of energy at its hydropower sites, the line will connect those sites to the DRC's energy-hungry mining areas. According to HYDRO-LINK, the transmission line is scheduled for completion by 2029. While it is primarily designed to power mining operations, the line will also connect to load centres in both Angola and the DRC, supplying much-needed electricity for public use. 'The transmission line will promote regional energy integration, provide energy security to the DRC, support the development of industrial hubs for local manufacturing and mineral processing, and create thousands of local construction jobs,' said Paul Hinks, CEO and Chairman of HYDRO-LINK. The project has taken a major step forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Angola. HYDRO-LINK also signed an MoU with the Swiss-based Mitrelli Group, which joins as a major investor and partner, and another with U.S.-based Sargent & Lundy, which will provide engineering services for the project. All three agreements were signed in Luanda during the U.S.-Africa Business Summit. According to HYDRO-LINK, the project will serve African and American strategic interests. Other strategic project partners HYDRO-LINK signed a memorandum of understanding with the Swiss-based Mitrelli Group, which has decades of operational experience in Angola and joins the project as a major investor and partner. Additionally, the company formalized an agreement with Sargent & Lundy, a U.S.-based architecture, engineering, and design firm, which will provide engineering services for the transmission line.
