Lion population grows to 891 in Gujarat

Time of India21-05-2025
In a happy news for the Asiatic lion enthusiasts, the population of lions in
Gujarat
have grown from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025.
The recently concluded 16th line census included 196 males, 330 females, and a significant number of cubs and sub-adults, which came as a major the success for the ongoing conservation initiatives.
The details of the lion census was shared by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel here on Wednesday.
For the records, conducted between May 10–13, the latest lion census covered 35,000 sq. km across 11 districts and 58 talukas, utilizing the Block Count (Direct Beat Verification) method. A total of 3,854 individuals, including forest staff, local sarpanches, villagers, and community leaders, actively participated in this large-scale wildlife monitoring effort.
The process entailed extensive technological support, that rendered more accuracy and precision. According to the state government, apart from usual digital cameras, camera traps, and radio collars, e-GujForest mobile app allowed real-time entry of lion sightings, complete with GPS coordinates and photos, making data collection faster and more precise. To better understand lion habitats and how the animals are spreading across regions, officials used GIS mapping tools. In addition, AI-powered software helped identify individual lions from the images, adding another layer of accuracy to the process.
It may be mentioned here that Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
has been taking keen interest in lion conservation since he was the Chief Minister of the state. In march this year while announcing the 16th lion census, Modi had announced that lion conservation in Barda will be supported through prey augmentation and other habitat improvement efforts since the Asiatic Lions have now made
Barda Wildlife Sanctuary
their home through natural dispersal.

Rajya Sabha to hold debate on 'Op Sindoor' today; PM Modi likely to participate

New Delhi: A comprehensive discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' is scheduled to begin in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as part of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. There is also anticipation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may participate during the course of the discussion, underlining the significance the government places on national security. Key ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, are expected to participate in the debate, which aims to highlight the strategic and diplomatic dimensions of India's recent counter-terror operation. The debate follows an intense discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday, where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered the opening remarks and issued a stern warning to Pakistan. He stated that India would not hesitate to resume strikes if provoked again. 'Let this be a clear message to those who support terror. India will respond decisively to any act of aggression,' Singh said, drawing loud applause from the treasury benches. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India's military response to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, J&K, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, including many tourists. The operation was a joint effort by the Indian Army, Air Force, and intelligence agencies, aimed at dismantling cross-border terror infrastructure. According to Singh's statement in the Lok Sabha, the Indian armed forces eliminated over 100 terrorists during the operation. Nine terror infrastructure targets across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were destroyed through precision strikes. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the House, highlighting the diplomatic efforts that ensured international support and understanding for India's actions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the speeches of both Singh and Jaishankar, calling them 'insightful' and commending the courage and professionalism of the Indian armed forces. 'Their remarks reflect the strength and determination of New India,' PM Modi said. As the Rajya Sabha prepares to take up the issue, the discussion is expected to shed further light on the execution and impact of Operation Sindoor.

PM Modi, Amit Shah to address Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor today

As the Parliament continues its discussion on Operation Sindoor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to deliver his speech in the evening, according to a government source. The source said that Home Minister Amit Shah will address the Lok Sabha between 12:00 to 1:00 pm on Tuesday. The Lok Sabha on Monday afternoon began discussion on 'India's strong, successful and decisive Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The debate was initiated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Defence Minister, while speaking in the Lower House, said, "The objective of Operation Sindoor was not to cross the border or capture the territory, it was to eliminate terror nurseries which Pakistan had nurtured for years, and provide justice to the innocent families who lost their loved ones in cross-border attacks." According to a statement from the Defence Ministry, he termed Pakistan-sponsored terrorism as not "Random Madness", but a "well-planned strategy" and a "fundamental rage", emphasising that the overall politico-military objective of Operation Sindoor was to punish Pakistan for fighting a proxy war in the form of terrorism. Singh asserted that, during Operation Sindoor, India not only demonstrated its military capability, but also its national resolve, morality and political acumen, stressing that New Delhi will give a decisive and clear answer to any terrorist attack. "Those who provide shelter and support to terrorism will not be spared. India is not going to bow down to any kind of nuclear blackmailing or other pressures," he said.
