Acquiring multidisciplinary skills for expanding career opportunities is important, say experts

Experts on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) emphasised the importance of acquiring multidisciplinary skills for expanding career opportunities and world views, building character, and fostering empathy and intellectual humility.
They were speaking at a webinar on 'Beyond Boundaries: How Multidisciplinary Learning Prepares for a Complex World', organised jointly by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology and The Hindu.
Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor at SRM Institute of Technology, said the National Education Policy has provided the biggest fillip to multidisciplinary education in India. 'While multidisciplinary education is still in the developmental stage and not fully evolved, every institution is coming up with its own method of providing multidisciplinary courses,' he said. Such education also expands employment opportunities, as companies look for interns and workers with different kinds of problem-solving skills and abilities, he added.
Aruna Sankaranarayanan, Visiting Faculty at the School of Education, Azim Premji University, said disciplinary boundaries are artificial. Stating that there are commonalities between disciplines that seem disparate on the surface, she gave the example of mathematics and art. 'Both deal with shapes, sizes, symmetry and proportion,' she said. She spoke of how people with multi-disciplinary skill sets have succeeded in their careers.
'Venki Ramakrishnan did a Ph.D. in physics, moved to biology, and finally won a Nobel Prize in chemistry. Similarly, Steve Jobs pursued a course in calligraphy, which later helped him design the logo of the Macintosh interface,' she said.
On whether online learning and distance education can help students pick up multidisciplinary courses, Ms. Sankaranarayanan said that while online courses are useful, not many institutions may be offering multi-disciplinary courses online. Mr. Kumar agreed that online education has limited programmes. He said that distance programmes exist but may not be guided.

The Delhi government will transform 18,996 classrooms in its schools into smart classrooms, with facilities such as interactive panels and audiovisual aids, for Classes 9 to 12 in a phased manner, Education Minister Ashish Sood said on Tuesday. Briefing the media following a Cabinet meeting in which a budget of ₹900 crore was approved for the project, the Minister said that the additional classrooms will bring the total number of smart classrooms in the city to 21,412 by 2029-30. 'The plan to create additional smart classrooms is part of a comprehensive digital classroom expansion plan. The project is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,' said Mr. Sood. He added that in the initial phases, 2,446 smart blackboards will be installed in 75 CM Shri Schools for which tenders have already been floated. The education sector had received the highest allocation of ₹19,291 crore or 19.29% of the ₹1-lakh-crore budget announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in March. Mr. Sood also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party, saying it converted only 799 government school classrooms into smart classrooms in its 10-year tenure.

Nagpur University Launches New-Age UG Programmes In Drone Tech, Cyber Science

Nagpur: Aligning higher education with emerging technologies and the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Nagpur University (NU) launched two innovative undergraduate degree programmes from the academic year 2025–26: BSc in Drone Technology and BSc in Cyber Science. The courses include apprenticeship-embedded training and hands-on project work, with strong industry linkage for internships and placements. The curriculum was co-developed with VDIA Engineering Design Innovation Centre and supported by sectoral experts. Emphasis is on interdisciplinary learning with foundational training in Physics, Mathematics, and IT. BSc Drone Technology introduces students to drone systems, aerial robotics, GIS applications, remote sensing, and regulatory frameworks. It prepares graduates for careers in agriculture tech, defence, logistics, and surveillance. BSc Cyber Science focuses on cybersecurity, ethical hacking, digital forensics, and cyber law. This programme equips students with the skills needed to combat cyber threats in the digital era. Class XII pass students with science/mathematics are eligible for merit-based admission. The admission starts on July 9, and students can visit the admission centre at the Department of Mathematics on the campus. "The launch of these futuristic programmes reflects NU's commitment to innovation, skill development, and employability in the digital age," said Madavi Khode Chavare, acting Vice-Chancellor. Smita Acharya, Director, IQAC, added, "These courses are structured to offer students experiential learning and industry exposure from the first year itself, making them job-ready and globally competitive." Chavare (IAS), Pro-Vice Chancellor Subhash Kondawar, Vedik Director Bhavana Deshpande, DND Managing Director Dushyant Deshpande, IQAC Director Acharya, Ganesh Kedar, and Bhushan Mahajan were present during the signing of the MoU.

Experts from premier technical institutions—Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT)-Allahabad—will mentor teachers and guide students under a new initiative launched by the Union ministry of education. The move aims to enhance the quality of education in government-run primary schools across Uttar Pradesh. The initiative aims to inspire students to take greater interest in science, mathematics, and technology (HT File Photo) The initiative is designed not only to provide technical and academic support to government primary school teachers but also to inspire students to take greater interest in science, mathematics, and technology. The programme, approved in the supplementary Project Approval Board (PAB) meeting for the academic session 2025–26, held on May 28, but whose revised minutes were confirmed and made public only on July 3, is part of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and aims to bridge the gap between technical expertise and grassroots education, said officials of the state basic education department. A budget of approximately ₹49 lakh has been sanctioned for its implementation, they added. Experts from IIT Kanpur and MNNIT will work closely with teachers and students in 44,499 basic education schools across the state, offering mentorship to foster learning, growth, and overall academic success, read the PAB meeting minutes, a copy of which is with HT. This effort is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises inclusive, innovative, and quality-driven education. In line with these goals, regular training programmes will be organised for teachers, while students will benefit from workshops focused on science and technology. The programme also aims to promote project-based learning and improve the effective use of digital tools in classrooms, officials said. Additionally, IIT Kanpur's Online Rural Education Initiative (OREI) has also received approval. Under this scheme, student volunteers from the institute are reaching out to remote rural schools, teaching science and mathematics, and making quality education more accessible. Last year, the ministry had also recommended a five-day educational tour for 150 selected students from across Uttar Pradesh (two from each district) to visit premier scientific institutions such as ISRO, Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, various IITs, science parks, and museums—further reinforcing the government's push toward experiential learning and scientific curiosity.
