TGI Fridays hails ‘comeback' with new menu launch after UK chain rescued

Yahooa day ago
TGI Fridays has hailed a 'comeback' with a new menu and plans to revitalise restaurants after the chain secured a rescue deal last year but made a string of closures.
The US-themed restaurant and cocktail bar said it had undergone a significant transformation since being bought out of administration in October.
The comeback campaign, which bosses described as a 'full brand reset', will involve half of its dishes updated and 70% of the grill items reworked, incorporating new flavours and more customisation.
It also plans to revive the brand's 'Americana' influence and theatre theme – with some locations reintroducing photo booths and candyfloss machines.
TGI Fridays said it was launching a comeback offer to mark the relaunch and prompt more diners to come back.
Diners who order from the menu across Independence Weekend – the US holiday celebrated between July 4-6 – will receive a voucher for a free return meal, valid on weekdays for the rest of the month.
TGI Fridays first opened in New York in 1965 with a party-led theme and continues to operate a string of restaurants in the US.
After its previous UK operator fell into administration, 51 restaurants were acquired by private equity firms Breal Capital and Calveton UK.
While the deal secured a future for the chain on Britain's high streets, it led to the closure of 35 restaurants, resulting in about 1,000 staff being made redundant.
TGI said it now operates 49 restaurants and has about 2,500 members of staff.
Restructuring efforts since the takeover have resulted in a leaner and more streamlined business with a significant reduction in overhead costs, it said on Friday.
It also highlighted an improvement in sales in recent months, since the start of 2025.
Prior to the acquisition, TGI faced falling sales in the UK amid wider struggles for the casual dining sector, which has grappled with weaker consumer spending.
Julie McEwan, chief executive of TGI Fridays UK, said: 'This is an exciting moment for TGI Fridays – a full brand reset that reinforces everything people have always loved about us.
'TGI Fridays has a rich heritage of bold flavour, high-energy hospitality and unforgettable celebrations – and we've gone back to those roots to bring that magic into a new era.
'Over the past eight months, we've restructured the business, invested in our incredible team, and rebuilt our offer around quality, value and experience.'

Steve Case's Top Travel Bets: Costa Rica, Luxury Rentals, and Real Communities

AOL co-founder Steve Case says his new Waldorf Astoria resort reflects more than just a real estate play. His hope is that the future of high-end tourism lies in community connections rather than resorts that are literally walled gardens. See the Agenda and Register Steve Case's latest hospitality project debuted in April on a Costa Rican peninsula that his investment firm has owned for nearly two decades. The Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica at Punta Cacique represents more than just another luxury resort. The AOL co-founder purchased the 600-acre Punta Cacique in 2006 through Revolution Places, his hospitality investment arm. After weathering the 2008 financial crisis and years of planning, Case has opened a resort that he hopes encourages guests to venture beyond its borders into local Costa Rican communities. It's part of Case's broader vision for travel as the executive chairman of Exclusive Resorts and the owner of several hotels worldwide. "When I first visited Costa Rica, which is over 20 years ago, it kind of felt like Hawaii when I was growing up 50 or 60 years ago," Case said. "It was just pivoting from farming to tourism." Born in Honolulu just before the state's admission to the Union in 1959, Case witnessed the islands evolve from an agricultural economy to a tourism powerhouse. The key, he argues, was creating vibrant destinations. "What I think people love about going to Hawaii is they venture out of the hotel to travel, drive around the island, and stop at some local restaurant," Case explains. "They use a resort as sort of a launch pad to explore real Hawaii." Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique. Opened in April 2025, it's the first resort to open within the 600-acre P

Video of record-breaking private jet powered by Rolls-Royce engines sparks outrage: 'More toys for rich toddlers'

A new speedy private jet is set to launch in the U.S. and Europe with speeds that reach a whopping 717 miles per hour. The news was met with backlash on the subreddit r/STEW_ScTecEngWorld, as many believe more innovation on air travel should be focused on commercial airlines. The private jet is "powered by Rolls-Royce engines and featuring a sleek aerodynamic design" set to rival the fastest private jets, as the OP wrote in the caption. "More toys for rich toddlers," wrote one Redditor, who received dozens of upvotes. "How about using tech to improve air travel for [most] of the world's population?" World's first private jet that, can fly 9,000 miles at 717 mph top speed, to launch across US and Europe after breaking records byu/Zee2A inSTEW_ScTecEngWorld Indeed, the planet-harming pollution of the richest people in the world far exceeds the polluting impacts of many. It has been estimated that a private jet from London to Paris can produce six times more pollution per passenger than a commercial flight on the same route. Private jets specifically produce some 5 to 14 times more pollution per passenger than commercial flights, according to DriveElectric. Other factors, like water vapor trails, contribute to climate warming. Yet, the "global working class" has the lowest pollution and faces the worst of the climate crisis, as Oxfam explained. For some of the bottom 99% to produce as much pollution as those who frequently travel with private jets, it would take 1,500 years — highlighting the massive difference in planet-harming pollution that comes from the rich. These shocking figures are why organizations like Oxfam are urging for higher taxes on the polluting behavior of those who use private jets. Currently, most are taxed for commercial flights with the Air Passenger Duty Tax. However, this tax is placed disproportionately, as "someone flying on a commercial airline usually pays a far greater amount in tax as a portion of their ticket than a billionaire jet-setting on a private plane," explained Oxfam. Some smaller private aircraft are not even required to pay a higher rate or are exempted from the tax entirely. "I'll never be able to fly in this, and honestly, I have zero aspirations to do so," one Redditor wrote. Another wrote, "Oh cool, more technology that has no impact on anyone but the richest in the world." Do you think billionaires spend their money wisely?
