Abu Dhabi is building the world's first AI city and it's going to be your new best friend

You've heard of smart cities. Now meet the genius one. Abu Dhabi is about to launch Aion Sentia, the world's first cognitive AI city and it's being designed to literally think for you.
Set for completion in 2027, this futuristic hub is more than just high-speed WiFi and electric buses. It's a place where the walls, streets and systems will learn from you, anticipate your needs and adapt in real-time. Your daily latte? Already ordered. Forgot your anniversary? Not only will the city remember it – it'll book the restaurant, too.
At the heart of it all is MAIA,a first-of-its-kind AI app that connects you with everything – public transport, healthcare, utilities, even dinner reservations – all while learning your quirks, preferences and routines. Quirky? Maybe. Convenient? Extremely.
Aion Sentia is the brainchild of My Aion Inc., an Italian AI firm teaming up with Bold Technologies, part of Bold Holding. The whole thing is backed by a whopping Dhs9 billion BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) agreement, meaning it's not just a cool concept – it's actually happening.
But what makes this different from other 'smart city' promises? Instead of bouncing between disconnected apps, Aion Sentia works like one seamless digital brain. Want to reduce your energy bill? Ask MAIA. Need a doctor's appointment? She's on it. Emergency in your building? MAIA will alert the right authorities – without you even needing to dial.
This isn't just a boost for convenience – it's a bold leap for the UAE's AI ambitions. The project will create jobs, fuel homegrown tech innovation and even partner with local universities to train the next generation of digital minds.
Where will it land first? Naturally, in Abu Dhabi – where innovation is already woven into the city's DNA. But the goal is global expansion.
Daniele Marinelli, CEO of My Aion Inc. said: 'This city will not just be smart; it will be cognitive — learning and evolving with its residents.'

New banking rule coming to the UAE: Banks to switch from OTPs to in-app authentication

Banks in the United Arab Emirates are phasing out one-time passwords sent via texts and email as early as this week. The shift in digital banking security will begin on Friday July 25 and is being gradually rolled out by the Central Bank of the UAE. Instead of those OTP texts and emails you get sent prior to making a big purchase, you'll soon need to authenticate transactions with greater security via your bank's mobile app. OTPs are security codes that are valid for only one login attempt or transaction and are typically used for digital payments – including online shopping or QR-code purchases when you're dining out. The switch will not happen overnight and is expected to be fully in place by all banks March 2026. A CBUAE spokesperson explained to Gulf News that customers will complete online transactions easily by selecting the Authentication via App feature. The spokesperson said: 'As per the directives issued by the UAE Central Bank, the practice of receiving OTPs via SMS or email will be phased out. 'Customers can now complete online transactions easily by selecting the 'Authentication via App' feature in their bank's smart application.' The switch from OTPs to in-app authentication should provide more security for payments in the UAE. Banks are urging customers to update their apps and start favouring in-app authentication instead. With more payments being made digitally in Abu Dhabi, even when you're out and about, the switch means you'll need to make sure your phone is charged at all times to authenticate those big bills. Many of the best restaurants in Abu Dhabi will now ask you to pay after scanning a QR code. Euro zone yields set for third daily rise, bets wane on ECB cuts

LONDON - Euro zone government bonds headed for a third daily rise on Friday, as investors lost some conviction in the European Central Bank cutting interest rates much further, while growing chances of a U.S. trade deal drew cash out of safe haven assets. The ECB left interest rates at 2% on Thursday, as expected, and President Christine Lagarde suggested policymakers were less concerned about an abrupt slowdown in growth and inflation over the coming year. Bond yields rose sharply in response. Two-year German Schatz yields, which rose by nearly 12 basis points on Thursday in their biggest one-day increase since mid-May, were up 2.3 bps at 1.934%. Benchmark 10-year German yields were up 3.3 bps to 2.726%, while Italian yields rose nearly 5 bps to 3.613%, leaving the gap between the two at 88.4 bps, its highest in a week. Money markets show traders are undecided about another ECB rate cut this year, attaching about a 30% chance of a drop below 2% by the end of December. (Reporting by Amanda Cooper. The record was just broken for the most expensive home ever sold in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is no stranger to luxury real estate milestones, but this one just raised the bar. Again. A jaw-dropping Dhs400 million has just been paid for a beachfront mansion on Saadiyat Island – officially making it the most expensive home ever sold in the capital. The record-breaking property is part of Faya Al Saadiyat, an ultra-luxury development by Aldar and it's anything but ordinary. It has eight bedrooms, direct access to Saadiyat's pristine shoreline, a private car gallery, a golf simulator, an in-house cinema and wellness suites that could rival a five-star spa. Yeah, wow. Set within the award-winning Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and designed in collaboration with internationally acclaimed studios 1508 London and Nordic Office Architects, this mansion blends minimalist elegance with full-blown extravagance. With Italian-made kitchens, custom joinery and uninterrupted 360-degree views of the sea and greenery – no detail has been spared. The sale reflects more than just luxury living; it's a clear sign that Abu Dhabi's high-end property market is on fire. With Saadiyat Island drawing buyers from around the world – Russia, France, the UK, China, the US – this beachside address has cemented itself as the city's most coveted postcode. In the first half of 2025 alone, Aldar saw Dhs5 billion in sales on Saadiyat, with expats making up a staggering 86 percent of buyers. Faya Al Saadiyat itself is an exclusive gated enclave of just 21 villas, two of which are eight-bedroom mansions like this one, with the rest ranging from six to seven bedrooms. So if you've got a few hundred million to spare and a soft spot for uninterrupted sea views, it's clear where the city's luxury compass is pointing: Saadiyat Island, again.
