Lulu says new memoir felt ‘intense' as she opens up about going to therapy
She told the PA news agency: 'I've just completed writing my memoir, or an autobiography, whatever you want to call it, and it's been fairly intense, because I am 76 and being in the public eye, there's a lot of things I have not divulged.
'There's a lot of things I didn't feel comfortable talking about because, as a human being, I've had trials, I've had tribulations, I've had issues.'
Her new memoir, If Only You Knew, delves into her past and the singer, born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie and also known as Lulu Kennedy-Cairns, said it has felt 'very cathartic'.
'There are things you don't know, and I'm going to talk about them, and it's really in order to help, but it's been very cathartic', she said.
'It is in order to maybe help someone else who's had a similar issue and they haven't dealt with it, or don't know how to, and I felt very alone in my head all my life, because I think I've been brought up to keep a lot of things secretive and keep it to myself, but that was my mother's (era) age.
'Today, things are more open, and if it can help, if you can relate to someone, it doesn't make you feel so alone. So that's part of the reason for doing the book.
'The other part is, I'm 76, I might not last much longer, and I've got grandchildren, and it's all documented, but it's been very cathartic for me.
'In fact, I had to go into therapy because it's been so intense. When you've kept stuff down, they (emotions) lodge in you. They lodge in your body somewhere.
'And sometimes they can affect your physical health, definitely your mental health. But to try and get them (those feelings) to come up, it's been intense.'
The music artist from Glasgow said she wanted to establish a mental heath trust as she and her family have experienced their own mental health issues.
On Monday, in aid of the trust, Lulu walked from the east London location where she filmed To Sir, With Love and finished at the old Decca Studios, where she recorded Shout – the song that saw her storm into the UK charts 60 years ago.
She has so far raised more than £15,000 for the cause through people sponsoring her for the walk.
The singer performed at Glastonbury Festival last year and embarked on her sell-out Champagne for Lulu tour, which she said was her last.
Her memoir is due to be released on September 25 2025. She will embark on a UK book tour four days later.

You don't challenge her. "If Martha is critical of Meghan, she has to sit back and take it because not only has Martha built her own brand from the ground up, she's lived through so many tough experiences." Martha didn't appear to have a problem with Gwyneth Paltrow, actress-turned-lifestyle guru, though, who launched her wellness and lifestyle brand, Goop, as a homespun weekly newsletter from her kitchen in 2008. "Gwyneth has been very successful," she said of the Goop founder. "She created quite an interesting body of businesses. She's admired. She won an Oscar for heaven's sake as an actress! She's pretty powerful." Seeming unfazed by the competition, she added: "I don't mind. Good luck." Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be about to renew their Netflix deal despite reports as the pair are said to have a key supporter at the streaming giants Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be about to make even more money next year, according to reports. However, despite their potential goldmine offer, it's thought it's not all good news for the Sussexes. Their deal with Netflix was reportedly set to come to an end after running out this year. It was said to be bagging the former Royals in the region of £75million. But after less than impressive viewing figures in return for both Meghan's With Love, Meghan series and Harry's documentary about polo, it was suggested the streaming giants were ready to go their separate ways. However, this is said to be far from the truth, with Netflix's boss Ted Sarandos still seemingly keen to work with the pair. According to Mail Online, Ted's support of Meghan can be the pair's "secret weapon". Reporter Alison Bishoff says: "There will be a third series of the Duchess's lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, if she wants to make one. And I hear she does." She claims the duo's link-up with the streamer could see them in line with the huge deal that Barack and Michelle Obama currently hold. And it was reported earlier in the month that the streaming platform has decided not to renew the contract it holds with the Sussexes once it runs out in a few months time. They are believed to have signed a five-year deal worth around $100million in September 2020. However, despite the rumours, it remains uncertain as to the pair's partnership with the company.

Step-in host Christine Lampard, 46, was chatting to LA Correspondent Ross King, 63, when the recent loss of rock legend Ozzy was brought up - and she asked the former X Factor star to get in touch with her. Black Sabbath legend Ozzy died aged 76 on 22 July 2025, and his family united in grief on Wednesday to celebrate his life at an emotional procession in the late singer's home city of Birmingham. Christine said to Ross: 'Lulu, yes, another music legend, of course, is with us this morning... 'Lulu, you were friends...' 'I want to say, Sharon...' Lulu replied. 'I know you won't be watching but if anyone is watching, Melinda, can you call me? 'I know they're busy but I want to get hold of you guys because I really, really want to be there to support Sharon.' Christine paused and then replied: 'Yeah, exactly. A very, very, tough time. 'But again Lulu, incredible that he did what he did in the past.' Lulu replied: 'Unbelievable!' The Black Sabbath frontman, who died last week aged 76, was commemorated in a parade through his hometown - with his family pausing at Black Sabbath Bridge to an outpouring of love from the crowd. Sharon and Ozzy's children Jack, Kelly and Aimee laid their own floral tributes at the site - and made a peace sign as they gestured their gratitude to fans - while accompanied by Ozzy's son Louis from his first marriage to Thelma Riley. The funeral cortege was led by a live brass band, Bostin' Brass, who performed versions of Black Sabbath songs such as Iron Man, as thousands of tearful devotees lined the streets and sang along in Ozzy's memory. Huge crowds gathered along the route hours in advance of the 1pm start, to pay their respects to the Prince of Darkness whose hits included Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. The hearse carrying the singer's coffin - adorned with purple flowers spelling out 'Ozzy' - passed the star's childhood home in Lodge Road, Aston, shortly after midday. Flowers had been placed outside the terraced property, close to Villa Park while the owners of the house put up a picture of Osbourne in the front bay window.
