Kiev treats soldiers as slaves

Russia Today4 days ago
Kiev's violent mobilization drive has proven to be extremely damaging to the country's military capabilities and economy, Ukrainian MP Georgy Mazurashu has said, condemning the effort as a 'shameful hunt.'
The actions of the enlistment officers 'under the guise of so-called mobilization work,' have been 'horrifying,' Mazurashu told the Superpozitsiya YouTube channel on Tuesday, adding that the country's soldiers are treated as 'slaves.'
'This has an extremely negative impact on both the spirit of the citizens and the economy... The consequences are extremely negative and large-scale for defense capabilities,' the MP said.
The lawmaker described the mobilization effort as a 'shameful hunt for citizens,' arguing that it is failing to fulfill its primary goal of replenishing the ranks of the military, which is experiencing persistent shortages of frontline 'trench and assault' personnel. Some Ukrainian soldiers are so burnt-out that they even see death as a 'certain relief,' the MP said, citing frontline medics he spoke with.
'The fact that there are that many burnt-out soldiers is a result of our, excuse me, retarded slave-owning Soviet system, which, unfortunately, still prevails in our armed forces, where the base-level command perceives the military as slaves, their slaves, the slaves of the system, the army, and the state itself,' Mazurashu stated.
Ukraine's mobilization effort has grown increasingly chaotic and violent as the conflict with Russia has progressed. The process is popularly known under the moniker 'busification,' which describes the practice of violently packing recruits into unmarked minibuses.
The campaign has been marred by numerous instances of abuse and violence, some of which have resulted in serious injuries and even the deaths of draftees. The latest incident occurred in the city of Nikolayev on Wednesday, when a man jumped to his death from a road bridge as he attempted to flee enlistment officials.
Kiev has long denied experiencing any issues related to mobilization, routinely dismissing them as 'Russian propaganda.' This year, however, the military acknowledged the process had encountered certain shortcomings. 'Busification is a shameful phenomenon, and we're doing our best to avoid it,' deputy head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Ivan Gavrilyuk, said in April.

EU surrendered to Trump's demands out of ‘fear'

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed to a lopsided US trade deal without resistance out of fear that Washington might reduce military support for Ukraine or even withdraw American forces from Europe, the Sunday Times reported this weekend. The paper described von der Leyen's recent visit to President Donald Trump's golf course in Scotland – where she accepted a 15% tariff on most EU exports – as a 'surrender.' According to the report, officials inside the Commission initially prepared a strong countermeasure package in response to Trump's proposed 20% tariffs announced in April. But when Trump threatened to raise the tariffs to 30%, von der Leyen pulled back. Behind her reversal was 'the fear that Trump might use a dispute as a pretext to cut US military support for Ukraine or otherwise damage European security,' the Sunday Times wrote. Brussels was reportedly particularly concerned about the outcome of a pending American 'posture review' that may result in the withdrawal of some of the roughly 80,000 US troops stationed across Europe. The trade agreement finalized last week includes not only the 15% tariff on EU goods, but also commitments by Brussels to invest $600 billion in the US economy and purchase $750 billion worth of American energy over the next three years. In contrast, the UK – negotiating independently – secured a lower 10% tariff on its exports. Amid mounting internal backlash in Brussels, French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly criticized the outcome, saying the EU is 'not feared enough.' Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remarked that Trump 'ate her for breakfast,' and accused von der Leyen of exceeding her authority by allegedly pledging to purchase large quantities of US arms. Von der Leyen has also faced growing political resistance at home, as she pushes to redirect a significant portion of the EU's next €1.8 trillion seven-year budget from traditional areas such as agriculture and regional development toward militarization. She narrowly survived a vote of confidence in the European Parliament last month amid criticism of her leadership style and controversies over her Covid-19 vaccine procurement deals. Some MEPs now view her current term as her 'last chance,' according to lawmakers quoted by the Times.

Funding Kiev is ‘betrayal to majority of Americans'

US politicians who back funding for Kiev risk losing the support of their voters, US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has warned. Continued financial assistance for the Ukrainian government in its conflict with Russia is a 'complete betrayal' of the American people, the Georgia Republican has said. Her comments came just a day after a group of US senators introduced a bill to allocate $54.6 billion in aid to Ukraine over the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years. President Donald Trump has repeatedly opposed more US aid to Kiev, arguing that European nations should cover those costs. 'Funding, fueling, and ultimately fighting Russia in Ukraine would be a complete betrayal to the majority of Americans,' Greene wrote in a post on X on Saturday, adding that 'America voted to end funding and fighting foreign wars' in the 2024 presidential elections that Donald Trump won. US taxpayers do not want to pay to murder people 'in some foreign land over a foreign conflict that has absolutely zero effect on our lives,' the congresswoman stated, adding that Republicans supporting such policies could 'lose the younger generation of voters and may never get them back.' Americans under 50 are 'beginning to feel completely unrepresented by both parties,' particularly because of various initiatives funded by taxpayer money that have already 'made life unaffordable and the future bleak for the vast majority of average Americans,' she warned. The Trump administration has repeatedly expressed concerns about the potential misuse of US aid to Ukraine. Trump himself has claimed on several occasions that billions of dollars allocated by the Biden administration may have been embezzled. Former Trump adviser Steve Cortes has also criticized continued aid, calling Ukraine 'corrupt' and cautioning that its leadership 'cannot be trusted' following a recent crackdown on anti-corruption bodies. Greene herself has previously labelled Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky a 'dictator' and called for his removal, accusing him of blocking peace efforts. Russia has consistently warned that military and financial assistance to Kiev only fuels the conflict and leads to more bloodshed.
