ITB China, UN Tourism, Fliggy to promote rural tourism
The event will take place from May 27 to 29 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.
The initiative aims to create an international platform to showcase rural tourism in China and build a dynamic bridge between Chinese rural destinations and global travel buyers.
Rural tourism plays a vital role in driving sustainable economic growth and strengthening local communities. ITB China 2025 will focus on initiatives designed to support rural areas through tourism, including the UN Tourism "Best Tourism Villages" initiative, which promotes exemplary rural destinations from across the globe and China. Representatives from previously awarded villages will be invited to share their stories and demonstrate how they have successfully balanced community empowerment, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable economic development.
Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General, UN Tourism said, 'Rural tourism is a vital driver for community empowerment and nature conservation worldwide. Through the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative, we recognise and support destinations that harness rural tourism as a force for good. These villages stand as global examples of how tourism can preserve cultural heritage, safeguard biodiversity, and enhance the quality of life for residents. We are proud to share this vision at ITB China and partner with them to showcase how rural tourism is shaping a more sustainable, inclusive future for rural communities around the world.'
A dedicated forum titled "China Travel: Discovering Rural Beauty" will be hosted by UN Tourism, Alibaba Philanthropy, and Fliggy, offering high-level insights into the development of rural tourism in China. The forum will also feature discussions on the transformative role of tourism in rural development and panel discussions on revitalising rural tourism resources, driving digital transformation, and enhancing product marketing from a global perspective.
The inbound tourism segment will be more diverse and wide-ranging than ever, with participation from Beijing, Hubei, Guangxi, Lahsa, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. Exhibitors include top travel operators such as China Tourism Group Travel Services, Hubei Best Tour, Guangxi Tourism Development Group, China International Travel Service Guilin , Spring Tour, Zhejiang EVERBRIGHT, and Guangdong China Travel Service, as well as key state-owned enterprises like Huangshan Tourism Group. Major hospitality brands will present China's evolving standards in international hospitality.
The China Inbound Travel Forum will provide a global perspective on the Chinese travel market, focusing on fresh strategies for promoting Chinese destinations to overseas audiences. High-profile networking events will be planned to foster collaboration and celebrate local culture. -TradeArabia News Service

Huawei reclaims top spot in China's phone market: data
Tech giant Huawei topped China's smartphone market for the first time in over four years, outflanking US tech giant Apple as well as local competitors including Xiaomi, according to the US-based International Data Corporation. The Shenzhen device maker captured 18.1 percent of the local phone market in the second quarter of this year, shipping 12.5 million units, an IDC report published on Tuesday showed. Huawei's domestic rebound comes after the company has faced a smattering of US export controls, Western bans and a graft probe in Belgium. China's overall smartphone market shrank after six quarters of growth, according to the IDC data, with shipments totalling 69 million units, down four percent on-year. 'Despite the recent US-China trade truce, the broader economic environment presents ongoing challenges, with consumer confidence remaining subdued,' Arthur Guo, a senior research analyst at IDC, said in the report. 'This suggests that a significant uplift in smartphone demand is unlikely in the immediate term, and the market will navigate a more complex landscape in the second half of the year.'

Markets shrug off Trump tariff threat against EU
China's exports rose more than expected in June, official data showed yesterday, after Washington and Beijing agreed a tentative deal to lower swingeing tariffs on each other. Data from the General Administration of Customs said exports climbed 5.8% year-onyear, topping the five percent forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Imports rose 1.1%, higher the 0.3% gain predicted and marking the first growth this year. China's exports reached record highs in 2024 -- a lifeline to its slowing economy as pressures elsewhere mounted. Beijing's efforts to sustain growth have been hit by a bruising trade war with the United States, driven by President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, though the two de-escalated their spat with a framework for a deal at talks in London last month. Monday's customs figures showed Chinese exports to the United States surged 32.4% in June, having fallen the month before, according to an AFP calculation based on official data. "Growth in export values rebounded somewhat last month, helped by the US-China trade truce," Zichun Huang, China economist at Capital Economics, said. "But tariffs are likely to remain high and Chinese manufacturers face growing constraints on their ability to rapidly expand global market share by slashing prices," Huang said. "We therefore expect export growth to slow over the coming quarters, weighing on economic growth," she added. Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, said the figures showed Chinese firms were still "frontloading" exports to the United States -- accelerating shipments in anticipation of further tariffs to come.

Bahrain Secures British Investment
Carbon-linked deal drives momentum • USD 250m in three years • New £2bn sustainability pact • Growth in trade, logistics, tech Bahrain has quietly become one of the UK's fastest-growing economic gateways in the Gulf, securing over USD 250 million in British investment over the past three years, with a bold £2 billion private-sector deal now steering focus toward green growth and industrial reinvention. The announcement came during a high-level visit to the United Kingdom by a Bahraini delegation led by H.E. Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). The delegation met with British businesses and investors, showcasing opportunities in Bahrain's evolving financial, ICT, tourism, and education sectors. Strategic Expansion Ties between the two kingdoms have intensified in recent years, with the Strategic Investment and Collaboration Partnership (SIP2) signed in June marking a major step forward. The agreement commits over £2 billion from the Bahraini private sector into projects linked to carbon reduction and sustainability. It follows the UK's inclusion in the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA), which aligns the two countries on economic integration and technology partnerships. 'Bahrain remains a trusted gateway for UK companies seeking growth in the Middle East, backed by a business-friendly environment, agile regulation, and high-growth sectors,' said H.E. Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif. 'The increased confidence from UK investors is a testament to our enduring partnership, and we look forward to building on this momentum.' Future-Focused Sectors The EDB's visit also features two panel discussions in collaboration with the Financial Times under the theme 'Shaping the Next Generation of Manufacturing and Logistics Hubs'. The sessions will explore how supply chain shifts, sustainability mandates, and technology trends are influencing decisions about where global companies site their facilities. UK-based firms such as Standard Chartered, HSBC, Deloitte, Reckitt Benckiser, and the University of Strathclyde already have a presence in Bahrain. Their footprint reflects the Kingdom's appeal as a base for expansion across the Gulf. Non-oil trade between Bahrain and the UK rose by 45 percent in 2024, reaching USD 645 million from USD 443 million the year before. The growth adds further weight to Bahrain's positioning as a regional node for innovation-driven, low-carbon, and service-based industries.
