The Income Tax Department on Tuesday extended the due date to file income tax returns for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) from July 31 to September 15. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the due date for filing returns 'in view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26', according to an official statement. This extension is expected to mitigate the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance, thereby ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process, the statement said.
The notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities. Furthermore, credits arising from TDS statements, due for filing by May 31, are expected to begin reflecting in early June, limiting the effective window for return filing in the absence of such extension, the statement said.
Accordingly, to facilitate a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers, it has been decided that the due date for filing of ITRs, originally due on July 31, is extended to September 15. A formal notification to this effect is being issued separately, the statement added. The CBDT has notified the income tax return forms ITR-1 and ITR-4 for the financial year 2024-25 and the assessment year 2025-26 on April 30. The returns for incomes earned during the financial year from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, have to be filed using the new forms.
A major change in the ITR forms this year is that ITR-1 (SAHAJ) can be filed for notifying long-term capital gains (LTCG) under section 112A. This is subject to the condition that the LTCG is not more than Rs 1.25 lakh, and the income tax assessee has no loss to carry forward or set off under the capital gains head.
Earlier, ITR 1 did not have a provision to report capital gains tax. This year, taxpayers, who have long-term capital gains from the sale of listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds, can use ITR-1 to file their tax returns. However, ITR-1 forms cannot be filed in cases of taxpayers who have capital gains from the sale of house property or short-term capital gains from listed equity and equity mutual funds.
The notification also stipulates that in cases where income tax assesses have opted out of the new income tax regime in AY 2024–25, they must declare and opt to either continue or reverse the selection. Those who have opted out of the new income tax regime for the first time in AY 2025–26 must furnish Form 10-IEA acknowledgement details. Additionally, there must also be a clarification for the late filing of Form 10-IEA.

Describing the latest version of the missile, sources from Russia said, 'The Russian Shtil-1 shipborne, medium-range, multi-channel, vertical-launch Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system uses a fundamentally new 9M317ME missile, the latest digital technology and software.' Shtil is a 3-stage launch vehicle that uses liquid propellant. It is the first launch vehicle to successfully launch a payload into orbit from a submarine. The SAM system offers improved performance in comparison with the Shtil-1 variant with an inclined launch of missiles. 'The system provides omnidirectional collective defence of ship squadrons and convoys as well as omnidirectional individual defence of the ship carrying the system against attacks by enemy anti-ship missiles, aircraft, helicopters, boats and ships,' the sources said. What makes the missile system a robust weapon is the 'interval between missiles' launches is 2-3 seconds.' Trials of the Shtil-1 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system with 9M317ME SAMs fitted aboard the (Project 11356) frigate Tamal have been successfully completed at a Baltic Sea range before the frigate's delivery. They involved the participation of its developers from the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation. INS Tamal is the eighth ship that Rosoboronexport transferred to the Indian Navy. Sources term the transfer of the Russian-manufactured frigates to the Indian Navy as being 'in line with the main vector of Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation, which is evolving, firstly, on the basis of long-term contracts, and secondly, with an emphasis on localising the production of Russian equipment and weapons at Indian enterprises in accordance with the Make in India initiative.' PM Modi says cabinet decision to widen National Highway section in Tamil Nadu will boost tourism, economic growth
New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the decision of the Union cabinet to approve the construction of the four-lane Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram Section (46.7 km) in Tamil Nadu. 'Great news for Tamil Nadu's progress! Construction of the 4-Lane Paramakudi - Ramanathapuram Section has been approved by the Union Cabinet. This will ease traffic congestion, boost economic growth and tourism,' PM Modi posted on X. The project will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total capital cost of Rs.1,853 crore. Currently, connectivity between Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkodi is dependent on the existing two-lane National Highway 87 (NH-87) and associated State Highways, which experience significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor. To address these challenges, the project will upgrade approximately 46.7 km of NH-87 from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram to a four-lane configuration. This will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal and Ramanathapuram, an official release said. The project alignment integrates with five major National Highways (NH-38, NH-85, NH-36, NH-536, and NH-32) and three State Highways (SH-47, SH-29, SH-34), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across southern Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with two major Railway Stations (Madurai and Rameshwaram), one Airport (Madurai), and two minor ports (Pamban and Rameshwaram), thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. Upon completion, the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centers, boosting tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development, the release said.
