Cheers star George Wendt dies aged 76

Glasgow Times20-05-2025
Wendt's family said he died early on Tuesday morning, peacefully in his sleep while at home, according to the publicity firm The Agency Group.
'George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,' the family said in a statement. 'He will be missed forever.' The family requested privacy.
Despite a long career of roles onstage and on TV, it was as gentle and henpecked Norm Peterson on Cheers that he was most associated, earning six straight Emmy Award nominations for best supporting actor in a comedy series from 1984-89.

The series was centred on lovable losers in a Boston bar and starred Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, John Ratzenberger, Kirstie Alley and Woody Harrelson. It would spin off another megahit in Frasier and was nominated for an astounding 117 Emmy Awards, winning 28 of them.
Wendt, who spent six years in Chicago's renowned Second City improv troupe before sitting on a barstool at the place where everybody knows your name, did not have high hopes when he auditioned for Cheers.
'My agent said, 'It's a small role, honey. It's one line. Actually, it's one word'. The word was 'beer'. I was having a hard time believing I was right for the role of 'the guy who looked like he wanted a beer'.
'So I went in, and they said, 'it's too small a role. Why don't you read this other one?' And it was a guy who never left the bar,' Wendt told GQ.
After Cheers, Wendt starred in his own short-lived sitcom, The George Wendt Show, and had guest spots on TV shows including The Ghost Whisperer, Harry's Law and Portlandia.
In 2023, he competed on The Masked Singer.
He was part of a brotherhood of Chicago Everymen who gathered over sausage and beers and adored 'Da Bears' on Saturday Night Live.
He found steady work onstage: Wendt slipped on Edna Turnblad's housecoat in Broadway's Hairspray beginning in 2007, and was in the Tony Award-winning play Art in New York and London.
He starred in the national tour of 12 Angry Men and appeared in a production of David Mamet's Lakeboat. He also starred in regional productions of Death of a Salesman, The Odd Couple, Never Too Late and Funnyman.
'A, it's by far the most fun, but B, I seem to have been kicked out of television,' Wendt told the Kansas City Star in 2011. 'I overstayed my welcome. But theatre suits me.'
Wendt had an affinity for playing Santa Claus, donning the famous red outfit in the stage musical Elf on Broadway in 2017, the TV movie Santa Baby with Jenny McCarthy in 2006 and in the doggie Disney video Santa Buddies in 2009.
He also played Father Christmas for TV specials by Larry the Cable Guy and Stephen Colbert.
'I think it just proves that if you stay fat enough and get old enough, the offers start rolling in,' the actor joked to the Associated Press in his Broadway dressing room.

Born in Chicago, Wendt attended Campion High School, a Catholic boarding school in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and then Notre Dame, where he rarely went to class and was asked to leave.
He transferred to Rockhurst University in Kansas City and graduated, after majoring in economics.
He found a home at Second City in both the touring company and the mainstage.
'I think comedy is my long suit, for sure. My approach to comedy is usually not full-bore clownish,' he told the AP.
'If you're trying to showboat or step outside, it doesn't always work. There are certain performers who almost specialise in doing that, and they do it really well. But that's not my approach.'
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, who voiced Norm's never-seen not-so better half, Vera, on Cheers, his children, Hilary, Joe and Daniel and his stepchildren, Joshua and Andrew.
'From his early days with The Second City to his iconic role as Norm on Cheers, George Wendt's work showcased how comedy can create indelible characters that feel like family. Over the course of 11 seasons, he brought warmth and humour to one of television's most beloved roles,' National Comedy Centre executive director Journey Gunderson said in a statement.

Prince Harry needs people to forget he made fortune out of slamming his family… but Angola trip didn't work, expert says

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AFTER a secret peace summit was held between Prince Harry and King Charles' aides, royal fans hoped their icy relationship would thaw. But it appears there will be no reconciliation between the father and son, which will leave Prince Harry in an awkward spot. It comes after The Sun's Royal show asked viewers if they wanted to see the two reconcile, and a staggering 73% said no. Robert said: "I think it's too late. Too much has gone under the bridge, in my opinion. Too much water." Sky News royal editor Rhiannon Mills agreed, saying Harry had thrown his family 'under the bus.' She added: "The biggest issue for Harry and Meghan, is that an awful lot has been said. "The whole family kind of went under the bus, really, in the documentaries and in Spare. And there are lots of things that they cannot erase in terms of what's been said." Robert also revealed that the Duke of Sussex's recent trip to Angola, where Princess Diana went, also did nothing to sway the public on letting him back into the royal family. Prince Harry recently followed in his mum's footsteps walking through minefields in Angola and speaking to the charity Halo, who help clear them, something he also did in 2019. The royal expert said: "But the reality was that was a big deal then. "It wasn't a big deal this time around. So he's not got the same draw that he had. He must know that. When you've trashed your family and monetised it." Meghan & Harry's war with the royals will NEVER end - they'll drag it on as long as they have breath in his body 5 Monetising over the family feud will be hard to come back from Credit: AP Robert went on to say that Diana's authorised biography, Her True Story, was different as she didn't monetise from it, while Harry did with his book Spare. "She didn't monetise it for herself. He made a fortune out of it," he explained. "He's asking for forgiveness. Well, you know, I think that his father probably will in the long term. I think he probably will. I just don't see William and Camilla doing it." Earlier this month, Meredith Maines, Meghan and Harry's chief of staff in California, and Liam Maguire, the head of their UK PR operation, recently met Charles's communication secretary Tobyn Andreae at the Royal Over-Seas League which sits just three minutes from Clarence House. The secret peace summit sparked rumours a reconciliation is in the works, but Prince William's team was notably absent. The Duke revealed in his bombshell BBC interview "life is precious" and "I would like to get my father and brother back". It comes after Harry opened up a number of wounds when he spoke to US talk show host Oprah Winfrey alongside his new wife about how Meghan was allegedly treated during her time as part of the family. Meghan claimed she was left suicidal due to how she was treated as Harry said that questions were raised about the colour of their child's skin colour by other royals. The Prince would also publish his bombshell book Spare in 2023 after moving to California which stirred up further controversies. He reportedly hasn't seen Charles in years with his last direct communication with brother William coming in 2022. The feuding brothers reportedly didn't even speak to each other despite standing 'virtually back to back' among mourners at their uncle's memorial service last year. Inside Prince William and Prince Harry's 'feud' TENSIONS have been running high in the royal family since Prince Harry stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California with Meghan Markle. Their last reported interaction was during the funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022, but conversations were said to be brief. The feuding brothers reportedly did not speak to each other despite standing 'virtually back to back' among mourners at their uncle's memorial service last year. Growing up, Wills and Harry shared many of the same friends who were part of their close, tight-knit circle. But their relationship took a sour turn after Harry lobbed vile allegations against the Prince of Wales in his memoir Spare - and they are said to have not been in direct contact since the 2023 release. In the book, he claimed William had physically attacked him and knocked him to the floor in 2019 and made insulting comments about Meghan. The Sussexes had also targeted Princess Kate, when Meghan claimed the royal made her cry. The bitter feud was ignited when the Sussexes told Oprah, in their 2021 sit down interview, that certain members of the Royal Family had speculated about Prince Archie's skin colour. It was later claimed the royals were Princess Kate and King Charles, after Harry and Meghan's former pal Omid Scobie published his hatchet-job book Endgame. During the infamous Oprah interview, the duchess also made stinging comments about the Firm and how they handled her mental health struggles. Prince William and Harry's bond then worsened after the Sussexes made a number of accusations against the Royal Family in their 2022 Netflix docuseries. The duke has given subsequent interviews, such as his most BBC chat in May 2025, that have only propelled bad blood.

Here's what it's like to see Kelly Clarkson's Studio Sessions residency in Las Vegas

One set. Two outfits. And a whole lot of soul. Albeit a week later than originally planned, Kelly Clarkson recently kicked off her Studio Sessions residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace with a stripped down show that focuses more on the charismatic singer's voice than the over-the-top frills Las Vegas residencies are known for. If Clarkson was battling voice issues or illness, there was no evidence of it on opening night. She brilliantly belted out song after song with force and engaged with the audience with stories throughout the over two-hour performance. The Studio Sessions stage replicates a recording studio. It's a simple set that remains in place for the duration of the show. Clarkson says it's inspired by what her 'party barn' in Montana looks like. Framed photos of artists she idolizes are tacked onto the studio walls: Bonnie Raitt, Reba McEntire, Steven Tyler, Lauryn Hill, Janis Joplin and, of course, Dolly Parton (who will perform six shows on the very same stage this December). 'All these people are big musical influences for me,' she told fans on opening night. 'This is literally my shit on these walls. That's my Dolly,' she said, pointing to the photo of Parton hanging on the wall. Clarkson dressed for comfort and arrived 'in studio' wearing bell bottom jeans and a sparkly sequined Stevie Nicks T-shirt, which she sported until her encore. After opening the show with stirring renditions of 'Me' and 'Walk Away,' Clarkson dug deep and sang 'Heat,' a single she said 'feels like a modern day Tina Turner song' before breaking into a Bowie-esque version of 'Dance with Me.' Not surprisingly, Clarkson is a bit of a gabber. The multiple Emmy Award-winning talk show host spoke often to praise her band—a large ensemble with a string and horn section, backup singers and other musicians—as well as to talk about the set (the furniture is available on Wayfair) and how this residency was all about giving fans a glimpse into the fun associated with recording. 'We gave you a sneak peek of what we do. There's nothing like getting into studios with a bunch of musicians and vibing with each other. It's electric,' Clarkson said. 'This is my favorite show I've ever put together, because I love being in the studio and that's where this whole idea came from.' I heard some folks criticize her opening night performance for singing a couple songs with her back turned to the audience seated stage left. It was a detail I didn't initially notice because she was facing me the whole time. She also remained center stage the entire show so those in the front rows didn't get the up-close experience they may have expected. Both are easily correctable, though. Clarkson's only costume change came at the very end of the show when she ditched the jeans and returned in a white gown to perform her final three songs of the evening, which concluded with her hit song 'Since U Been Gone.' 'Damn right I'm going to sing this song in this dress!' she told the audience. When and where is Clarkson performing Studio Sessions? When: July 25, 26; Aug 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16; Nov 7, 8, 14, 15 Where: The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas What's on the Studio Sessions setlist? The setlist for Clarkson's Studio Sessions Vegas residency includes 19 songs that span her career and a few bonuses during the encore. – 'Me' – 'Walk Away' – 'Heat' – 'Dance With Me' – 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' – 'Heartbeat Song' – 'Breakaway' – 'Didn't I' – 'Because of You' – 'Mine' – 'Catch My Breath' – 'Beautiful Disaster' – 'Piece by Piece' – 'Miss Independent' – 'Sober' – 'Favorite Kind of High' – 'My Life Would Suck Without You' – 'Tightrope' – 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' Encore Her encore includes one Kellyoke cover song that will rotate. On the first weekend she sang Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' opening night and on night two, she sang Måneskin's version of Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons' 'Beggin.' – 'Where Have You Been' – Kellyoke cover – 'Since U Been Gone'

Kristy McNichol, 62, was a BIG teen star who worked with Matt Dillon and Tatum O'Neal... see her now

Kristy McNichol was a huge TV and movie star in the 1970s and 1980s. The brunette with the big grin was best known for playing the tough daughter on the hit TV series Family. The role landed her magazine covers and a massive following. McNichol also played Leticia 'Buddy' Lawrence on Family, Patricia Apple on Apple's Way, and Barbara Weston on Empty Nest. She also appeared in the 1978 NBC movie Summer of My German Soldier and the 1980 cult classic Little Darlings with Tatum O'Neal. And there were the TV shows like Starsky & Hutch, CHiPs, The Bionic Woman and The Love Boat. She retired from her TV career in 2001 to teach acting at a private school in Los Angeles and has since devoted much of her time to charity work The star was spotted in Los Angeles this week during a power walk. She was dressed for comfort in a white T-shirt, black shorts, a maroon jacket and sneakers with cropped short hair. The actress has kept a low profile since she left Hollywood in the 90s - foregoing social media and only showing up to some press events. Like many child stars, she wasn't the only sibling trying to make it big. McNichol's brother Jimmy started out alongside her in commercials before the two parted ways to go on solo gigs. It would take only a few years for her to land one of her biggest roles as Letitia 'Buddy' Lawrence in the TV drama Family which ran for four years from 1976 to 1980. McNichols would win two Emmy Awards and was only 14 years old when the show began, but her cheeky tomboy persona endeared her to fans and set her on a trajectory of success for the next two decades. She would also dip her toes into the music industry alongside her brother through the musical numbers that would feature on TV specials. This would segue into the pair recording an album Kristy and Jimmy McNichol for RCA Records. As her popularity grew, she developed a cult following for ABC's Battle of the Network Stars which was a celebrity sports show she typically dominated in. Her face became heavily associated with the network and her work on the TV movie Summer of My German Soldier was critically acclaimed. But it would be her leading role in the 1980 coming-of-age film Little Darlings alongside Tatum O'Neil that would make her a heartthrob for teenagers - the premise being two girls with opposite and clashing personalities bunking together at summer camp and making a bet to see who can lose their virginity first. At this point, McNichols was on a high, starring alongside Dennis Quaid and Mark Hamill in The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia (1980) and Only When I Laugh (1981) which got her nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Unfortunately, 1982 would be the year she began to question her career path. The former actress told People Magazine that on her way to the set of Just the Way You Are, she felt she was 'on the brink of a total emotional collapse'. She had dealt with years of success, eight movies by that time, creepy advances by directors and unresolved questions about herself. Throughout the filming of that film, she said she mustered the energy to pull through the scene since that's what she knew all her life and then turned into a 'sad little lost animal in the darkness'. Her weight dropped, depression skyrocketed and was constantly haunted by strange dreams. And when she finally refused to continue filming the movie, even though she returned on set a year later, the rumors of her mental state flew throughout the tabloids. The culprit? The intense pressures of child stardom. McNichol returned to TV a few more times, making appearances in Women of Valor (1986), You Can't Hurry Love (1988) and Two Moon Junction (1988). Her final big role was in 1988 as Barbara Weston in Empty Nest, a spin-off of the Golden Girls, but she left the show four years later after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In 2001, she announced she had retired from acting and retreated to her Sherman Oaks home. But she would come back into the public eye to reveal her biggest secret that had been the cause of speculation for years: her sexuality. McNichols came out as a lesbian in 2012 and revealed that she had lived with her girlfriend, Martie Allen, for over 20 years. It took decades to bring forth publicly, but McNichol said she hoped it may stop some children from becoming victims of homophobic bullying. The former actress also said when she came out that another reason for discussing her sexuality now was because she is 'approaching 50' and wants to 'be open about who I am.'
