Key LSU baseball pitcher goes undrafted, likely to return to LSU
The news points to a return to Baton Rouge for the right-hander, who completed his first year with the Tigers in 2025. Cowan developed into one of the most dependable relievers for head coach Jay Johnson.
Cowan brought experience as a starter to LSU following two seasons at Wofford. He'll be one of multiple candidates for a starting spot following the departure of aces Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson. Chase Shores was selected as well and will sign with the Angels.
While he boasted the best ERA in the SEC for most of the regular season, Cowan struggled down the stretch before coming up clutch in the College World Series. Cowan's last appearance was a start against Arkansas, where he went 5.1 innings and surrendered just one run while striking out six.
Getting Cowan back for another year is big for the Tigers as they rebuild their pitching staff. He'll certainly contend for a starting spot after a phenomenal regular season, which led Johnson to calling him "the best reliever in college baseball."
If Cowan's CWS outing vs. Arkansas was a sign of things to come, the Tigers should feel good about Cowan's 2026.

ATLANTA — The opening day of SEC football media days featured LSU, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. LSU quarterbacks have a history of taking an impressive jump from year one to two. Before spearheading two of the NFL's most dominant offenses, Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow came into their own during their second seasons in Baton Rouge. Is it Nussmeier's turnn? Advertisement Nussmeier finished the 2024 season with a 64.2 completion percentage and 4,052 passing yards for 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Limiting turnovers is a big point of emphasis for Nussmeier approaching his final season at LSU. 'There's no hiding from turnovers,' Nussmeier said. 'As an anticipation player, there's going to be some interceptions. Lane Kiffin's Rebels went 21-5 over the last two seasons with Jaxson Dart under center. Now the offense belongs in the hands of redshirt sophomore Austin Simmons. Advertisement Simmons appeared in nine games last season mostly late in blowouts, but he did lead one touchdown drive against Georgia when Dart briefly went out injured. He was not a full-time football player until this year, also playing with Ole Miss baseball in the spring before transitioning to football full-time.
