CJI attributes his rise to Ambedkar, Constitution
Chief Justice of India
Bhushan Gavai on Saturday credited his rise from a semi-slum school in Maharashtra's Amravati to the country's highest judicial office, the transformative legacy of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the Constitution.
"If there was no Dr Ambedkar and no Constitution, I would not be in Chief Justice's chair," he said at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College diamond jubilee celebrations in Deekshabhoomi. He said his visit to Deekshabhoomi was not as a guest but as "a son of the soil".
Standing alongside CM Devendra Fadnavis, senior judges Shree Chandrashekhar, Nitin Sambre, Anil Kilor, Anil Pansare, Prafulla Khubalkar, Abhay Mantri, the CJI said: "This is not a ceremonial visit.
It's deeply personal. I have a lifelong emotional connect with this place."
Praising Ambedkar's choice of Buddhism over other religions, Gavai said, "Despite offers to embrace Islam and Christianity, Babasaheb chose Buddhism because it ensures equality for all." He cited the 1981 silver jubilee of the Buddhist movement when ex-governor and his late father R S Gavai brought Dr Ambedkar's ashes to Nagpur. "I remember the massive procession.

My father carried the ashes on his head. It was a defining moment," hesaid.
The CJI also reflected on the Ambedkar college's early struggles when staff salaries were unpaid, and operations ran out of a temporary structure. "My father and Dadasaheb Kumbhare sought help from Manoharbhai Patel in Gondia, who agreed to support on the condition they'd have meals with him at his home one day," he said, praising such sacrifices that built the institution "brick by brick".
He lauded the college's evolution into a NAAC-accredited institution. Highlighting women's empowerment as a true tribute to Dr Ambedkar's vision, Gavai noted that 80% of today's achievers here are girls. "Ambedkar always said the progress of a society is reflected by the progress of its women," he added.

Manipur to bolster policing with new Secretariat Police Stn
Imphal: In a bid to bolster effective policing, Manipur govt has approved the establishment of a new Secretariat Police Station at Mantripukhri and creation of 12 new sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) posts in both new and existing districts. According to a press communique issued here on Sunday night, the decision came after a proposal by Manipur Police Department, to enhance a strategic approach to improving security infrastructure amid growing administrative and operational demands especially with the imminent relocation of the state civil secretariat and police headquarters to Mantripukhri. The upcoming secretariat police station will cater not only to the secretariat and police headquarters, but also to several high-value institutions in the area, including the Manipur High Court, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and the Forest Office Complex. "The establishment of this police station is aimed at providing comprehensive law enforcement coverage in the new capital complex," a senior police officer said. A new SDPO (New Capital Complex) post has been approved under Imphal East district to oversee both the proposed Secretariat Police Station and the existing Heingang Police Station, thereby ensuring seamless command, improved coordination and faster response mechanisms to law-and-order situations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The creation of 11 additional SDPO posts across Manipur targets longstanding structural gaps in police supervision, particularly in newly created districts where only one SDPO post was previously sanctioned. The expansion comes as a timely response to mounting administrative challenges, insufficient crime investigation oversight, and increasing security demands in border and hill districts. Each SDPO post has been strategically mapped to key subdivisions to ensure tighter supervision, more accessible policing, and better public service delivery in both remote and sensitive regions.

Tamil Nadu elections: Can Vijay be the next MGR?
TVK believes AIADMK, having lost 10 elections since 2017, cannot defeat DMK, and hence the battle is between DMK and Vijay's TVK A huge poster of actor Vijay stares down from the wall. A digital signboard flashes: 285 days, 3 hours, 43 minutes and 46 seconds, a countdown to the 2026 assembly election in Tamil Nadu . Scores of people sit glued to screens, fingers flying over keyboards, some others are on mobile phones trying to reach voters in remote hamlets. The Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) war room in Chennai is fully activated. Membership drives, training programmes for booth agents, surveys and strengthening of its IT wing mark the priorities of TVK. Insiders say surveys show TVK is racing ahead of AIA DMK and closing in on DMK. While comparisons are unfair, Vijay has set his party the ambitious goal of repeating the MGR phenomenon: winning the assembly election on its own on its debut (the matinee idol-led-AIADMK won 144 of the 200 seats it contested in 1977). He and party general secretary N Anand oversee the strategies. 'We have appointed 69,400 booth agents and their four-member teams and assigned them to every election booth in the 234 assembly constituencies,' says Aaadhav. One assembly constituency has around 275 booths with a booth assigned for about 250 families. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Two election managers handle the war room and campaign strategy, besides analysing voter mood, and tracking issues and opponents' activities. 'It is a 24x7 job. There is no time for anything else,' says one of the two managers who don't want to be named. 'Booth agents go to every house taking the message of the party and the leader to people and listen to their problems,' he says. They project Vijay as 'Makkal virumbum mudhalvar vetpalar' (The CM candidate people yearn for). 'We've completed training sessions for 120 party district secretaries,' says Aadhav. TVK recently launched the app 'MY TVK', for digital enrolment of members; it claims to have added 2.5 crore members. 'Our leader can directly access the 2.9 lakh office bearers,' he says. 'MGR started his party not based on alliance, but on his party cadre and people. People wanted change. It is a similar scenario now. TVK's will be an honest govt, equality-based administration with women empowerment and support for minorities,' says Aadhav. The party is gearing up for the Aug 25 'Madurai Maanadu'. 'After that, the leader outreach programme will begin. Before Dec, there will be a dramatic change in TN politics,' says Aadhav, alleging corruption under M K Stalin's regime. Having spurned advances from AIADMK and BJP, TVK is critical of both. 'After J Jayalalithaa's death, AIADMK surrendered to Narendra Modi for self-interest. Cadres, supporters and people are upset. Their only hope is Vijay, who is against family and corruption,' says Aadhav. Vijay's political strategist Jhon Arokiasamy calls TVK the largest party in the state. 'The party will either contest all the seats on its own or, after the conference and TN tour, consider alliances,' he says. Arokiasamy says TVK is not interested in AIADMK or BJP. 'When you oppose divisive politics and corruption, you have to be against DMK and AIADMK. And BJP is an ideological rival,' he says. TVK believes AIADMK, having lost 10 elections since 2017, cannot defeat DMK, and hence the battle is between DMK and TVK. 'Palaniswami is not a universally accepted leader within and outside the party. And TVK is the new force,' says Arokiasamy. During earlier interactions with AIDMK, the actor had demanded that he be projected as the CM face, and his party would contest half the seats. Party general secretary Anand says Vijay will take the final decision on alliance. 'Whatever be his decision, we will win the election, and he will be CM. Whoever accepts him as the CM candidate will be accepted in our alliance,' he says.

IPFT to celebrate Tipraland Demand Day on Aug 23
Agartala: Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP in the state govt, has declared Aug 23 as Tipraland Demand Day, reaffirming its push for the elevation of the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) to a separate state with full autonomy. IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma emphasised that the demand for Tipraland is central to the party's ideology, which has been advocating for over 25 years for empowerment, direct central funding, and ADC autonomy. Despite its alliance with BJP, IPFT maintains its right to pursue independent political objectives, as outlined in their common minimum program, he said. Debbarma announced plans for a massive rally in the city to advocate for Tipraland under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. The rally will culminate in the submission of a formal memorandum to the governor, urging intervention to address the issue.
