French cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt clinched victory in the women's Tour de France on her first attempt on Sunday, launching an attack at the final stage to increase her overnight lead. The 33-year-old finished 3:42 ahead of 2023 champion Demi Vollering from the Netherlands and 4:09 clear of the defending champion, Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma. 'After my Olympic title, I said I would try to win the Tour de France in the next three years,' said Ferrand-Prévôt, who won gold in mountain biking at last year's Paris Games. 'So here I am, the first (time).' 'My teammates worked super hard for me all week long. Ferrand-Prévôt seized control of the race with a solo breakaway on the last climb of Saturday's eight and penultimate stage. That gave her an overnight lead of 2:37 over Australian rider Sarah Gigante and 3:18 over Vollering. Sunday saw the racers undertake a 124-kilometre trek from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel with three big mountain climbs. Unlike last year's race, which was decided by just four seconds in the closest finish in the history of both the women's and men's tours, Ferrand-Prévôt faced less drama. She did not face any big attacks and instead launched one of her own with six kilometres remaining in the Tour. Roared on by roadside crowds, she soloed to the finish before collapsing to the ground, exhausted but elated. Vollering was 20 seconds behind in second place and Niewiadoma followed in third place as they sprinted to the line. Having won Olympic gold and conquered the cobblestones of the Paris-Roubaix Classic, Ferrand-Prévôt added another line to her glittering resumé with a Tour victory, 11 years after winning the world road race title.

Chelsea sign Dutch defender Hato from Ajax
Hato, who has been capped six times, agreed a seven-year contract with the Premier League club. The 19-year-old is Chelsea's eighth signing since the end of last season as boss Enzo Maresca strengths his squad to cope with the duel demands of the Premier League and Champions League this term. "I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here," said Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back. "I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy." Hato joined Ajax's academy from hometown club Sparta Rotterdam in 2018 and signed his first professional contract aged 16 four years later. He scored four goals in 111 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, with his international debut coming as a substitute against Gibraltar in 2023. Club World Cup champions Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17. The Blues had signed Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez prior to landing Hato.

French cyclist Ferrand-Prévot wins Tour de France Femmes
French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévot soloed to victory on Sunday, August 3 in stage nine in the Alps to seal the women's Tour de France title. Olympic mountain bike champion Ferrand-Prévot of Visma, who joined the road racing scene last year, took the overall title by a 3min 42sec margin over Dutch rider Demi Vollering. Last year's winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland finished third overall at 4min 09sec. The 33-year-old Ferrand-Prévot said she had achieved "the goal of (her) life as an athlete" after sealing victory in the mountains on the border with Switzerland. She adds to her 15 world titles in several cycling disciplines including mountain biking, cyclo-cross and road racing. She becomes the first French rider to win the modern women's Tour de France, in its fourth edition. Jeannie Longo won the title 36 years ago in the former race, the Tour de France Feminin. This season, after seven years devoted primarily to mountain biking, she won the women's edition of Paris-Roubaix before focusing on preparing for the Tour. "It was so difficult (this stage). I wanted to win here in the yellow jersey. It's a dream," she said.
