Jaouadi pushes through pain for second World Championship gold
SINGAPORE : Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi added the 1,500m freestyle world title to his 800m crown today for a Singapore double, with two-time Olympic champion Bobby Finke only third.
Jaouadi won a thriller to grab gold in 14:34.41s, ahead of Germany's Sven Schwarz (14:35.69s) and the American world record holder Finke (14:36.60s).
With three laps to go in the gruelling long-distance race, it was a three-way tussle between Jaouadi, Schwarz and Finke.
Jaouadi timed it to perfection, leading at the bell from the German and holding him off in the final lap.
'A lot of pain, a lot of struggle. I knew that everyone is struggling and everyone is feeling the pain,' said the Tunisian.
'I wasn't the only one. I just tried to be the strongest one mentally. It was a good one because all of the boys swam a good race and everyone tried to win it.
'Through my body it was a lot of pain, it hurts. But through my mind was I want this medal, I want to win it. It's as simple as that.'
Jaouadi's 800m free title earlier in the week was his first major crown.
Finke is the two-time reigning Olympic champion in the 1,500m and world record holder following his 14:30.67s in Paris a year ago.
Jaouadi was sixth in the French capital.

PARIS, Aug 5 — Three River Seine swimming sites in Paris have welcomed more than 35,000 people since their opening in early July, despite persistent summer rains, city hall said today. The River Seine reopened to swimmers last month, marking the first time since 1923 that bathers could take a dip in the iconic waterway following a years-long cleanup effort. In July, wet weather forced the closure of the three swimming zones across the capital — including one just steps away from the Eiffel Tower — for 13 days. 'We knew that the weather would be a variable factor,' said city official Pierre Rabadan, adding that it 'rained quite a lot in July'. 'But we are extremely satisfied,' he said. On rainy days, the mid-19th-century Parisian sewage system often overflows, causing rain and wastewater to pour into the river. A retention basin designed to contain this excess runoff has not spilled over into the Seine during the summer months, Rabadan said. Rainfall forced the swimming sites to shut down just one day after the river's triumphant reopening in early July, which drew crowds eager to take a dip in the Seine for the first time in a century. The wet weather has not dampened that enthusiasm, with a record 5,700 people taking a dip in the waterway on July 13. 'There are regulars who are eagerly awaiting the opening, those who go running and then swim, families, but also tourists,' Rabadan said. The seasonal opening of the Seine for swimming is seen as a key legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympics, when open-water swimmers and triathletes competed in its waters, which were specially cleaned for the event. Ahead of the Olympic Games, authorities invested approximately 1.4 billion euros (RM6.76 billion) in improving the Seine's water quality. Frank Mill, 1990 World Cup winner, dies aged 67
BERLIN, Aug 5 — Frank Mill, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, has died aged 67, his former clubs Fortuna Duesseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed today. Mill, who also won a bronze medal with West Germany at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and a German Cup with Borussia Dortmund, passed away from the effects of a severe heart attack suffered in May. He played 17 times for West Germany and was part of the 1990 World Cup squad, although he did not play in the tournament in Italy. In a statement, hometown club Essen called Mill 'a legend' and 'an ambassador for football across the country'. Mill is the second member of the 1990 World Cup squad to pass away after Andreas Brehme, who scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina. — AFP

Schick extends Bayer Leverkusen contract until 2030

(EPA Images pic) MUNICH : Czech striker Patrik Schick has extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen through to 2030, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday. 'Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czech international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030,' the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Since joining the Werkself in 2020, Schick has netted 81 times in 168 appearances in all competitions, as well as laying on 12 assists. Under the tutelage of now-departed coach Xabi Alonso, Schick contributed vital goals on numerous occasions as Leverkusen became the first club to win the Bundesliga without losing a match. He also lifted the German Cup and German Super Cup in 2024. 'I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies,' said Schick. The forward's decision to extend his contract bucks the trend of departures this summer from the Bundesliga runners-up. Alonso left to coach Real Madrid and has been followed out the door by star playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah. 'With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrik as a motor of development,' said managing director of sport Simon Rolfes.
