Life behind bars
Convicts, unless exempted for health reasons, begin their day at 6.30am. After basic routine, breakfast is served. "It's a rotating menu through the week: veg pulao on Sunday, tomato bath on Monday, chitranna on Tuesday, poha on Wednesday, puliyogare on Thursday, upma on Friday, and vangibhath on Saturday," a source said.
Lunch is served between 11.30am and noon, and all inmates must return to their barracks by 6.30pm. Both lunch and dinner consist of chapatis, ragi balls, sambar, white rice, and buttermilk. Tuesdays, convicts receive an egg. Mutton is served on the first and third Friday of every month, and chicken on the second and fourth Saturday.
Prajwal, like others, will be allowed to make two phone calls a week, each lasting a maximum of 10 minutes.
He can also meet family or friends once a week, as per prison visitation rules.
Wage arrears hit convicts
While Prajwal awaits his job assignment, thousands of other convicts already at work have not been paid for over a year. "Across the state, more than 1,500 convicts are engaged in various tasks, but their wages — amounting to about Rs 3 crore — are pending," a source in the prison department said.
The state has around 14,500 inmates spread across eight central prisons and several district jails. However, only up to 15% of them can be assigned work under existing rules. "The govt has assured us that the dues will be released soon," the official added.

Bhopal: A doctor residing in the Chunabhatti area was allegedly duped of Rs10 lakh by a Mumbai-based man and his associates, who promised him an entry into a popular Bollywood actor-hosted reality TV game show. Acting on the complaint, Chunabhatti police reare preparing to send a team to Mumbai for their arrest. Investigation officer SI Uday Sisode said that Dr Abhineet Gupta, the complainant who runs his own clinic in Chunabhatti, came in contact with the accused, Karan Singh, through a mutual friend in 2022. Karan, who operates an event organising and management business in Mumbai, claimed to have strong connections in the television industry. He assured Dr Gupta that he could get him an entry into a high-profile reality TV game show, hosted by a Bollywood actor. Karan allegedly told Dr Gupta that the process would involve expenses of around Rs 50 lakh. Eager to participate in the show, Dr Gupta agreed. Karan even took him to an office where officials explained the formal application process for the show. However, Karan demanded Rs 10 lakh in advance to "facilitate" the selection process. Dr Gupta paid the amount, but his name did not appear in the list of selected participants that season. Upon inquiry, Karan assured him that his selection was confirmed for the next season. However, when the next season also passed without any progress, Dr Gupta tried to contact the show organisers directly and discovered that there is no such practice of accepting money for entry into the show. When Dr Gupta demanded his money back, Karan initially gave excuses and later outright refused to return the amount. Realising he was duped, Dr Gupta lodged a complaint with Chunabhatti police. After preliminary investigation, the police registered a case of cheating, cops said.

‘Penalty for power theft unfairly high & out of reach too'
Bhopal: In a rare occasion, the Opposition Congress joined hands with the ruling BJP MLAs in the House on Monday, demanding that the penalty in power theft cases be reduced. Raising the issue through a call attention motion, Ramesh Khatik of the BJP said that a compound interest of 16 percent is charged on a person accused of electricity theft. If the accused person pays the electricity bill five years later, he ends up paying more than double the bill. The case is put up in court and in Lok Adalats, the penalty is waived. Khatik questioned why the penalty can't be waived in the normal course if the person charged with electricity theft fails to turn up in Lok Adalat to settle the case for some reason. Khatik, who said that farmers and domestic consumers are the worst affected due to the excessive penalty of 16 percent compound interest on the bill, noted that no bank or financial institution gives so much interest as recovered from the consumers. He further mentioned that consumers, particularly farmers, often come to know of the case registered against them for electricity theft and put up in court quite late, and they sometimes don't receive notice for the Lok Adalat either, he added. Several MLAs from both sides joined Khatik in demanding that the penalty imposed on the bill in cases of electricity theft should be waived. Khatik, however, pointed out that the Lok Adalat takes place in Bhopal, and the cases at other places are settled online, which may not be convenient for many consumers, particularly farmers. The Electricity Regulatory Authority may also be informed about the debate in the House and asked to reconsider the provision of a hefty penalty on electricity theft cases. The minister, while maintaining that law is law, agreed to take up the issue with MP Electricity Authority as more and more members from both sides joined Khatik in support of his demand.
