Justin Callahan first to clinch spot in Governor's Cup semifinals
Callahan remained undefeated through 17 flights of the 22-race double round robin as press deadline approached on Friday, the American skipper and his crew of Oliver Lloyd and Harrison Strom clinching a spot in the semifinals of the prestigious regatta, which is hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach.
New Zealand's Josh Hyde, who emerged from the first round robin in second place with a record of 9-2, won his first six flights in the second round robin to pace the chase pack.
Australia's Cole Tapper, who presided over a backdoor sweep to win the regatta last year, was tied with Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Morgan Pinckney for third place at the midway point. Both sported 5-1 starts to the second round robin, maintaining a three-race lead over Sweden's Theo Westerlind for the last two berths in the semifinals.
Those competing in the Governor's Cup may not reach their 23rd birthday before the end of the event. When Tapper engineered his dramatic comeback a year ago, he prevented Balboa Yacht Club's Jeffrey Petersen from becoming the first three-time winner of the regatta. Petersen has aged out.

Teraji knocked Sandoval down in the fifth round with a precise one-two, and the now-former champion finished the contest strong as well, rocking Sandoval in the final minute of the 12th round, but ultimately it wasn't enough for him to keep his titles. Teraji, who is renowned for his jab, was open to single right hands from Sandoval throughout the contest. Sandoval traded with the highly rated Teraji on the inside and often got the better of the action, landing with the cleaner, more impactful blows. The contest had many ebbs and flows, with both men struggling to gain control for sustained periods. The first four rounds appeared to be nip-and-tuck, but after flooring Sandoval in the fifth, Teraji seemed to be building momentum in the sixth and seventh rounds. Just when it looked like the defending champion had the upper hand, Sandoval increased his work rate and put together a strong showing over the next spell of rounds. Sandoval could now chase unification bouts with WBO champion Anthony Olascagua and IBF titlist Masamichi Yabuki. The status of Sandoval's WBC mandatory is currently unknown. The interim champion, Galal Yafai, was recently reinstated as interim champion after his upset loss to Francisco Rodriguez Jr. was declared a no-contest following Rodriguez Jr.'s failed drug test. In the night's co-feature, Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) retained his WBA bantamweight title after a final-round knockdown earned him a unanimous draw with Daigo Higa (21-3-3, 19 KOs). Higa also scored a knockdown in the bout, flooring Vargas in the fourth round. NFL bans teams from supplying smelling salts to players on game days
The NFL informed teams Tuesday that they are prohibited from supplying ammonia capsules or any form of smelling salts to players on game days. However, the ban does not prohibit players from using the substances. Such a prohibition would have to be negotiated with the NFL Players Association. The NFLPA declined to comment.
