Windy City Smokeout 2025 opens this week, the annual double bill of barbecue and country music

Chicago Tribune2 days ago
It's no secret that country music is booming, what with streaming services like Spotify reporting triple-digit increases in listenership in the last five years, Gen Z fans adding their numbers and major artists like Beyoncé jumping on the bandwagon — Beyoncé was recently in Chicago on her 'Cowboy Carter' tour. Amidst all that, traditional country still holds center stage — the legendary George Strait broke records last summer for the most tickets sold at a U.S. concert, with more than 110,000 at Texas A&M.
Country music also has long had a strong following in Chicago — and if you had to pick a flagship annual country music event, that would be Windy City Smokeout.
The annual four-day music festival is coming this week to the grounds outside the United Center, where it's been held since 2019, produced by Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants. Along with music headliners like Jon Pardi, Bailey Zimmerman and Kane Brown, the main attraction is the food by 20-plus barbecue pit masters from Chicago and around the country. Windy City Smokeout 2025 is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees per day.
Thursday, July 10: Bailey Zimmerman, Koe Wetzel, DJ Sommer Ray, Shane Smith & The Saints, Bayker Blankenship, Angel White
Friday, July 11: Old Dominion, Dylan Gossett, Josh Meloy, Lauren Watkins, Maggie Antone
Saturday, July 12: Kane Brown, Megan Moroney, Charles Wesley Godwin, Austin Snell, Kashus Culpepper
Sunday, July 13: Jon Pardi, Riley Green, Ella Langley, Sam Barber, Josh Ross
Pitmasters and restaurants represented from Chicago include Green Street Smoked Meats, Soul & Smike, Bub City, Barry Sorkin of Smoque BBQ, Dominique Leach of Lexington Betty Smokehouse, Chicago Q and Chef Art Smith's Reunion.
Other regional barbecue includes Texas and Kansas City styles and barbecue from the Southwest. Other vendors offer alternatives such as pizza, salads and other cuisines. General admission tickets do not include the price of food.
The Sunday BBQ Brunch (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 13; sold out) is presented by Illinois Pork Producers Association with dishes from pitmasters, a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, bottomless mimosas and live acoustic music.

Raphael Saadiq adds S.F. date to extended run of solo shows

Just a month after finishing his sold-out tour with back-to-back hometown performances in Oakland, Raphael Saadiq is ready to hit the road again — this time with 22 more cities on the itinerary. The East Bay R&B legend brought his 'No Bandwidth: One Man, One Night, Three Decades of Hits' to only four cities this spring. A departure from his full-band concerts, the shows were story-driven affairs that took audiences back to his days as a boy at Elmhurst Middle School as well as behind-the-scenes as a hitmaker for award-winning artists like Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé — all between performances of fan favorites like the Toni! Tony! Toné! classic 'Anniversary' and Lucy Pearls' 'Dance Tonight.' Saadiq's newly announced set of shows is expected to maintain that same conversational tone. Beginning on Sept. 7 at Sacramento's Channel 24, with a concert at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall to follow on Sept. 8, the tour concludes on Oct. 14 at the Laura Turner Concert Hall in the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. Ticket presales begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, while the general sale starts at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11. His upcoming performance in San Francisco will mark Saadiq's third Bay Area appearance this year. He was also a special musical guest at the 2025 NBA All-Star Game at Chase Center in February. 'My sound has been shaped by the Bay from day one,' Saadiq told the Chronicle ahead of his televised performance at the game. 'Growing up in East Oakland, when I walked outside, there was always somebody in their garage playing. It just informed me to perform at levels of excellence.' A landmark year for the artist, Saadiq received his third Grammy Award that same month for his contributions to Beyoncé's ' Cowboy Carter,' which won album of the year. He also helped to pen the track 'I Lied To You,' featured in fellow Oakland native Ryan Coogler 's hit film ' Sinners,' which hit streaming service Max last week.

Hats Are a Thing in 2025, and Ukrainian Milliner Ruslan Baginskiy Is a Big Reason Why

Happy 10th anniversary, Ruslan Baginskiy! A decade in business is a significant milestone by any measure, but even more so when, for the past three years, this Kyiv-based brand has been relentlessly and resiliently growing—from creative to commercial, production to distribution—despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Today, the label behind hats donned by Beyoncé, Madonna, and scores of other boldface names, will unveil an impressive takeover at Galeries Lafayette that includes all 12 windows facing out to Boulevard Haussmann, a pop-up at the store's entrance and a larger shop-in-shop under the historic cupola. With 'Ruslan Baginskiy Tales,' each window presents a joyful, whimsical vignette illustrating how these hats and assorted accessories encompass a larger narrative that bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary culture. In one, there are tall bundles of straw juxtaposed with videos of artisans weaving and forming the hats; in another, playful, color-blocked bodies nod to Kazimir Malevich. There are surrealist hats at gargantuan scale, an oversized baker boy cap—the brand's hero item—and images from various campaigns shot along the coastline of Odesa or in the Carpathian mountains offering serene glimpses of home. Baginskiy often says that his hats—whether the woven fedoras and canotiers, hand-dyed baseball caps and beanies, denim berets, or myriad other styles—function as a kind of voice out to the wider world. 'We need to do our best job to show the creativity and the culture of Ukraine,' says Baginskiy, who was named a cultural ambassador in 2023 by Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 'So this is super important for us right now.' The brand has a few other central figures including co-founder Petro Yaskinsky, Victoria Semerei who oversees the commercial side of things, and Anastasia Padalka, who handles communications. His mother Lilia Baginska has been on board since early on and is currently head of production in Ukraine. Each time the team arrives in Paris, as they have for the opening (the activation runs through August 25), they shrug off the extended travel and logistical challenges. It was a true wonder, though, that a freight truck with all the materials made it. 'Ten years, it's like this; every delivery is a miracle,' says Padalka. While the war continues and Baginskiy could recount stories upon stories about all the ways his team, his loved ones, and his business have been impacted, it feels as though this is a moment for celebration.

John Summit announces NYC Experts Only Festival lineup: See Kaskade, Cassian

Vivid Seats is the New York Post's official ticketing partner. We may receive revenue from this partnership for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. Featured pricing is subject to change. The last weekend of the summer just got a lot more interesting. John Summit announced dropped the news that he's bringing his inaugural, self-curated Experts Only Festival to New York City's Randall's Island on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21. Notable names joining Summit on the lineup include Kaskade performing B2B with Cassian, Green Velvet alongside Layton Giordani and LP Giobbi. DJ Seinfeld, Pete Tong, Kasablanca, AYYBO and TEED round out the party-starting bill. In total, 19 artists are booked as of now with more to be announced for the 'Gen Z cultural moment of the year' at a later date. 'This one's been years in the making so we knew we had to go all out for u guys,' Summit shared via Instagram. Experts Only fills the EDM festival-sized hole left by Electric Zoo; the popular festival mysteriously disappeared after the 2023 event was plagued with issues — including but not limited to 'supply chain disruptions,' 'police blocking traffic,' full-day cancellations and threats of lawsuits to name just a few — and resulted in refunds for paying customers. Although they never officially called it quits, their Instagram has been inactive for over a year. Their last words on the social media platform were 'We know we let you down. As we continue forward, we will work every day to earn back your trust and forgiveness.' Ravers, clubbers, bassheads and more can purchase tickets for the first Experts Only Festival on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, July 11. Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand. They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.
